Asteroid Fields are such a disappointment!

I was really excited when I saw that asteroids were now accessible from space. Having never explored one when they were the top of planets due to the difficulty of getting leather in higher sectors. So I got my survival gear, show armor and my nanostoves ready, landed and noticed two things:

    1. There was a whole lot of gravity. Obviously a zero gravity environment would strand anyone without the tech to move around, and there should just the slightest pull (not necessarily down, but I'm not nitpicking there), but there was more gravity than I've found on some planets.

    2. I was surrounded by birds and animals. More than I would typically encounter on a single screen on a planet. Now I've personally never been to a real-life asteroid field, and maybe they are just teeming with life. And maybe it was a false assumption that since air was removed that non-sentient life would be too.

I guess imagined that it would be almost entirely environmental hazards with sentient outposts and the occasional exogorth (or other rare space beasts), with the difficulty arising from getting around and managing exposure and mining through extremely tough space rocks, not just another planet type with giant holes in the floor and tons of easily accessible ore.

Am I the only one who was expecting something else?

They are still very much a work in progress. What is in right now is pretty much just a frame work to build on.

    Well...

This. And to expand further, at the moment gravity for every biome is set randomly between a value of 25 and 80. You can see this in planetgen.config

    Code:
      "gravityRange" : [25, 80],
That said, I would certainly like to see some more structure and logic to the gravity system than just a random number.

Wish space was like a liquid layer with the right equipment. Otherwise its just a super low gravity.
A space helmet should let you breath.
A space chest should help against cold
The Survival system should let you "swim".
    Space boots for movement speed.
Have multiple tiers of each increasing your time in open space. Survival systems using energy to "swim", higher tiers use less.
And it should not work for water.

I know it is. And it's a fantastic work in progress. This is really the only thing I've found to complain about. Mostly the animals. I guess as it is if they turned off the animals it would just be free farm right now.

I just had myself so excited, I suppose it was a little deflating.

Well, I'll get back to playing then.

We'll agree to disagree here, as Asteroid fields are without a doubt my favorite biome. Once you get grappling hook, anyways

I agree, their should be no animals & less gravity but I think their already working on it, honeslty. :)

    This.

Tier 10 armor + Survival System + Grapple Hook = Win

Sure, it's a bit silly to see birds and animals and things, but Asteroid Fields are awesome training for grapple slingshotting.

Also, they just got introduced, give them some time to apply a little polish to them

I think there should be at least a few animals that have adapted, but you're right. The difficulty of the asteroid field should be more environmental than from hostiles.

It's a rather really simple implementation of asteroid fields now, you can even notice it has only one type of "dungeon". I assume developers have some plants on expanding this, and I really hope they intend to add a lot of new stuff. Still, the current primitiveness of the asteroid field is expected just as it's expected to be improved eventually, hopefully soon.

    1. The lifeforms should be unique, adapted to a zero G environment.

    2. Environment needs to be zero G!

There should only be zero-G if there would be some kind of easily obtained tech that allows you to move around in zero-G.

Personally I would prefer a some sort of "firearm" that pushes you into the direction you're pointing when you fire it, but that would still suck without proper zero-g animations.

Something like monopropellant would be nice. You would only have a limited amount of fuel and you would either need to craft more or refill at your ship or base. I do like the idea of firearms pushing you back, but I don't think a type of gun made specifically for propulsion would be worth implementing.

to much roleplay. people will complain its not sandbox enough.

I'd say limited fuel is a bad idea as it increases the chance of getting stuck when mining and so on, better leave it energy-dependant or just free,

Its as specialized as racial armor for a specific power. And unlike racial armors. its not something you need to carry on you all the time "just in case". You plan on being in a vacuum way in advance.

The only thing about asteroid fields that shits me to tears is the lack of gear to actually be able to 'use' them until you hit tier 4 and get the survival gear.

The reason for this is you see them in alpha sector, but if you go there you suffocate and die pretty fast. I may be missing something but I find it very annoying compared to before they where implemented and you could only access them via derp pillaring up on a planet for 10 minutes.

    Just some thoughts

asteroid fields are one of my favorite places to mine. I was able to obtain Butterfly Boost before I ever had a chance to go to a field, so I never really had any problem getting around them. Also, every asteroid field I've been to (and I've been to a lot) always had lower gravity than the planets I've been to. Don't know if that's just my random luck, though. I would like to see a bit more logic applied to them though, because until I had higher tier armor I had to stop and place a campfire to warm up every so often.

Has anyone else noticed that it gets warmer at "night" in asteroid fields?

Definitely a bug, apparently weather on asteroids is not set properly yet.
