Are we too greedy?

This is a bit of a rant and a topic that I've wanted to bring up for discussion. So, bear with me and read my post below, than post what you think.
Now, considering you've read the thread's title (which I would assume you have), you're probably wondering what I mean by "greedy". What I mean is that all those little requests to "see more information" or "more gameplay videos" and things like that from the developers. I've noticed this for awhile and it's been bugging me.

Before I get into all the nitty-gritty, I just want to give proof that this is present on these forums.
The first examples are these lazy, curt little topics that simply go right out and ask for gameplay/screenshots/info.
Such as this.

Than there's the whole "FAQ" section. While this really isn't a big factor of greed, it is a bit annoying to see all the "Is there going to be this?" or "When will we see that?" topics. I complained about all those pointless (perhaps postfarming) threads in the feedback forum [here], and Omni told me that if the FAQ section wasn't there, such topics would just end up in another forum. So, basically put, the FAQ section is just where all those mostly pointless topics get thrown into. "Closing the FAQ section will just mean that those sorts of threads get posted in the Starbound Main Discussion. Not that those sorts of questions won't get asked. It's better to corral them somewhere."

Almost every day I hear something like "we haven't gotten any gameplay in awhile" or "all we have is textual stuff". A good amount of people are also suggesting daily updates, images, or monsters.
And now for the ranting part of this thread.

First of all, how greedy can you be? We get a new monster every week, a beautiful wallpaper every month, and screenshots on twitter 1 or 2 times a week. Not to mention the daily visits from developers on the IRC, and constant livestreaming from the coders. So, why ask for more? Really? And then you hear people complaining about how the release date was pushed back. A bit ridiculous. And don't even get me started on beta. Most people just want an early copy of the game to play early. It's as simple as that. I don't want to hear all the "oh, open beta will really help sales" or "you get more funding". No. You just want early access. Only a small percentage of those in favor of beta would actually beta-test and search for bugs.

So, let's wrap everything up into a small, neat little paragraph here. First: Don't deny that people here are greedy for more info or gameplay. It's a fact, and there are a countless amount of topics I could link here that would prove my point. Second: Let the developers be. Whenever I see Tiy enter the IRC, he is flooded with questions. Don't bug the developers about getting more screenshots and gameplay out, because, they're already busy enough. The game will be released when it is. Have patience. It's their choice whether to do beta or not, and no form of begging or greed is going influence yourself in their decision.

I really think the community would be a better place if people were just a bit more patient whilst waiting for the game, and to just shut their mouths about beta.

 

Greed is in the nature of humans, at least at some point. It's why you never see me asking for any of that.

 

I dont think it's greedy to ask questions personally. As for people wanting more updates, we do get a lot from the devs, so I partialy agree with you there.

We should still have open Beta though. The bugs that are the hardest to find are the ones we find on accident.

 

Well I agreed with you on most of the points. Only with one I must disagree, but I may be wrong with it. We have seen tons of pictures, screens, wallpapers. FAQ is huge. But we have seen only 3 videos. In my opinion it would be great to see at least one new video per month. Two at most. It's just my opinion. Developers still do great job, really big respect for them, and I will patiently wait for Starbound and buy it at release day. Buy videos would be nice. Cheers.

The other stuff though... Well, in my opinion it's vital for the community to ask questions about ingame features! If we wouldn't do that, the forums would be a dead space! Without all these threads a lot of people could lose interest in the game's development thus not being hyped for the launch! ^_^

ya... i have noticed i got greedy about starbound info. but its cuz I want starbound to come out SO BAD!

 

i am visiting the forums and all pages every day to see updates, but i dont spam the devs to show it. im, ¨passively impatient¨ ?

 

1 thing i have noticed is that some people ( including me ) check Starbound 3 or more times a day for an update.

seriously? too little info? the devs have given us more info a month then most companies give in a year, be happy with what you can get.
I swear games like Minecraft that release as early as possible are killing the gaming community's patience.

 

Its in human nature to be greedy, im sure that almost everyone here has had some form of greed.

No way to prevent it.
Best solution is to avoid it.

I think you should re-read the posts of the users above your's because "we" never said that the devs aren't giving us enough information, "we" all just stated that it is important to ask those questions (well, except those related to a beta) and that we are, in fact, hungry for information!

