I dont see the avali making mechs. I can see them in well armed light vehicles. Unless I have the lore about their combat tactics wrong

Well, mechs can be well armed light vehicles. Mechs can be surprisingly maneuverable, you know.

They *do* have small mecha for shock tactics; when subtlety isn't on the cards then your next refuge is in audacity. They're just not the first choice, because obviously a mech presents a large, difficult to hide target and despite the strong armour and heavy firepower, it tends to be risky for your survival.

but not nearly as manueverable as a hoverbike can be.

Their hoverbikes are for scouting/civilian transport. Such a vehicle'd be a terrible idea in a warzone, it presents a very obvious, easy to hit and very very lightly armorued target.

so they have them but only use them if they have to?

and your right about the hoverbike being vulnerable.

Yeah... just think Starwars speeder bikes... flimsy things they are... run into a tree and you explode into a million pieces and a fireball :p Don't care how much armor protection you have on you... you aren't going to survive the kinetic force of being rammed into something and also the blast. Same thing applies if your bike is shot up and it explodes from under you. That concussive blast damages internal organs.

It's like with most explosives... stand quite close but far enough away that you aren't burned from the blast and your internal organs get turned to soup or jelly.

I think there's a need to clear up a bit about field tactics. They're not a war-prone race, they don't typically have to get into pitched battles; period. (That's not to say they arn't natural warriors, but they're not Space-Russia either, going about annexing their neighbours on a regular basis). Therefore most conflicts they need deal with tend to be pirates, terrorists, ornery aliens that sort've thing; where they're dealing with poorly armed, poorly disciplined opponents and bringing mecha and orbittal bombardment to the fight is overkill and puts their operators at more risk than is needed.

When they DO end up in a straight up war. Then their infantry in the field use mobile infantry tactics as discussed for whittling with enemy forces (saying elusive, setting up ambushes, scouting with drones, marking targets for artillery, missiles or orbittal strike, fading when the enemy moves on them), drawing out and ambushing enemies is always preferable to a standing battle.

When a direct assault has to be conducted, ie. against a fortified, permanent structure. Then you see the big guns such as mechs/mobile weapon platforms stuff that can't easily be hidden or withdrawn. Mecha are preferable in that kind've urban combat due to their superior agility (ie. a mech can more easily take cover in an urban setting, than a tank which is a sitting duck to artillery or orbittal fire).

Hover bikes are basically unarmored. A guy sitting on a bike has no protection whatsoever and is hovering high above the ground in plain sight... it's a terrible idea. Even in real life we're using UAV's (drones) these days as aerial spotters instead of risking helicopters; and even then, helicopters are only viable because your average AK-47 can't hit the broadside of a barn. by contrast a rail "rifle" will shred a light helicopter.

    i get what your saying.

here is the math: hoverbike + tree/rock/wall = burning wreck

Thanx for clearing that up. I figured out they arent war-prone myself. but couldn't quite figure out the rest :p

And a very, very dead Avali.

while we are discussing their equipment. When CF implements ship size upgrades how will you work that into the mod? I remember reading something in the mod's wiki that the avali don't use capital ships.

I'm actually looking in to other options for ships; something I saw in the recent outpost preview got me excited and I hope that it's an actual feature they're implementing and not just a proof of concept thing. Basiclly, i noticed in the preview there were "self linking" tiles in the pictures, the pipes and stuff are very complex and would need 8 or 9 individual tile types to achieve normally; now it might just be they're taking the complex route, but I'm hoping they're doing it the intuitive way. If that is the case, then it'll be relatively trivial for me to create a madtulip-like set of objects and tiles to build your own ship using without needing lots of complexity like mad tulips (ie no need for a tile setter)

ah so each ship would just be a custom job by the owner.

Pretty much. At the end of the day, MOST Avali ships don't have a useful amount of 'generic' interior space canonically, they're highly specialised. Many ships (especially military ones) have little more interior space than the early apollo capsules, having little more than an armoured capsule the crew can ride in; and eject in an emergency. So it's not only a lot of work, but hard to rectify with canon. Letting players build their own ships seems like a better solution.

Anyway it's one option. That's very very far down the priority lsit right now.

I am a nub at tents, and this is my first hour or so of playing this mod or even modded starbound at all, aside from a brief poke at Creative a while back.. Variety is the Spice of the Universe threw a painful blizzard at me.

And so I am become Icevali, maker of incomplete dugouts.

I like how the large poles put together look like a palisade of sorts. Nice idea, will take note.

That....was not at all what I intended. I just intended a pole that happened to support the entrance and hold the door because...eh. Reasons. I am not known for being logical with my building choices.

    that is still pretty good.
