I just watched the beta trailer and have only one question. What's with the 8 bit graphics? I get it if it's a throwback to 1980s game graphic styles, but there must be a joke here I'm missing. I'm an old MOO player, and am looking for a new space 4x, so Starbound looks like a good candidate. However, I'd rather play something with graphics in the 21st century - something that pushes my crossfire GPUs on my main game deck. I normally play Alpha Centauri, Sword of the Stars, or Endless Space, but was excited to see a new space game being developed.

what you want: Big game developer games, triple A titles e.t.c.

What starbound is: Indie developer giving everyone a taste of retro gaming, bringin' back the good ol' times

You're looking at the wrong game i think?

cause ur never going to see starbound turn into crysis 3 graphics or ps4 graphics.

just not going to happen ever :/

    What he said.

Starbound's graphics are intentional; it reminds us older gamers of good fond times we had on the SNES.

And BTW, those are more like 16-bit graphics rather than 8-Bit.

I think you're in the wrong place if what you're looking for is a 4x game. Starbound is specifically a side-scrolling exploration, mining and building game... it's often called a "spiritual successor" to Terraria. Also, the graphics are like that, because stylistic choice by the developers.

In other words, your princess is in another castle.

No worries, not every game is for every person. Preparing to look elsewhere...

Yes. The graphics are real. It wouldn't make much sense if they weren't.

Besides, Starbound is following a very specific art style. It's not going to be using "21st century" triple-A 3D graphics with a smattering of Michael Bay effects. Graphics aren't the only thing that a game should be judged (or, more importantly, designed) on.

This isn't a 4X game in any way, shape or form, & the retro graphics are intentional.

I love Starbound's graphics for the same reasons I loved Terraria's.

I'm an old (well, almost 34) person who misses the "good ole days" when consoles didn't cost you an arm and a leg ($100-150 consoles?), when J-RPGs lasted you 40-50 hours on the first playthrough, when the games' development costs went more into storytelling and gameplay rather than graphics, voice-acting and FMVs.

SB and Terraria very much remind me of those old days and when I saw the graphics this game would have, I was like "this looks awesome!"

I'm very much awaiting Stardew Valley for the same reason.

People still paint in the 21st centrury how is using pixel art not allowed. Dude you are either a troll or one of those weird people with a narrow view when it comes to graphics. Reminds me of a kid who said why watch anime it's just drawings.

You sounds just like a few of my friends. Then I bought the game for them and forced them to play. They then played about 50 hours of it in a single weekend and are now hooked to it. Graphics are nice for the first impression but gameplay keeps you coming back.

Well, Anime is a whole different animal; some of it is good, some of it is simply ridiculous. But to each their own I suppose; I bet people like the OP would see a classic, like...I don't know... the original 101 Dalmatians and would think "its just drawings" ... yes, they are drawings, and the artists put a LOT of work in making that.

I don't want to be rude but, I laughed when I read 8 bit.

And besides, graphics don't make a game good. VVVVV was a blast, and that literally had solid, single color characters and levels.

Starbound is intended to look exactly how it looks. You're stuck in the mindset that all games need to have cutting edge real life graphics, which is really, really silly.

It's a very closed minded way of looking at gaming and I know tons of people who do this.

Calm down guys, he said his peace and moved on. Any negative connotation you are drawing at this point is just coming off as overly defensive.

Just look at all the people who think WoW sucks because it has "Cartoony" and "old" graphics.... yet it remains at the very top of the most-played game of all time.

If anything that is why I find wildstar intriguing. Also wow was not really "old" when it came out. Of course now it is.

Also forgot to say starbound is not 8bit it's pixel art.

Reminds me of the time I walked into a food place and found out they didn't serve pasta. The employees did not think much of my suggestion that they change the place's name to "Dunkin' Donuts (But Not Spaghetti)".

Yeah, and I like it that way, it's a big throwback to the likes of Castlevania, Metroid, and to some extent, MegaMan too!

Also, if we sprited enough, we could have recreated a modern or futuristic side-scrolling jRPG version of Valkyrie Profile!
