I'm not sure it really needs to be. Afterall, water, while in the game, is not actually used by the other races in cooking or survival.

I'm not really saying it needs to be, but even if the ammonia can only be obtained with a pixels to ammonia "sink", I think it would be cool to have various avali drink recipes or maybe even use it as floor cleaner to quickly remove the grass/sand/dust layer over blocks, if possible.
If you're not going to do such a thing, maybe I'll look into doing it.

Avali food recipes certainly do need to be expanded, and ammonia would be a fitting ingredient, but where would you get it? That would require generating either a whole new resource to harvest, or finding a believable way to craft it out of existing materials.

It's possible, but may interfere with world-altering mods if they add straight up ammonia rain and lakes (though FU would be happy to adapt, seeing how well they've adjusted to the avali mod), by adding a liquid with an unique status effect that avali get immunity to.

Then there's the issue of how to balance it... You could make avali suffer a debuff or weak unstackable burning effect upon getting the Wet status condition and/or being in water, but I don't know if that's even possible.

So this is probably something Ryuujin would leave for long after core mod is done, if at all.

EDIT: whoops, it didn't notify me that there were new replies. Yeah, a simple water-ammonia converter or ammonia generator would probably suffice, if only for the recipes or people who want lore-accurate seas/ponds to build.

Lore accuracy for seas and ponds of ammonia becomes even more problematic when you remember ammonia is gaseous above -30 celcius. The fact Avali can survive at all without protection on non-iceball worlds is basically a handwave. I may come back and examine ways to "fix" that in future, but that remains long term and a big if.

I was bored last night and decided to work up some ideas... or at least names and basic descriptions of food for the avali, from very basic but useful, to very fancy and elaborate.

-Piru slush: a rather bland but filling slurry of piru flour and Ammonia, used often by hunters stalking their prey for long periods.
-Kiri biscuits: Light and fluffy, these kiri jam filled biscuits are a delectable breakfast item back on Avalon
-Krir jam: Mashed and mixed with sugar Kiri jam brings color and flavor to anything its spread on.
-Avalonian ice cream: since too much water is dangerous to an avali, the recipe adds a step to remove some of the water from the milk
-Kabobs: pieces of spiced meat, kiri fruit, and mushrooms shoved onto a stick and roasted, simple but tasty.
-Double flour bread: a special recipe using wheat and piru flour, the taste is bitter by itself, but its filling.
-Piru: dumplings: meat stuffed into piru dough then fried, very tasty but not very filling.
-Avalonian canoli: Like the Sicilian treat back on earth, these Avalon style canoli use a hint of ground nakita to add a bit of kick to it.

    I would agree on this.

Ah, so the Aeroponics tubes are supposed to be for farming? I always assumed they were the Avali version of the pipes you find in the Outpost and Glitch sewers.

Oh yeah, while I'm here, is there a use for the data chits at all? I'm endgame with the Triage version and I have 11 data chits, but aside from the certificate at the weapon station I couldn't find any uses for them.

On a similar note, would there be a possibility of a section on the Avali wiki explaining how some of the items work in Starbound? There were many times where it took me a while to understand how some things worked.

I would love to help out with this mod in regards to item descriptions, wiki explanations, and possibly art assets, but I've always had a bad habit of making promises when I already have a lot of work to do myself, and school's coming back in less than two weeks, too.

Another thing just occurred to me.

Somewhere on the wiki it mentioned that Avali have very sensitive hearing. How do they cope with gunfire? I'm not too sure about gauss and railguns, but gunfire is definitely pretty loud, and the Hailstorm is one of the loudest weapons I've ever used in Starbound.

  9. RyuujinZERO

    RyuujinZERO Supernova

    Yes, that will be happening.

Please bear in mind I havn't worked on what is now the Triage mod in over a year and a HUGE amount of content is being completely rebuilt, and may have changed in that time. The chits used to be used for item modification, this'll probably be going away now we have alt fire modes.

Starting on writing up a wiki right now on items would only confuse people because the triage implement of many many things differs form the final build implementation. I think people will be shocked at just how much is changing :p

Avalis can reduce the amount of noise entering their ears reflexively kind of like the iris in human eyes, but for ears.
If anything, avalis have trouble with bright lights, due to them lacking eye iris.

