Well, that is if it isn't completely random.

No, evolution is not a random process. Mutation is, but evolution isn't. Things are the way they are for a reason. The avali developed sapient because sapience (and the prerequisites for sapience, whatever they may be) provided a survival advantage.

Unless there's something Ryujiin's not telling us and the avali are an artificial race. :p

It's the kind've granular information I'm trying to avoid going into, they're pack hunting predators that developed opposable thumbs, there is a lot of mechanisms that could've led to their rise in intelligence; tool use, the need for teamwork, the need for intelligent prediction of prey behaviour etc.

We're not 100% the precise mechanism that led to human intelligence (And corvid intelligence has a lot to be desired despite being remarkable for their size.)

Avali weaponry is very closely comparable to Tau weaponry (Even have some similiarities in field tactics). Tau fuck space marines up :p

On the grand scale however, the Imperium of Man has an empire that spans about 1/4 of the milky way galaxy, encompasses scores of ecumenpolis-level worlds, has a work ethic that is the embodiment of horror and can afford to construct ships and war machines on a mind-boggling scale, both numerically and in physical size.

The Illuminate'd be screwed if they decided to purge the xeno scum ;)

Well you'd think that, as nomads, they'd be able to just like... go somewhere else if they were threatened.
I mean most of their everything is tents and disposable tools right?

not to mention their sheer existence be a crime against the imperium
resulting in death by attack of the human zerg rush we call the imperial guard
whatever space marine chapters take the honor of killing them
and the nuns with guns that we dub the sisters of battle

Id place my bet on the Big Red Button followed by clean up duty. There could be a repeat of the Tarellians. Though that probably wouldn't be much better. :p

Then again, Starbound teleporters are more advanced than the Imperium's, which might change things.

Well if you're gonna go with Starbound logic, how about the FTL drives? They can cross any distance in the same amount of time, so basically it's like "Welp cya I'm in another galaxy now."
    Nerf pls. o3o

all avali just leave that galaxy for another

Heck, strap one to an asteroid and you've got yourself an FTL projectile.

I kinda doubted the imperium is undefeatable, I mean they kinda overexerted with their constant fights with daemons and all those supernatural stuffs, I mean their ships looks like dreadnoughts than proper starship, the cannons(even some guns) are kinda howitzers(big caliber short barrel, very poor range/low velocity), and their armored infantry seemed very bulky,((also I've seen an image gallery of medieval reenactment in modern vehicle/weapons and some commented Warhammer 40k in a nutshell so I assume they also uses medieval tactics with use of modern weapons?))

They seemed kinda emphasize on heavy armor and sacrifice alot of their mobility, sure you cant fight them head on but fast movers could flank behind and hit from the back or any weakpoints, atleast that's how I got killed by light vehicles while in a pre patched Challenger 1.

thats why when the tau are dug in, it is really dangerous to take them head on, their ranged firepower can not be beat with slow tactics

    What about... y'know, orbital support?

I'm not sure, if you won orbital space you already achieve decisive victory with orbital supremacy bombarding the ground below, unless there's planetary defence (as of my previous discussions) where if a ship has low range(howitzer like guns) you'll defiantly cant get close without being penned by something larger than a thick telephone pole penetrating your ship which you have to send in small squad to disable the planetary defence atleast on one side/create a blind spot before any ships can get near. which you have to fish on surface defences

    We do actually?

The Imperial Navy isn't something you defeat without some serious firepower, or ship prows thicker than thick, or ships so fast that the name of them becomes synonymous with "Moving Target."
Sometimes though they just don't make it to where they need to be due to warp shenanigans, or the usual poor management of assets, in which case there's relatively uncontested orbital control.

Most of them have a train plow like front suggesting that's probably the thickest part, unless they're thick on all sides I would question how it moved and shoot, but there's clearly engine and hull mounted gun ports so there's probably some soft spot one could hit through from the sides, top, bottom and back(they also have an exposed bridge which is something you dont want people to target at), remember what I how a Wiesel AWC and a VBL manage to get behind and start poking 20-30mm holes on my Challenger's engine, I cant turn fast because I'm heavy and the turret cant depress as much while looking behind, so unless the opposing side is incompetent light fast firing ships could get on the sides, top, bottom and back instead of dealing the ship head on.

Edit, also all those uneven surface, they're gonna look big on radar,

The sides of their ships are gun batteries, and it's not as clunky as one would think. The entire ship tends to be protected by a void shield (Force field) to boot, it can be busted though. Stealth is very low on the priority list. :p
Being anywhere near one is a big risk due to both boarding of masses of humans and servitors through mildly successful boarding tubes and, if it's a fancy ship, the teleportarium (Imagine teleporter from FTL). The very large guns on each broadside are also pretty unsettling if you can't stay on it's stern or prow. There are usually secondary weapons on the top of the ship as well, those can rotate freely and relatively quickly. Finally, if we're talking anything bigger than a frigate/escort these ships are massive, very massive if it's a battleship. The best bet for smashing one is to either out-do it in close range through even more guns or ramming, outnumbering it, or out-ranging it which can be difficult if you face one that happens to have a nova-cannon on it. Out-manuevering is also an option, but the only truly 'safe' places are directly below it and directly behind it and micro-warp-jumps can cause you plenty of grief if the ship has the capability, (A short-range teleport of the entire ship).
Ramming isn't a priority, but it's armored well and is used here and there to slam into things and to help close distances without losing the entire front-half of the ship.

That said, the Avali could reasonably out-range or outmaneuver one, but a boarding would be a complete disaster, (Drugged up nutters and cyborgs mixed in with the usual levy fodder that characterize Iggys). But comparing anything to 40K is pretty unfair, considering 40K is easily the universe with the most widely OP groups.
I do wonder just how the Avali would manage ship-on-ship combat, I'd imagine something very similar to ground-based combat, quick and light.

Looking over the wiki, I think they'd go quick and light.
