Which would you prefer to own or colonise?

  1. An Asteroid

What I was thinking, this is obviously done after you have set-up a base of operation and have space monitoring equipment, but have random "asteroids" or "space hulks" (like the Judgement of Carrion, for you Dawn of War fans out there) appear, which can be detected. Once detected you can send exploration teams or individually...curiosity sake...go and explore them.

With the Asteroid, you can go there and research the rock, to see whether it is of value; containing minerals or valuable rocks, it could be an "Alien" or "Space Pirate" occupied asteroid and turn hostile if you get to curious or just out of hostility, or the asteroid could turn out to be a just a piece of useless rock floating through space; which in turn you can convert into a floating space base...maybe...?

With the Space Hulk, this is much more interesting, where it is a floating Space Ship or Space Station, that went exploring and disappeared, and now re-appeared. Once again, you can send your discovery team or once again, individually...curiosity will have definitely killed the cat that time...to go and explore the space giant. On it, you can maybe discover and possible salvage technology, valuable goods, star-maps/star-charts, journals, hostiles etc. With these, many things can branch out from here:
    • Technology, you could bring back and use it to retro-fit your current vehicles, structures, etc.
    • Valuable goods, maybe you discover a valuable hat...TF2 has definitely gotten to me...or maybe you discover a special power core, which then can be used for different things back in base
    • Star-Maps/Star-Charts, this would be the coolest as you can find Uncharted...see what I did there...territories or routes or planets, that you can use or shortcut through or explore
    • Journals, you find old journals of previous occupants or the ship/station; the journals could contain background story of what happened or things that happened to the ship/station, it could activate a side quest...yay more missions...or they can contain vital information that unlocks more of the ship
    • Hostiles, this could be fun, fighting creatures that you would not find anywhere else, like space voidlings or space ghost or maybe even space pirates...?
Well that is my idea for a sort of extra environment or extra thing in game.

If you have any feedback, criticisms or extra ideas feel free to share your thoughts, we are all friends here.

I definetly have to vote for the hulk as you get to clean it out, flaming whatever gribbly criters are living in it before you set up shop

I know right, the Space Hulk would be pretty awesome, but then again, having an Asteroid that can randomly take you palces woulkd be pretty cool too :D

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated :D

Planets with large asteroid belts could be colonized for a larger population, with a great view! or if you just needed the resources, build an automated planet/asteroid breaking machine, that would dig it all, and sort the materials you desired, while you were off-ship exploring new planets.

Man that would be pretty awesome too! colonising one of the asteroids and having it watch over the planet! Great idea dude!

It would be a lovely view, being able to look down on your planet, from the porch of your house, build into the asteroid. It would even make for great Real Estate, colonize the planet, then its asteroids, selling them to the highest bidder. "Welcome to the neighbourhood, I live on the 3rd rock to the left."

Oh man like in Futurama! Amy and her family are asteroid farmers...probably butchering that...
And by the way, your display picture says DopeFish Lives, is that a reference to Ladder Goat, if that is, BEST VIDEO EVER! I laugh every time!

Dopefish lives is from a lot of old games, like Wacky Wheels and Commander Keen, cant say I knew Ladder Goat, but now I must look it up!

I belive Amy's father owned Mars. Them and their trouble with the indigenous tribes, that they bribed with petty rocks (a 6 feet tall diamond... petty indeed)

I want to colonise everything already! give it to me now ! :D
(that should be a third option lol)

I don't know if "colonize" is the right word for it. Perhaps just setting up a bass of ops or something, or maybe asteroids can be multiplayer lobbies. If there is to be a progressive mining feature in this game, maybe a large mining facility for asteroids or boarding pods for space hulks. You can probably eventually build up the space hulks to be secondary facilities, or just tear them completely down for resources.

Well, colonizing the planet, then using shuttle to get to the moons/asteroids orbiting, and doing whatever you wish, mining, building, and so on.

I KNOW RIGHT! All this talk about colonising is making me want to colonise even more!
Well set-up base, colonising, whatever, both works out great! And the space hulk should not be able to be stripped down, what a waste of a perfectly great vessel, but then again stripping it of it's resources would be quite FANTASTIC!
    AGREED!

An asteroid would be fun to colonize.

Then the asteroid goes on a collision course with a planet and burns up in the atmosphere.

    ...Nuts.

That would be awesome right...the randomness of that would be scary...the wait or imminent danger of that happening is GREAT!

Yeah, unless that's exactly what you want...

And as Dwarf Fortress teaches us, LOSING IS FUN! Even more so in this case as dying not necessarily means the end of the game :)

And... who said the things in the Space Hulk would be happy only with driving people away of it? If it's multiplayer, it would be awesome to be peacefully in a planet, just enjoying the sun when a HUGE Space Hulk, damaged and ancient lands and starts making bases and considering me and other players a hostile being...

...also: Space Hulks, as hinted above, can be things of REALLY a long time ago, since the space is big, things get lost... so, the main problem in a Space Hulk in my opinion is not the "what could be there", is "what could be there that i DON'T UNDERSTAND" :cautious:... and the accidents that could happen. The said Hulk being in a self-destruction countdown, the release of a zombie virus, a teleportation to a unknown ruins site... ah, the possibilities... *_*

Oh man dude you totally got this one down...YES THIS! Just pure mystery is what I find intriguing about the Space Hulk.

Thanks again for giving your view mate :D

The first thing i thought of was Doomsday via Asteroid or Comet. A random chance its gonna strike your planet and your planet is going to die. Unless you have the sort of technology built up to go through the steps of the object's destruction. Step 1: You have the technology to detect a object is headed towards you before its literally right above you and you have barely any time to act. Step 2: You with even more advanced technology either, Massively Nuke the object, make a rocket push it for a diversion, or even the possibility of moving your planet out of the way (thats a little extreme though) This may come later in the game when you hit a milestone or randomly.

Oh man the idea of your planet being in imminent danger would be awesome. If for example you are not ready for situations like these. But obviously here will be a set time limit beforehand to when it can happen because you don't want it to happen the first night you play. But yeah the process of going through how to detect and stop would be awesome. This would be like Armageddon, the movie, I would totally chum a Bruce Willis and sacrifice myself :D

Also thank you for the wonderful input. Appreciate it.