    Even more recipes= ideas yay

-Chocolate-vali: tiny Avali made of chocolate and filled with a rich caramel, great for gifts.
-Trail mix: Chunks of Nakita bark, seeds, and dried fruits.
-Nakita oil: Carefully distilled from Nakita bark, this pungent oil is great for adding a rich flavor to any dish.
-Protein shake: a step up from the Piru slush with chocolate and dried and powered meat.
-Kiri juice: Squeezed right from the fruit, very refreshing.
-powdered piru crisps: Fried Piru fronds covered in sugar

    GeminiFlame Void-Bound Voyager

Random thought for an item for the new Avali; due to their sensitive eyes instead of giving them the lantern on a stick and mining helmet, they get a sort of low grade radar/sonar/sensor pack or scanner drone (possibly emits an orange, green or dye colored light if possible to sort of simulate not being a fire like the lantern pack) for the back illumination item and a helmet/visor with night vision or some type of optic filtering for the head illumination item; functionally the same as the vanilla items, just more a flavor thing.

Even more recipes... last of what i can think of.
-Nomad's omelette: folded fried egg filled with wild onions, mushrooms, and tomato chunks
-Avali cookies: Baked sugar cookies in the shape of the avali emblem, often given to young-lings that earned a sweet treat.
-Aristocrat's steak: A prime cut of meat covered in Nakita oil and topped with crumbled blue cheese.
-Avalon Stir fry: Rice, meat, and various vegetables tossed with soy sauce and fried in a wok.

If you want to explain it away easily, I'd suggest just going the route of "subspecies that has evolved and/or been genetically modified to survive in more diverse temperatures through [jargon]" but still make their structures spawn most often on Frozen worlds.
(Speaking of which, they might have some antagonism with the Apex. Similar preference of world type, both the most advanced technologically... I could see a sort of background tech-race between the two.)

Will the avali have a different way of environmental protection, given the bulk of an EPP, it doesn't suit them maybe somehow make it to where they can use their tech console to inject various EPP nanites?

Additionally didn't it say somewhere in their lore that the race that visited them back in their history had a very close to identical gene sequence of that of humans... maybe Starbound wise, the Apex were this race

Almost forgot; You can create additional crewmember types that do not conflict with other crew mods. You could make use of this to make a crew type or two based on avali fighting tactics or roles? Though they'd apply to all species, not just avali, but that can be handwaved by that they're willing to do that particular work for avali and/or are avali-weebs :p

but yeah, given the lack of crew weapon variety (outside of the Earth's Finest mod) it'd be nice to see, for example, spearwielders. (using both the standard spears and the P-X Hails)

  17. RyuujinZERO

    RyuujinZERO Supernova

I'll be looking into starter crew options so you might be able to have a pack right out the gate.

    Yeah... no.

EPP will probably be standard but I also intend to give the player a decorative protocol drone back slot item in their ship locker that can be used to handwave back slot gear as a feature of their drone buddy or worn tech.

  18. Joneithevius

    Joneithevius Subatomic Cosmonaut

That's not what I mean. There are crew member jobs, like "classes" with different roles and abilities. like an engineer, a mechanic, a medic, etc. My proposal was you could make some extra 'jobs' that would fit the avali well if you wanted.

However, that's also a neat idea! That might be a little tricky though since the game locks you to a limit of 2 crew members per tier, but you might be able to patch the avali ship to change up the tier limit a little...

An alternate option or temporary workaround would be a set of old-fashioned spawners to generate avali on your ship so that you can do missions for them (in such a restricted space, it'd be mostly giving them food and helping them befriend other spawned NPC) until they offer to join.

Is there anything saying that we can't have a quest spawn a crew member upon completion, guaranteed? Shouldn't that be possible via a script?

What if we made a "dungeon" and make it, say, a large hand-crafted Avali settlement, and add it as a "mission" in the ship's SAIL and you go there and do some quests for the Avali and after each quest, it spawns a crew member?

The crew cap is set inside the ship file, I can easily raise it.
