Are this features abandoned?

I was pointing out some facts, turns out the reason I got warned was me using "!!" at the end of a sentence instead of a "." doesn't change the facts though. All those improvements displayed before your eyes that you had to ignore to even get far enough into the video to see the bug catching feature and ignoring the fact that they just announced 100 dungeons. It must be hard to ignore all that to complain about some minor, obscure feature in your quest to deny there has been improvement in this game.....and I mean none at all according to you.

    Dear Dude / Dudette,

I did more than watch the winter update video. I played it.. Unlike some people, this update doesn't make me think "wow".. It's more of a "hmmmmm"..

Let's see if I get a warning for tying this post off with two exclamation marks!!

I've seen enough, trust me, I was happy with the last stable too, still enjoyable as well......for an early alpha it was pretty great. And I doubt you'll get warned for that because according to rules you need to direct that sentence at someone......in a way that is perceived to be mean like me pointing out facts at you that you didn't like, with exclamation marks.....which was super mean. So, I'm sorry that there so many aspects of the game that you can't use to bash ChuckleFish devs for.

Ah, but there are so many more that people can bash the devs for.
Actually, they can bash the devs for literally anything.

The fact that you are happy with the latest unstable doesn't mean everyone is. So long as you can express that you like the update, others can express displeasure with the update.
That's why it's better to understand their side of the story than to tell them they are wrong.

Exactly. I strongly suggest @DarthTrethon visits the steam forums for this game. The people there are so much more positive about the current build and the game in general.

Temperature system was nice, but hunger should be left dead forever. Its wasnt really adding to challenge, it was just pain in the ***.

So i came back after a loooooong time... and the first thing, that made me cry.

    NO HUNGER, NO TEMPERATURE
    NO AXE, NO STONE PICKAXE

I've seen the statement, that they want to remake hunger/temperature, BUT why disable it ??
It was not perfect, but at least it was something you had to care about.
Now it's just totally boring... just dig and dig deeper...

I love to use axe and pickaxes, but at the moment.... just upgrade the manipulator and everything is fine.... it should only be a starter item, which u can upgrade to gather water/oil. I dont like the Idea, that it gets so powerful that everything else just sucks...

    that's my opinion

I think its fine that the MM is a mining tool, at the end game.
in the beginning you should have to use pick axes to be able to mine effectively (its mostly like this now, but I feel its not quite right)

The hunger and temperature were really poorly done, will be reworked and put back in the game.

But for pickaxes I'm trying really hard to see the logic(or lack thereof) here....you have all this technology, a spaceship that can travel distances spawning dozens and hundreds of lightyears but you want to use a metal pick to dig ores out of the ground? Is that about right?

    cooltv27 Heliosphere

the logic only works for the beginning of the game, your ship is broken and you have next to nothing, using a pickaxe makes sense
later in the game you can make a drill with works much better then a pick
later you use the MM (I would prefer a mining laser because I have my own idea for what the MM should be)

  11. DarthTrethon

    DarthTrethon Spaceman Spiff

Not really, the spaceship my be broke but you don't mine with your ship and the matter manipulator isn't and it isn't the stone age no matter what so why would anyone in all eternity ever want a stupid pickaxe is beyond me.

Maybe having options in progression other than just character, weapons/armor, miscellaneous quests, and exploration. The way the MM is not progression, it is upgrading. Progression in the loose sense of it. But that is just my own perspective.

For early game it makes sense to myself, since the tools to upgrade the MM are not fully functional; it is not like the knowledge of the inner workings are grafted to the mind of the player's character; although we could imagine or form that idea, since full background is left to the player to generate. So on that note for me at least having something temporary till said equipment is ready to be used would be the idea behind it in early game (being stranded on the first planet), mainly as an alternative with a specific purpose. The MM is multipurpose, but it isn't fully upgraded in that stage of the game either.

So having something that is simple to make off hand from scratch is like baking a cake. Do you use cake mix or have all the ingredients separate to mix yourself from step to step. Well it is one way to look at it, and I know it might not make sense, but it is the way I think to an extent. Some people just prefer going to the fundamentals first in order to get the advanced stuff latter that would effectively shortcut things a bit further on down the line.

Whether understood or not, I can also see why people prefer the MM as well. There are many different views on the matter with each their own perspective, even if they do or don't see eye to eye. :)

    EDIT: So basically variety.

there is nothing saying that the MM on your ship when you start is very high tier (though your ship being broken is the only thing to suggest that its low tier)
maybe the MM is broken and you need some basic materials to make sure it works correctly

the only arguement for the MM being the early game tool is "its a sci-fi game and you have incredible technology, why would you use a pick?"
    1. maybe people wernt able to develop the tech to make the MM better then a pick (flawed logic with the current state of the MM upgrades)
    2. maybe you were not able to obtain a powerful MM because the tech was to new and therefore to expensive for you
    3. (human specific) what are the odds that a random spaceship that some random person took when earth was destroyed would have a very powerful MM (im going to assume that ALL ships had at least a BASIC MM)

Also: Who says, that the MM should be the best tool for mining? Because its a future technology? That doesnt mean it should be superior. So it can mine everything, BUT the laser needs its time to melt the stone or whatever. So the pickaxe could be superior.
But well.... you can argue a lot about it... it depends on the preference of the players...

One thing i dont like about the MM, you don't need to maintain it. Like drills / pickaxes, so at the end you don't need to care about your equipment, because you'll never lose it! NEVER!
I really like to maintain my character, but at the moment.... yea.. boring... i still like the game, but it has taken a huge hit, for me at least.

I love to maintain my character, build new equipment, repair equipment, craft food / eat, care about shelter etc. etc.
i like to play "immersive", so that it makes sense in the games universe, which brings the question up: CAN a MM have unlimted energy or why does it not use the player energy, like weapons do? Which could be again a thing. A MM is powerful, but uses energy of the player, which slows the farming down / down times. A pickaxe has no down time, but it can break.

While you struggle to see the logic (or lack thereof) in the need of pickaxes I struggle to see the logic (or lack thereof) of 2 things: a) Why does a person demand coffee in spaceage? Dont they have plantages on their spacestation... or replicators... or the knowledge to use a wooden stick to stirr the coffee? No it must be made out of steel. b) Why the heck is steel made with oil? Literally no other game has this. Its weird and feels extremly off... Just name it something else then but not name whatever that "alloy" should be steel...

Now it doesnt matter what others are telling though since the standard answer will be: "They are just placeholders.". Wish I would have the freedom to tell people that everything I do are placeholders and they have no right to criticise it...

That's been my issue as well, that the new recipes for "steel" and other alloys make no sense at all, outside of progression/difficulty reasoning. If they wanted to add a new material instead of coal to alloy with iron to make steel they could have done manganese, or something along the lines of HIsarna steelmaking, which would probably fit Starbound's sci-fi atmosphere best. Although, oil+iron=steel is much more reasonable than alloying titanium with uranium to make durasteel... Titanium alloyed with depleted uranium produces an alloy called "Staballoy" that's used in armour-piercing munitions, and is carcinogenic to humans; it's very strong & dense but not exactly safe to wear armour made of/plated with it. A better recipe for durasteel would be titanium + steel, or even just the old recipe of titanium + coal.

then what's the point of all those food drops and recipes?

We plan to remedy this in a number of different ways. Firstly, we’re going to add a planet bookmark/teleportation system. This will allow you to get directly from your ship to a base you’ve set up on a planet instantly and without travelling to that planet first.
    Isn't that what 'home' does?

No one ever talks about how bland the vehicles are and I have to admit that was the big thing that drew me into the game and it's very upsetting that vehicles are little more than 'mounts'.
