I just don`t agree with the idea of when you start the game, you are going to spawn with some pretty basic equipment and a super pre-built spaceship that only needs fuel to cross a galaxy, or even more, when you enter one mutiplayer game, it will be much more believable to gather with your friends and use ONE spaceship that you ALL worked hard to do, instead of everybody going to it`s own ``gift`` spaceship and travel to another planet. Even if the fuel is hard to find, that doesn`t seems right to me, but i already saw you ( devs ) trying to make the spaceship possible to build, or at least, add more parts to it, and it became ugly as hell. So what about when you start the game with a new character, you will need to at least build one house and in this house make one sort of machinery capable of building a spaceship ( like the pre-build ones that each class have ) ? So here is what i think it should look like in the game: When you see that it's time to go to another planet, you'll need to gather resources of your starting planet and build some sort of space center to build your first and simple spaceship ( that allow close space travel due to it's small fuel tank and just one player to travel at a time ). As the game evolves you and your friends ( i believe that 70% or more of the Starbound comunnity will play this within a multiplayer server ) must need to gather much larger amounts of resources to use the same space center and build a larger spaceship, capable of transporting larger amounts of players on further distances and able to store resources in it for your space journeys. This way, space travel passes to be not just a way to move to another planet, it starts to seem real, it will be a goal that must be achieved by the player. The spaceships don't have to be all build by the player, you'll just need to gather the resources needed to build the space center, then the space center will assemble the ''pre-build'' ( like the ones that already exists for each race ) spaceships as soon as you provide it the right resources! Hope you guys enjoyed my idea, and sorry if there are many english errors, my native language it's not english but i've tried my best!! =) Click here to vote!

i was fine up to the part where it limited your space exploration; i like the current system. yea, most games start you off with pretty poor equips but the spaceship is..well...necessary! fuel is needed sure; but once you finish up the tutorial missions(or skip them) and find your find it your fuel it is pretty much the go signal to explore and feel the real game! prolonging this effect might frustrate the player "wait; how much for a ship?" "this is taking a while" "ugh; i just wanna find a snow planet already" we currently don't know how they are going to add to ships and it might use a ship building console or factory crafted but...in my opinion, i like this starting ship. it's simple, quick and ready for use.
I totally agree with you, but my point is not to make the first ship something unreachable, or not even hard to get ( i don't care if it will be easy to get the materials to make your space center and first ship, i just want it be logical, believable ). What i want is that when you and your friends reach what we would call the mid and the end game, IF you feel the need or just want to upgrade your spaceship, you can do it. This most evolved ships, like any other end game equipment, should be way more difficult to get. The planetary exploration will be easily one of the funniest parts of this game for sure, i'm just thinking of a way that this "function" of the game could be more enjoyable...
And you make a valid point from the start. Could see this being a lot of fun but as all features tend to have, there will be some struggle. starbound is something big so having a neat way to get things would be fresh; I never said i gave it a downvote.
Yay! Thanks for the support good sir, i'm not hoping that we gonna see this in beta, but yeah, i don't know, maybe the devs can make it happen with one update in the future... Hope my friend!!
Ooh! good idea, but this is what i was thinking of: You start with a Very Very Very Basic Ship, That travels short, But needs low fuel, Then you can upgrade the fuel tank, paint it, and stuff
just a thought; rather than limiting the actual amount of space the ship can travel through a legit limiter why not make the fuel the limiter? that way you can still get to your friends if you have stocked up enough fuel.
The only problem is the intros have you in a ship...luckily, i have a few ways around this. It can crash land and you need to rebuild a new ship maybe using some salvaged parts. It can say that the races are leaving the planet, but you actually start on it and sorta have a race against time to construct a ship (while fending off tentacles like the human intro) The ship that leaves is a drop pod ship and when it flies over a planet it drops down little drop pods (something like halo 2 if you've played it, and no, im not saying rip it off, just a comparison) and then you have to start anew from there alone/with friends/random npc thats worth nothing and dies almost instantly (lol)
I'm definitely liking the idea of not having a ship right off the bat and working towards obtaining it, and hopefully having the fuel for distance and larger fuel cells/tanks or whatever for larger distance travel. Also being able to upgrade the ship would be a nice feature, like having ship tech that will help you on the planets. (examples: creature detection, treasure detection, dungeon closest direction detection, teleport back to ship upgrade (have the ship only be landable or just above land surface at first (this would be benificial if it was a water world (if such a thing exists))), a recharge station for those electronic gadgets or weapons, healing station, chemistry lab, and whatever ideas might flow along with owning a space ship.) Good opening thread, i wouldn't have gone the direction of saying I don't like what the creators have done so far with the games direction, but just stated your opinion on what you think could make it more enjoyable and a certainly a more rewarding experience.) It's basically like a Trophy; I finally got a ship to leave this planet, or I got some cool upgrade for my ship that does this for me....etc,.) Great Idea though and I really hope this idea takes off. I know they have put a lot of work into Starbound already, and it's easily apparent by the videos on youtube that they want a release date this year, so seeing something added like this might be a bit much for their tasking. But I'm certainly going to hope they can squeeze this in!
I've seen other posts about different ways of customizing and "building" your ship. They either look blocky or they could *possibly* be tricky to implement. Frankly, this game is amazing already. I'll just be happy with getting to choose bigger and unique ships from pre-made designs by the developers. Still, making my ship my own in that way is a thrilling idea... As far as having to work up from scratch, I think that idea would work better if there was an NPC at the beginning(Guide NPC?) that would give you a quest to build your first ship. I see it as being a tiny little dingy only suitable to get you to your starting ship(wherever that may be). This idea would work well if you started being dumped on a small moon, and your "starting ship" was planet-side.
