Are you okay with part of the funds being towards living expenses?

I'd much prefer it if the devs, instead of using that money to live, spent it all on getting Morgan Freeman to do a sweet voice over before the intro screen.

I think we can all agree on this.

I was going to avoid this thread at first, but I'm manned up and gotten out of my lazy chair to give my views.

Do I mind where the funds are going? No, not at all!

First of all, what else is the money going to do? Sadly you cannot just inject money into the game to make it better, and I don't think that hiring more staff would be a good idea for an indie company that is just starting up. The team is bigger than most indies already, any more would divide the cash too much.
Second, indie development is a risky thing to do. It's like working overtime, except you don't get a payoff until the end if it succeeds. That means you are either balancing indie work and your current place of employment... or working fully on the game using saved funds. These funds, however will not and never will last forever meaning that working full time on an indie game that is not released is even riskier (It's pretty much unemployment).

Though the most important thing in my mind right now is... Erm, going back to my first point... what else is it going to do? D: Using it as living expenses means that the developers can work full-time, comfortably.

Kinda seems like a dumb question, ultimately developing Starbound is a job and like any other job, it's done to pay the bills.
Some people are lucky enough to get a job they enjoy, or in this case, turn what they enjoy doing into job.

Maybe we should go the cheaper route and get a morgan freeman impersonator?

    Also, check this out.

Impersonators, as good as they will be, will never be like if it was the original person.

Anyway, I would prefer Schwarzenegger voice, maybe as your spaceship voice... "Get your ass to Mars"

What else would preorder funds go to? It's an indie team, in order to work on the game they need the money to live. Living isn't free. Anyone that has a problem with this has to be a minor that doesn't live under their own roof. You can't just decide to spend a year working on a game, quit your other jobs, and get by.

6 Votes for "No" is just crazy. That's still 6 to many people that have to be living in a hole. No offense to those 6 votes.

Anyway, the 6(?) devs aren't going to use $1m in living expenses. They will dip into the funds to get by, food, rent, etc... but a large % of that will still go to the game and (gasp) profits that they deserve to spend on what they want.

We're talking about people who essentially have no other major source of income. If I recall correctly, this whole pre-order business actually allowed several of the devs to quit their day jobs in order to work on Starbound full time. It'd be rather naive for one to think this would not include living expenses. Tiy and the rest of the group need a place to live and food to feed themselves while working full time on Starbound. I'd honestly be surprised if they didn't use a small amount of the pre-order money to keep themselves able to continue working on this project.

Now, if word got out that the Devs were using the money to buy mansions with butlers and pet tigers and jet boats... well, that's a different story. But I very highly doubt that is the case.

They'll probably do that after Starbound is released and has made them even more millions of dollars. :p

You...purchased a product. The creators are free to do with the money what they want. Either way, I'd rather that they work on the game more with the money from pre-orders instead of having to hold two jobs just because some people feel that their money is too good to be used on food or whatever.
