Given the rest of the Starbound community right now is extremely hostile towards me because I spoke out in favour of the workshop payment scheme (Which they have now overturned, leaving it's supporters pariahs) I'll pass. Only reason I'm leaving the Avali mod up is because it's not you guys who've shit all over everything, so it'd be unfair to spite you guys for their actions. Those guys don't even deserve mods.
I think it's almost funny how many people became "involved members of the modding community" over this whole thing.
It's so quiet here now. I can hear myself think... ...okay, I need noise again. I don't want to hear myself thinking anymore.
Yep, doesn't look like I'm too welcome in the Starbound community anymore. http://community.playstarbound.com/...r-mods-via-workshop.95244/page-6#post-2566388
Oh Gee. You know, Space Engineers has very good modding support, and the Devs are on the same side of "Paid Mods" as you. Plus it's 3D and space. Make Avali models and blocks. Please. The withdraw is painful.
Honestly in my opinion, getting paid for creating mods would be nice but a free and I mean full free not some demo poop stuff version would be nice too to those who cannot spend more/affort or underaged to make online purchases would be nice too but then people who could affort it will then choose only the free option and not the paid which make it kinda no sense to put up a paid version of the mod and only those who are kind enough will consider paying for it. Though a donation/donate to author option more feasable in this scenario, but that still left to debate. I rather to take modding as more of a hobby making small earnings through donation rather than something like a not exactly full time job. It's my opinion afterall and I dont have much need for money as of now even though I did spent my last dime on a 3ds but still there are authors desperate for funds. It's all down to the mod user weather to support their favorite mod author, or not.
imma post a thing about paid modding too i guess Steam's sudden and unexpected "Hey you can do paid modding for this game" was horrid. The fact they allowed Bethesda to take 45% (Which was more than what Steam was making off of it.) was also horrid. The fact there was no way to stop people from uploading mods from elsewhere and claiming they were their own was horrid. There is some good in the system, but it would require...much more polishing. A lot. A massive amount. For starters, making the percentage the game studio gets no greater than 20% is a good idea. Keeps most of the money going to the modders themselves (15% is ideal; that makes modders have 55% of the profit.) Having a way to clear mods for costing cash is a necessity as well. Valve saying "using the code of other modders and charging for it is a-okay" was just disgusting and added more fuel to the fire. That was the last thing they needed to do. And one thing that would certainly make everyone more accepting? Steam having a way to recommend a pricing for mods, taking into account people like installing a lot of them. I don't want to pay $5 for a quality-of-life mod, because if every mod cost that I'd be paying over $500. You know what's a much better pricing for mods that don't add a massive amount? 10 cents. No. I'm not making a joke. If you do the math, 10 cents is the best option. No one will bat an eye at paying 10 cents, or even 25, and if every user of your mod pays that, after 1000 downloads you made money (Earlier for 25 cents). The price recommendation would take into account what is changed, the size of the change, and how game-altering it is. Though patches that fix graphical issues/improve graphics, bugs, etc should never cost anything because that's just not cool okay
...and as the dust settles, people realise they reallly didn't think this through (Particulary note Az Az's comment, this sums up my feelings exactly)
Its literally a PR thing i honestly think... If valve didn't literally basically go "Surprise, mods can be charged!", I think the community would have not had as strong of a reaction. My main concern though was quality... we all seen how steams quality control works... I would almost never buy mods in steam, simply because i have no idea of telling if its worth it... How can i know that the 10$ mod i am getting is not utter junk with a plagiarized image from another better mod? ESPECIALLY when valve refused to refund people when this happens with full priced games. That said, there is a few mods I would LOVE to support and think are worth 5-10$...
I dont know what is worse on this sad episode of modding history... Valves poor execution of what could have been a really great thing, or the over exaggerated and rage filled reaction of those bloody fools who "marched" upon modders who were trying to do and gain (in their full right) something out of all their experience... yeah Valve really screwed up with the mod showcase... and the timing couldnt have been worse, but goddamn it if it wasnt a great idea...
anyways i'll just post this uh every new page from now on so people will actually see it. http://avalinexus.seraphimlabs.com/forum/index.php We have officially moved to our own forums, located here.
that petition has had very poor acceptance it seems... I dont know who has done more "damage" to the modding community... Valve or themselves (the mod users who "arose armies")[DOUBLEPOST=1430361054][/DOUBLEPOST] uuhh Ehks, sorry about my over reaction to your profile pic... t`was unfair of me also I want to ask, whats the new forum about?
We literally moved off this site onto our own forums. Vacated. Poof. Not quite everyone followed though. The nexus was, shall we say, encouraged to move along.
It's not that we didn't so much that we weren't in a position to. Talk to ehks or someone about it if you really want to know more.
But the nexus was ostracized, or at least thats what it looks like... its only common sense that something went horribly wrong, or that you guys just packed and left! either way, no community (or part of it) should be run down like this, for no reason
