Are this features abandoned?

    Hello,

I'm following Starbound for few years now and i see that many features changed since then. I'm wondering if they are abandoned - hope not.
First of all - status system. When i backed this project it was said that status system will be complex. Even in early beta there was really nice build in temperature system. But with time it changed much. It's much more simple. Here is example what it should be (from early concept - that's one of the main features that took my attention, so i think it's important):

Second one - different crafting for each race. Can't find any info that was said before release about it right now, but i found that: http://starbounder.org/Races
It was said that every race will have different crafting, but everyone will be able to learn recipes for other races stuff on higher levels. Also as it's said on the link that i posted "Races also have separate armor tiers. Their armor not only looks different, but has different passive abilities. For example, a full set of Avian armor allows the wearer to glide." What happened with that? I'm waiting when choosing race will have after-effects like different building blocks style etc.

So - is it all abandoned? Will we be able to see that all features in the game? And WHY did devs give up with old temperature system? (the simple thing to solve problem with stats + heat problem would be adding some kind of upgrades for armor that can increase for example cold resistance without changing other stats and look of armor that you have.)

    With regards
    Ted

As for temperature system, they might be considering adding it as an option. The racial armor effects are still being worked on.

I didn't really like the older temperature system because it only accounted for warmth - it wasn't built to handle overheat, so you could head to a desert planet wearing bulky winter clothes and you'd be fine.

But yeah, it'd be kinda neat if you'd have to wear clothes according to the planet's hazard. Although the thing setting me off is that you have to sacrifice your bulky armour for that.

hope they will build more complex stat system. At the beggining it looked much more interesting than last few attempts :(
and btw. The old stat system was great if they would add few items that would control temperature (fans, heaters, coolers etc). Additionally (as you said L. F. Oxidizer) effects of overheating.

The mockup is exactly the type of game I wanted.
Over the span of time they seem to be dumbing down the difficulty significantly and just threw out their core design book.

You should tweet that image to Tiy or SB account with the caption - "What happened?"

I think -EVERYONE- was drawn in by those promises. I mean, they're teaser images.

Right now, it's more of a teaser horse; show something refined and elegant, but give something rough.

That is not how you use the word "forbidden".
"Forbidden" is a word used to describe an item or situation that is not allowed to do due to lawful/moral restrictions.

I think you are looking for the term "discontinued".
"Discontinue" is a term used when a planned item or event is no longer being worked on due to constraints or lack of interest of some kind.

The original implementation of the status system always seemed like a way to bar progress. Until you getting better warmth generation you can't explore underwater on this icy ocean planet. Until you get your hazmat suit you can't mine uranium without getting cancer. That kind of thing still exists, but it has largely been removed from the user's hands, which makes it feel very different. You can't go to cold planets until you unlock the cold protection tech and lock it in. Very different than having to put on a cold suit and place fires or space heaters or whatever. It just feels totally different; also it's a lot easier for them to implement.

I'd just love to see something more interesting than "You rapidly lose health and then die when the bar reaches 0." It should implement varying status effects as the environmental hazard effects you more and more. For example:

    Cold -
L1 - Shaky - Reduced aim (if that were a thing). Slide around on the ground (because that's fun).
L2 - Freezing - Slower attack animations and run speed. Screen starting to get hazy.
L3 - Fading out - All of screen except for small circle around you goes dark. Moderately fast lose health and then die.

    Hunger -
L1 - Famished - Weaker hits with melee weapons. Energy bar takes longer to recharge.
L2 - Starving - Reduced run speed and jump height.
L3 - Dying - Moderately fast health loss and energy bar stops recharging entirely. Then death.

    Radiation -
L1 - Poisoned - Long term very slow health drain debuff. Like for 5 minutes.
L2 - Energy bar drains to zero. Suit techs no longer function. Moderately slow health drain debuff stacks on top of first one.
L3 - Something else radiation-y. Maybe cannot attack at all. Moderately fast health drain. Then death.

    Heat -
L1 - Since there is no dehydration bar, substitute hunger bar drains faster. Slower move speed.
L2 - Slow health drain. On fire debuff. ?
L3 - Fast health drain. Then death.

    Air -
    L1 - L2 - ?
L3 - Screen goes dark (like with cold). Health loss and death.

Oh, whatever. I was running out of ideas for this brief example. Obviously exposure to more dangerous areas (higher levels of radiation, colder environment) would make the stages progress faster. At lower levels of exposure it might take as much as 3 minutes of exposure to cold, hunger, radiation, or heat to reach L3 and die. At high levels (including air loss) it would take something lke 20-30 seconds.

I thought this thread had some fun ideas for similarly more interesting ways to block progression. http://community.playstarbound.com/...ex-requirements-for-planet-exploration.88795/

The funny thing is that using the new MM I'd just carry lava around.

I don't think Hunger should ever make a return.

If temperature makes a return, then the starting planets should be all fine and the racial armours should not be able to prevent extreme temperature very well. And all fire damage should be substituted for increased heat, and heat deals damage.

I'm sorry, you are right. I used wrong word. I was trying to say forgotten much more than forgiven. Or even abandoned would be better.

It was much more interesting when it was getting colder when you were on the icy surface not covered from wind, when you could survive on cold by starting a fire etc. Now it's just something like: you will unlock these planets by defeating this mission. Where are these survive elements?

Well I hope that it isn't as stupid as it used to be.

No, it was annoying. All it did was make the early game more difficult than the late game, which was one of the main issues with Starbound (the other issue was Hunger, for the same reason). A game should start out easy and get harder, not the other way around.

Yeah, it was much more interesting than having one item to rule them all. To me, things started to go downhill since Devs decided to refocus gameplay. I could only speak for myself, but when i decided to support SB my impression was it going to be focused on exploring, survival, NPC-interaction (in form of NPC crews, NPC doing task fot you, etc.), in-depth crafting and resources systems, and elements like combat and quests would be secondary. But right now game have heavy focus on quests - like quests are mandatory, and quests are driving exploration and not otherwise and combat - which, IMHO, couldn't be very good in a game with random weapons and mobs. Survival is lacking, exploring is dull, NPCs are in progress, and current crafting and resource systems are too general - there is nothing in them that other similar game don't have.

Original system was only a placeholder (like almost everything else), a sketch for further systems. So was it was almost fully deleted and not reworked as other systems? And no-one forced you to visit planet with harsh conditions before you can afford it - where were literally nothing aside looks that differentiate them from non-harmful ones.

A year ago, person with nickname Madzai raised concerns about CF added tag "Casual" to Starbound in Steam (do not confuse it with user-added tags, please). He was laughed at.... "It means nothing" they said.... Enjoy your game for 5 y.o. now....

while I agree with this statement, I also think that the challenges you face at the beginning and end should be different
when you start, your ship is broken around some random planet and you have next to nothing. food and temperature should be a concern, and (for balance reasons) the enemies can only kill you if you let them
at then end when you have armor that protects from basic temperature dangers (not extreme like they used to) and the nano suits (with changes) to protect from the extreme ones, enemies are the danger. you have to be paying attention and killing them to survive
