Bug/Issue Audio cuts out if too many clips are playing

    Kver Yeah, You!

Sound effects and music in the game sometimes "cut out" when other sound effects begin. This is repeatable across play sessions.

Generally it feels like the Linux version can only pay a set number of audio clips at a time, stopping running audio clips when start new ones if "too many sounds are playing at once".

    Examples:
Music will suddenly stop if a Keg bubbles
The ambient breeze sound will cut if a fence opens
Cave ambience will stop when a creature emits sound.
Short sound effects such as a cow "moo" can also be cut off in a similar manner.

Generally, any sound can cut off any other sound.

Possibly related, but rapidly firing audio samples (such as the text "popping" sounds) seem clicky, almost as if they were playing through an old broken speaker. Could be a result of them "cutting" in and out Let me know if you want this is a separate report.

    OS
Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Ubuntu derivative with the Plasma Desktop)

While I didn't test on Windows proper, this issue is NOT present when running the game through WINE (a windows compatibility layer)

I'll look up my build number tonight, apologies I don't have it at the moment.

Thank you for the great work.

Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce these issues on either my 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04, 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04 VMs. Some more information might help...
      • Are you using the default sound server in Kubuntu (pulseaudio) or have you set up an alternative one, e.g. ALSA?
      • Do you have many other applications running that are playing audio?
      • How much free memory do you have when this happens? How much CPU is being used?
      • If you have mono installed would you be able to run the game from a terminal with this, reproduce the issue once and send the monolog.txt log it creates?
        Code:
        export MONO_LOG_LEVEL=debug && mono -v StardewValley.exe >monolog.txt

        Kver Yeah, You!

Ack, sorry, got in late last night, didn't get a chance to open up the game and check my version. Slap me around if I say the same thing tomorrow. :p

As per what I can tell you now... Because I'm terrible and never think to do this stuff when I'm home...
        • I'm using the defaults (Pulseaudio), the only "non-standard" thing is Kubuntu-Backports which gives more up-to-date Plasma, but that shouldn't affect sound.
        • I can say the app has run with nothing else playing audio, I specifically checked exactly that first. ;)
        • You know, I think I might have Mono installed. If not I don't even mind slapping it on if it helps. I'll test that and send you the log.
On a side note, I'll also get the game on my laptop (another Ubuntu device); I'll see if I can reproduce there.

I will note that this is running on a machine which has undergone several major 'dirty' updates over its lifetime... I might be upgrading my computer with a fresh installation soon; if it assists in the debugging process would you rather me wait in case it would fix itself by doing so? As much as I'd like it to work for me by doing that, I'd hate for someone to Google this in three months to a non-answer. Truthfully I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't more of an "old crufty installation" issue.

        Thanks again.

I'm getting the same issue with clipped sound effects on OS X El Capitan.

I find it happens more often while I'm fishing on a non-rainy day, if that'll help you reproduce it.

We're investigating the issue. We'll let you know when we have some more information or a fix.

In the meantime, if you think of any more relevant information or can provide a log, please do so!

We'll hopefully have a fix in the next few days.

So there is no fix for now? I think I experienced the same issue here, random audio cuts.

Additional and possibly related issue: When fishing, the charging sound of the fishing rod (before releasing the button and throwing the rod) plays exactly once and will only reappear (just once, again) after restarting the game.
                  Maybe this helps.

We've already released a build with a fix for this. Are you still experiencing this issue?

Yep. But actually, I just realised I'm not using that build as it's apparently not distributed via GOG yet.
The GOG build got it's last change more than two weeks before your fix announcement in this thread.
