Not sure if I'm posting in the right section (sorry please move if not), but title is pretty self-explanatory :

I'd kill for an autosort button in the inventory. I know a lot of people like to sort stuff themselves manually (and I do too to some extent), but yeah that would be a HUGE help and time saver, especially if said autosort function would always sort stuff in a certain hierarchical order.

I just love that stuff when games have it, and I think it would be particularly useful in a game like Starbound.

I also would commit a felony for an autosort button, even if all it did was move everything together - I've got a bunch of items all over the place in my inventory and empty spaces between them. Manual sortings all well and good, but an autosort of some description would make it easier for players who've played for a bunch of time without managing their inventory at all by providing a "clean start" so's to speak.

Bumping this, cause the more I play the more obvious and needed it becomes for me.

Autosort with a hierarchical order and stuff would be HEAVEN.

Autosorting would be wonderful. Maybe you could even customize it somehow, like telling it where to put certain items when they're in the inventory.

I could of sworn this was already being planned as a feature in that thread with the list of game information. Dunno if it was a for sure or not.

I'd really like to get some official feedback, as to whether or not such a feature is at least planned ?

    Would be neat.

Autosort would be pretty awesome, especially if it could work on containers too. If it never became official content, it'd certainly be one of my favorite mods.

I may be the minority, but I really despise Autosort buttons. They're always conveniently placed near the inventory screen in a spot where you would naturally click or place the mouse. I hate autosort, because I sort things my own way (borderline-OCD I suspect) and I hate that one accidental click can screw up my whole inventory.

If it autosorted only the background blocks bag, then I would have no problems with that. That bag is almost as big a train wreck as Lindsay Lohan.

Yeah, I get that. I guess it could just be placed so that you don't misclick on it, I don't know... Doesn't seem like such a big or impossible issue to me to disallow the huge benefits of having such a feature for people who'd like it (and they seem to be a lot).

But it'd be relevant only if it were to autosort everything, not just background blocks cause it's not so much a matter of quantity of blocks or items rather than the diversity, and when you have like a zillion different icons and stuff in your inventory, yeah, it would be awesome to have a button that allows to rearrange everything automatically in a logical, hierarchical order imo.

This is the kicker, hehe. How does a member of the dev team know what the majority of players (or at least, the "Average Player") deems logical and hierarchical? Do they first sort all the foods, then the tools, then the ores, then the weapons? Do they go horizantally first, or vertically?

Personally, I arrange my inventory as such:

    F r e e _ S p a c e
    F r e e _ S p a c e
    o r e s ______ food _____ fuel
    b a r s ______ regen food fuel
This way, the bottom of my inventory is static, and represents the things that I don't want to store or rearrange a lot. The top half of my inventory is the "ill-gotten gains" portion, which will likely find its way into a locker on my ship or home base. This would be a nightmare to program for the devs, since it isn't very procedurally-viable. They would need to iterate through the inventory to find Row #3, and then place ores in ascending value, then one vertical stack of food (regular food at the top, regen food at the bottom), then place fuels along the far right side, vertically, etc...

Yes, I'm weird. But this allows me the fastest cleanup after dungeon runs and planet pillaging!

On another note, Terraria's autosort made me really unhappy, since they assumed that everyone wanted their inventory filled from the top left, proceeding horizantally, then the second row, etc. I could never find anything, and having some items of a type on the far right side and some of that same type on the far left side (when the sort encountered the end of the row) drove me nuts =P

Well, like I said I hear ya and I get where you're coming from. But the whole idea of this is to be **OPTIONNAL*. I really can't think of any single reason to warrant the benefits for those who see them as long as it's not forced onto those like you, who'd rather sort everything themselves.

There could even be like an option in the settings, like a checkbox to have the inventory automatically sorted by default. But anyways, I need dis in my life real bad (and many others too) and you could just skip it, and everyone would be happy :)
