Avali Nexus 23: Title Pending

^What Bee said. Modders only got 25% with the skyrim stuff, because Bethesda took 45%, and that was officially stated. Bethesda didn't take 25%, that's what the modders got because of Bethesda.

  2. RyuujinZERO

    That's what I just said...

Bethesda said Valve got 30%, Valve said they got 25%. It's not too clear, but it's splitting hairs anyway. Both of you are ignoring the fact 25% to the modder was set by Bethesda as a starting point for the trial period - it is NOT a fixed value, and was open to renegotiation, and could be set per-developer (So each game would have a different portion for the modder). In principle the upper ceiling could have ended up as high as 70-75%

We'll never know now though as our skilled self appointed negoiators managed to haggle them down from 25% to 0% so, good job.

EDIT: Also, at the end of the day, why does it matter to you what the split is, isn't that for the modder to decide what is or isn't acceptable?

I knew about the value being set between developers, and that the 25% for modders in Skyrim wasn't the be-all end-all in terms of pay cut. They could have started with more than 25% initially, though, and probably saved some outcry from people who didn't mod.
Mostly because that would probably lower the price of mods somewhat (though a market cycle would have happened anyways - who in their right mind would pay $5 for an atmospheric mod, or even a dollar for every mod when quite a few people install over a hundred mods?) and the like. The fact remains that Bethesda and Valve each probably got more money than the people who made the mod, which yes, while that's still money, is still stupid to do, and just from looking at what happened, makes people upset because they aren't paying the modders with most of the money.
my brain is mildly fried right now because finals week so if i went full idiot there or something i apologize.

Honestly the hundred mods figure is rather fallacious and is just a tabloid soundbite designed to rile people into protesting.

    • Typically most mods you see people using will be very minor tweaks, small enough that nobody could rightly try charge for them, like a recolour of a default clothing piece, or a slightly higher grass texture.
    • The number of people with bloated mod lists tend to be few and far between.
    • It assumes that every single modder is going to charge for every single mod. I doubt this'd have been the case.
    • It assumes all of those modders will assigned fixed values to their mods, instead of using the "pay what you want" option that valve had in the pipeline.
Take for example my mods in various games.

    • Stuff like the Avian tail feathers mod I'd never charge for. It's too minor a change.
    • Mods on the scale of the Avali mod or the zombie mod in Oblivion would have likely been changed to $1 once they reach feature completion. During development they would have remained free. This seems fair for projects that took over 500 hours each - $1 across thousands of users would have soon added up, and I guarantee you'd have had better value for money than a bar of candy.
I'm not alone in this, most modders I spoke to held similar views. The view that suddenly people'd be selling horse genitalia for $15 a pop only existed insome bizzaro fantasy world with no grounding in reality.

I thought that the "pay what you want" was implemented when it went up, and no one used it. That's misinformation on my part if it was the case, though.
Many modders did choose for people to pay for their mod, because it's money, and people like getting money. A large amount of mods that were very minor visual changes (Wet and Cold, for example) cost money, too. And yeah, it was ridiculous. A market cycle of sorts would certainly have helped trim down the prices and stuff, because like both of us said, paying money for visual changes that aren't massive and far-reaching (like if someone redid skyrim like how Black Mesa redid Half-Life) is stupid and no sane person should charge, or pay for, something like that.

They SORT of had it, but it had a floor of $1. Valve had planned to enable a floor of $0 dollars, so you could "pay what you feel the creator deserves", but the feature never came out before they pulled the plug.[/QUOTE]

Ah. Okay. No wonder no one used it, then, because that's just

I didn't mean to start an argument. I just don't want Bethesda/Valve/middlemen in general taking what should rightfully be a modder's money.
This sounds a lot more reasonable, from a buyer's perspective. But I can see why they made the minimum $1, as multiplying by zero is always zero and they can't make money that way. Aw well.

Also I didn't know Valve was only charging 25%. Now I feel A. Bad for being mad at Valve, and B. Outraged at Bethesda's money-grabbing. You have ESO, darnit!

    edit: Stupid surplus quote

Other edit cause double posting is bad:

I want it to be entirely clear about my intentions: I am 100% for paying modders to mod.

That being said, the company that made the game deserves no portion of the modder's money if/when they chose to charge for that mod--we already paid them for the game, after all, and we'll likely pay for surplus content created by the developers as well, IE expansion packs.

That also being said, I am fine if they need to charge an upkeep fee (1-time, %-of-sale, or otherwise) for the server space it takes to host that mod on their website. Servers are expensive to run. I am not trying to make anyone lose money here, I just don't want a surplus of cash in a developer's gold-lined pockets when it could be going to a starving artist.

yeah we had issues with some douchebag kept downvoting someone's post so we've implemented that system to prevent any unwanted personel from accessing and messing with our community, and it should be in the Avali Nexus Thread/section.
