Further development is not ongoing at this time. Ryuujin has grown somewhat disillusioned with Starbound, and it seems less and less likely that Chucklefish will do anything he finds interesting enough to be worth coming back. While there may be small changes and additions to the mod as neccessary (if Starbound adds in its overheating mechanic, for instance), we are unlikely to see any bugfixes or further development for some time.

So feel free to report, but don't expect any action to be taken in the near future.

Indeed. It's also bothersome that they're talking about greatly changing up and replacing the __merge functionality for JSON files, which means most of the mods JSON will need to be re-written in the future :/

In meantime, have a railgun courtesy of Planet Explorers engine....

    Wow that really is similar.

Fucking... Halo... AGAIN. I have never played a Halo game how is this... *facedesk*

The butt design I had seen in generic concept art on the web and I liked how that was structured. Seemed like an efficient way of compressing down a butt, the core firing and loading mechanisms, essentially a bullpup. Avali railguns have always used a split rail design so the top and bottom of the barrel are seperate (Though it's not immediatly obvious thanks to Starbound's super low resolution), split rails are probably unrealistic, but they look cool and are fairly industry standard (Tau sniper railguns, Xai-Corp mechs, BF2142 turrets, - apparently halo, and plenty more sport the split rail design)

Finally, inspired somewhat by the tau rifles I opted for a scope/MFD, but realising that it was using cameras and sensors, not optics and an Avali soldier would be using their augmentations typically, I sunk the scope into the frame to make it into more of an MFD than a dedicated scope.

Well it is my highly unprofessional opinion that split railguns are perfectly realistic, just split twin rails are not, a split tri or quad rail can better ensure the the slug doesn't deviate from the intended course, while split twin rails are susceptible to deviation along either the X or Y axis, depending on which the rails aren't positioned along

Will the avail mod at the very least be updated with a new json so all of our characters don't get annihilated :rip:

Actually the split rail design is not really unrealistic but rather necessary for prolonged usage especially in fully automatic varients. unlike a modern day experimental rail gun that has a traditional barrel split rails have no physical contact with the round and are less likely to overheat. most experimental rail guns today require massive heat syncs and have fairly slow rates of fire. although the split rail needs a more advanced computer and precisely calibrated field to keep the projectile aligned

Well using an oversized "sleeve" rail is still feasible, but I think the split rails are just more cost effective.

But would that help with rail ablation due to the "wake" the round creates? That's one of the major problems plaguing full scale weaponized railguns is the damn rails being damaged every time it fires!

Well a sleeve rail is already going to be much thicker than an average barrel, whereas the lining is typically, let's say one inch, a comparable sleeve rail is going to be 3-6 inches thick to accommodate all the electrical qnd mechanical systems, I suppose we could rather easily reinforce the lining one way or another. Though I'm not qualified to say if that will solve the problem at all

Incorrect. The 'sleeve' outside the rails is indispensable because it provides the structural strength to keep the railgun from tearing itself apart each time it fires. You are correct that it poses challenges for heat disposal, but it's not something that can just be ignored. The other thing to keep in mind for infantry and vehicle-scale weapons is that open prongs can snag extremely on cables and undergrowth, and expose the inner workings of the gun to environmental debris. While it may look distinctive and cool, in a realistic setting they become distinctly less so when your weapon jams from water and dirt in the action, when it snags on every bush you pass, and when the barrel flies to pieces the moment you try to fire it.

This is only in real life, of course. In fiction, it serves as visual shorthand for 'projectile weapon what shoots fast bullets'. But it isn't easily justified by anything other than Rule of Cool. Which I believe Ryuujin specifically said was the case for Avali weapons.

It is sad that Ryuu has become... disillusioned with Starboard (for whatever reason) but I can't say I do not understand the feeling of burning out. I usually get really obsessed with a game for a few months, and then just drift away to a different game, and gradually drift back to the old game. While I find Ryuu's original reasons for abandoning development stupid, I cannot say that stopping work on a mod for a game you just don't feel anymore is stupid in and of itself.

so I see the Mod as come to a Halt. sad, but I understand. but I hope I can still as about the Avali here. so here's my question. I have been bonding with a friend and I was thinking.
what are ways an avali would express there feelings for each other they care about or like? I know it will be of close contact, and hugging and snuggling I believe would be one, but are that others?

I'm 99% sure that avali consider it a very strong gesture of endearment to give one of their long wing feathers as a gift.

yes, they make charms and dream catchers from them. even adorning them in there clothes and armor. I see it as a sigh of love and trust

Speaking of wing feathers i always wondered if avali soldiers ever replaced some of the leading wing feathers with nano blade implants. seems like a great idea adds a hidden weapon and the aerogell is light enough to still allow normal flight as long as it maintained a feather like shape

Aerogel makes a terrible blade weapon :p

As explained frequently, the reason their melee weapons utilise it is because their melee weapons are designed to be super lightweight and compact. Being little more than a hilt with the tech packed into it. Aerogel is lightweight (carries no heft) and relatively fragile - but it extremely light and can hold a (temporary) edge. The former limitation is countered by the fact they are vibro weapons, so a lack of heft does not greatly diminish cutting power, the latter is offset by the fact the blade is rapidly regenerated. A "feather" weapon would need a similar arrangement for printing new feathers and to apply an oscillation to the edge - neither of which is very feasible, not least because actually printing a feather shape is extremely difficult from a static head.

If they wanted a dedicated, melee weapon in their feathers, then ideally it'd need to be an actual metal blade

indeed. as a the most a printer can do is, at most, carve a Aerogel blade.
and Ryu? since the Avali are yours... have you, for RP means, thought of the ways Avali to show affection? like how they'd say hi, or, I love you.