Not reading most of this, we're not being greedy, the games been in development for a LONG time now, compared to other games, we have VERY little to go on, usually theres some teaser trailer or something to show some gameplay, the ones we've been shown have little to do with anything, I mean, what, we got some lighting and water physics videos? WHO CARES? IS EVERYONE SO DEPRIVED OF ANYTHING WORTHWHILE IN THEIR LIVES THAT THEY FIND THIS INTERESTING!? I mean it shows the games being worked on, (and that it isn't some joke by some obsessive maniac) which is OK, but I'm basically FORCING myself to look at these forums at this point! Because it SOUNDS like everyone's dream game! I rarely come here and find something worth my time!

Not to be redundant, but this has been bugging me for a while now, they said to get into a beta, if they have one, that you should be present here often, and be awesome and what not, WHO THE HELL worthwhile would be ACTIVE here anyway!? ITS AN OXYMORON!

I think (EVERYONE) would understand something would change by the time a game is finalized and released, I'm sure there were games I was looking forward to that changed a bit by release! This is BARELY an excuse at this point!

 

oh, other games tell us alot? hows the development of Half Life 3 coming along? so whats in the next update for TF2? whats blizzard working on for the next SC2 update? how much content is Torchlight 2 going to have? is the next Battlefield game going to have more vehicles? anything cool coming up with the Halo 4 project?

no, most companies do NOT tell us anything at all, people are spoiled because indie games releasing in early alpha to make more money and build a ton of hype.

and the info we do get is nice and interesting, I DO find lighting and water interesting, they mean a lot to me because I care about little elements of gameplay like that.

First, people asking questions is not greedy, I mean how else are you supposed to find out new things about what is going on other then Search, Ask, and Converse? Considering this is the Forums for the game, I would figure this is the best place to converse things that might or might not be in the game, and what ya think about it. I agree that the ratio of new information to people wanting information is a bit steep, I really have to ask what do you expect? People come to the Forums to discuss this topic (some even just this topic alone).. Heck there is a whole General Discussion for just these discussions

So you think there shouldn't be a localized area where all the general questions that people have ask repeatably should go.. because it annoys you to see? Given I agree that there are prob a bit of repeat questions, or maybe irrelevant questions, but I am sure that the mods can take care of that. I don't see why there is such a problem if someone is curious if the game is going to be on steam, or how modding is going to work, etc. Some are actually good questions that would take little to no time to answer. And when it comes to using the FAQ to post farm that is again something I am sure that asking questions that interest them is as much post farming as re posting a discussion because your previous one about the generally same thing was locked.

Second.. Corral means to put or keep in (usually a pen.. but that is besides the point) it does not mean that they are useless, or pointless. It means there are a lot of new questions that they prob don't want everywhere so they put them in one place. Organization is great, but it doesn't mean what you just organized is of any less worth.

Well the gameplay part.. I am not sure, but I don't think there has been any gameplay in a while. I am sure they have their reasons.. which is most likely explained to who ever asked about that. Again people are coming here for "New Information" and not getting the information that they were looking for (For one reason or another) and asking about it.. since this is a forum about the game. I would think this is pretty normal for any forum and normally would think nothing of it.

Finally I do understand, it is irritating when people don't use search, and ask things that have been asked 100 times before. Or when someone comes in sees a post from the 90's tries to bring it back.. This happens to any forum anywhere and would happen with or without a FAQ. Hating on people who are just trying to get some answers about what is going on isn't going to help anything, and without people asking questions, and talking about the game what do we have here.. Just a semi-Empty forum with people talking bout ponies (lol).

 

Never even heard of a majority of those games you mentioned Bombzero, as for Halo 4, we DO know something, the creative director left, that DOES say a lot.

the point remains, 90% of game companies tell the users nothing prior to release, at all.
the only reason you expect a non-stop flow of little details is because people are spoiled now thanks to some recent indie games.

there is a little thing called patience, we know the game will release later this year, and we know a damn lot about it already, more then most dev teams would have EVER told us. be happy.

 

I think you use these forums for the wrong reason, my friend.
These forums aren't here to feed you tons of information.
And if they just gave us a wiki with every aspect of the game, nothing would be a surprise.
The game would be boring, monotone.
And people do like water physics and lighting demos, that stuff is cool, that stuff reveals a lot.
So please just be content with what they do give us, because you are showing a display of greed right now.
