    What other vehicles do Avali have besides spaceships?

    Might not be the most effective, though. Arrows are light, yes. But made of aerogel, and they'd be even lighter. Unless an Avali bow would have enough force behind it's draw weight, the arrow wouldn't have enough force to penetrate... Usually. On Avalon, as Ryuu has said, the creatures Avali hunt have thick shells.

    Against soft-skinned creatures, and other humanoids? If Avali DID adopt using bows as stealth and assassination weapons, they'd be terribly effective.

    But it's also that Avali might not see bows as useful for that purpose, or may not care so much. They have a different way of thinking, and just might not care or think that what they have already in comparison to bows is enough.

    But that's speculation, and the Word of RyuujinZERO is absolute. I'm just curious to see what an aerogel bow would look like.

    Well.. You're right.. But, I just wanna say this xD;
    Guns will make your position discovered, and especially the firelance x); The railgun-like beam will definitely show your position.
    But yea.. Thats my take/opinion..
    I asked, Got said 'no' its fine~

    I like a good Gun. but I love a Good Bow.
    yes, a Gun is clearly better, but you can not deny the usefulness of a Bow in just about any scenario.

    the Avali are super clever. being able to take down massive prey compared to themselves. and from what I gathered. they are Tacticians, relying on brains and mobility over Muscle and force. a Pack of 4 could, if given the right equipment, could wipe out a military force of 40 or more. and a Bow is far too valuable for ranged Stealth to not have one.
    sharp hearing, agile, and clever. this makes them Ideal hunters, and it is not much different if used in warfare.

    I know quite a fair deal on weaponry, and every weapon, no matter how primitive it is, is useful no matter the Era

    Same.. I was just curious of how cool looking an avali bow would be/look like. Like you said though, Ryuu's words are finalX3;

    I see the point. but who said anything about the whole Bow and arrow being made of Aerogel. the bow would be like the handles of the weapons. and the Arrow itself, only the tip is Aerogel, the shaft would be made of a heavier metal to add that needed punch

    I think they have hovercraft for civilian purposes, not sure on what else...

    Yep, around here you can look up a guy selling one on the internet, call them, and a few hours later just buy it off them in person with cash, not exactly legally but still easy as heck. This is even true with assault weapons.

    I also think people are conflating hunting with warfare.

    Avali hunting developed around bring down huge, naturally armoured creatures. Arrows would just piss off a creature that sort've size. You're looking at precise, carefully executed teamwork and special tactics for driving heavy lances deep inside the creature (Again a reason why throwing spears more akin to pilum make more sense than throwing knives, javelins or... lol... needles). These days, they have railguns for hunting such animals (Thats not to say it's not a point of pride amongst some to know how to use traditional tactics)

    Now, off-world, prey are smaller, and bows become effective; BUT, bow-hunting was never a tradition, while modern hunters have access to guns. Therefore there is unlikely to be much in the way of avali-specific bow technology. In the same way as a desert-dwelling race probably doesn't have it's own distinct style of boat-building. Now if you guys want to create avali bows as an add-on by all means, but as superfluous tech, they won't be supported in the foreseeable future as core mod material.

    Warfare on the other hand, puts orbittal bombardment, indirect fire smart weapons, gun drones, optic camoflage, air support etc at their disposal. The idea of even wasting space on a dropship for a bow and arrow is laughable. Also the "silent" arguement for a bow an arrow is kind've moot. An arrow is rather like stabbing someone at range, ask any prison guard or trauma surgeon how lethal stabbing is (Hint: Not very, your victim is definitly going to scream and shout)

    True about them just getting angrier if you shoot it and the arrow bounces off xD
    Though it was just an idea for probably my favorite weapon for this amazing race but you made very valid points xD I just didn't read so much about the avali's Otherwise I probably wouldn't have asked that.

    Except that in real life, railguns don't HAVE beams. A railgun essentially fires an EXTREMELY high speed bullet. It's a chunk of metal, and unless that metal is magnesium, you're not leaving any trail behind it.
    In fact, the Starbound 'railgun' is EXTREMELY slow compared to actual railguns, which have been recorded with muzzle velocities of more than 2km/s. Did you blink? A railgun could have smashed through your house a couple times over by the time your eyes opened up again.
    The only 'glow' of a non-burning railgun projectile is from the short-lived plasma cloud that forms behind the projectile due to the high muzzle velocity, but that's localized to the first couple meters from the end of the barrel, and vanishes almost faster than the eye can comprehend what it saw. Railguns are being researched for use on sea vessels, for long-range artillery strikes using kinetic energy alone to deal major damage. Imagine a wrecking ball travelling at ~4000 MPH (~7,000 KPH), coming into contact with just about anything.

    I believe it's the factor of noise. Guns are very noisy, but are Railgun quiet?

    Railguns also have completely ridiculous muzzle flash.

    Guns are only noisy if you're within the range of sound. Take sniper rifles, for example. They are near silent-not because they don't mak a noise when they shoot, oh no, they're fucking loud, but targets usually would be struck by the bullet before the sound would reach them. Unless the sniper is an awful shot, in which case they would hear the shot-if they're close enough for the sound to reach them.
    Same principle with railguns. They're loud, but they travel faster than the sound they make, rendering them effectively silent.
    I think, at least. I'm not an expert on guns or anything, in fact I've never shot one nor owned one, or even lived in the same house as one despite living in America most of my life. All we have is a pair of metal nunchucks.
    ...which is kinda hilarious, and brutal.

    The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s. The muzzle velocity of a railgun can exceed 2000 m/s. Your projectile arrives before the sound of your shot does.

    Incorrect. Railguns use magnetic propulsion, not gas/gunpowder propulsion. There IS no explosion. The only 'flash' is a cloud of plasma that fizzles out of existence quite fast. I suppose in a pitch black environment it would be easily noticeable, but it's still quite a lot dimmer than the explosive flash of a conventional firearm.

    This kinda goes back to the discussion we had (like 300 pages ago) about theoretical space guns that could shoot faster than the speed of light. You don't really have to be silent or stealthy if your projectiles can move faster than the waves used to detect them in the first place.

    I see there are now tier 1 to 10 weaponry, but where's the tier 5+ armor? D:
    I'm getting tired of hiding to gather aegisalt...

    We are talking about ground warfare here though. At the kind of ranges ground combat take place, we're looking at the sound of the shot arriving moments after it is fired. A sniper using a railgun is still going to give away his position the moment he fires; but thats' largely irrelevant anyway, that is exactly how real life guns work and we havn't seen snipers revert back to using bows and arrows or ninja tactics ;)

    Crafting bench, some reason vanilla armour after tier 5 is on the bench
