This is, of course, assuming the Avali don't also have the word "Avalon" and that it doesn't mean something else entirely in their language, much like some words in Human languages.

    That is true.

I'm now imagining that the Avali would have a drone version of the Hover Wheelchair mod.

On another note, what about the Avali hoverbike in the Triage edition? Would that count as some sort of civilian-grade vehicle? Not sure if everybody would just happen to have a gun drone handy.

It's probably the most offensive insult possible.

Actually, they probably have more than one word for themselves, since Ryujiin said they have more than one language.

What do humans call themselves and their homeworld?

Before you say "Human", bare in mind that is the English word. In Croatian it'd be "Ijudski", In Welsh, "Dynol". "Czlowiek" for the Polish and so on.

What do the Avali call themselves? - That really depends what language the Avali you're asking speaks ;)

I havn't tested the triage hovercar. It's not my creation at any rate or to my knowledge based on any sort've canon vehicle.

Actual Avali language would be pretty hard to represent, wouldn't it? I always assumed it would consist mostly of a variety of chitters, chirps, and squeaks that would be almost impossible for a human larynx to properly pronounce.

Yeah, just like how human language is consisted mostly of screams, grunts, and screeches, right? :p Why do you think alien languages would have to rely solely on their feral noises?

As opposed to assuming all species speak languages perfectly compatible with all others? In which case, let's see you try speaking Wookie, or something. I'm just assuming that different species have different vocal structures that could produce sounds that other species cannot, or cannot produce the sounds that others can (have you seen Ryuujin's concepts of their teeth? That alone would be an influencing factor), and that this would undoubtedly be part of their language.

communication is just a signal(peak and trough) though a measurable medium(EM waves/air vibrations-pressure/pheromones) with a varying amplitude and frequency of energy or chemical concentration, is correct sequence it could become sounding of a word or on and off states of a binary code, to anything that cant understand it it's just noise.

By that same reasoning the Avian language would be hard to represent yet you see it all over there temples, any reasonably advance race would have to have a coherent language with grammar, syntax and all that.

I was thinking of something like the LEP from the Artemis Fowl books, both consisting of high-tech short races that humans would find endearing.

I don't think Holly would be quite as cute as a fluffy space raptor.

This still sort of bothers me. The Illuminate makes up a huge percentage of the Avali population, and is the most organized group.
I would imagine that, being on the verge of the singularity, and being so incredibly connected, it would make sense for their language to have become standardized, even if it is a weird mishmash of multiple languages that used to be there before. I mean, I know we have the Internet and this hasn't happened to us yet, but the Avali go far beyond the Internet. Not to mention, even we have tried to make standardized languages in the past, albeit often misguidedly (see: Esperanto), and without means of fast spreading, they died out very fast.

Even if not the only language, wouldn't the Illuminate have a sort of "inter-group standard communication common language" in order to stay so organized easily? I mean imagine you have 50% of even just Earth's population under your indirect rule, but they all speak different languages. It'd be a mess to manage.
Given that over half of the known population is Illuminate, and such a language would be the most widespread among the Avali population, I'd say it's very likely that at the very least other races would consider this to be "The Avali Language" since it'd likely be their most common interaction.

The Independants and Rogues, not so much.

This would also give you a reason to have mostly-consistent letters shown ingame on objects and stuff, as most Illuminate tech/stuff/etc. would probably be labelled/written in the common language.

Sufficient technological prowess makes the specifics of languages largely irrelevant through translation algorithms.

I understand your argument from logistics, but it seems more likely to create software to translate between languages than for your entire population adopt a single dialect.

I have to agree with Shaadaris, a race of the Avali's level of technology would have to have SOME kind unified language. I know the universal translator gimmick works in Star Trek but it simply isn't practical.

Could you clarify for what reason you believe it isn't practical?

Or, you know, English, which is probably the biggest trade language, routinely taught to children in countries that don't speak English internally. English is also the language of science.

This, even science says at some point language will be unified just to make things easier, though they think it may be cut down to 1-3 languages, though the main two are english and mandrin chinese.

anyway enough putting RL in a game, as far as we know the fluffy space raptors inately understand each other and don't really care about language. or wait is this stuff written out?
