Are mechs/vehicles in the beta?

I haven't been following the forums recently, which is where most of the good information is since people discuss livestreams etc.

But I was wondering if there are any mechs or vehicles in the beginning 3 tiers, which I believe are the finished tiers that will be in the beta.

There was a screenshot very recently showing one, so they may well be.

it may... I highly doubt it though as the devs have said multiple times that it will only be low tiers... until the middle or end of beta where they said you can see end tier items

    I can't wait to drive that ;)

Though I'm guessing it wont be in the first 3 tiers.

Does anyone know the first 3? I'm guessing wood, copper, iron.

I'd lean on no since they've been shown so precious little. Or, rather, I don't think they'll be in initially but this is just a hunch based off what I've seen. Unless Molly or another dev outright says it, I guess we'll never know till beta.

  8. It's very unknown still, but as you follow and unlock new tiers it's supposed to unlock new stuff, as when you start the game you can't travel to advanced planets, only after get the beacon working and defeat the first boss.
    It's one interesting system.

Mechs at the start would be kill, all hardcore, no challenge, eh!

  9. The mechs look fun but they are always on relatively flat surfaces, I wonder what it will looks like when it's walking on more jagged terrain.

It'll probably look something like this...

Oh man, I saw the preview still of the video, recognized it without playing the video, and had a great laugh. Thanks for that!

On another note, why the heck do machines in movies often make pig squeals or demonic shrieks when they get stuck. Terminator 2 and 3 are other examples, both at or near the end.

I don't think the answer is yes or no. I think they'll probably be missing early on in the beta. Particularly during Phase 1. But there's no way to know for sure. They may very well be in the game, but require some work to be finalized.

They also said that end game content will be available at the beginning, so if you didn't want spoilers to not play the beta.

I'm really not sure but that picture Tiy posted on his Twitter showing the mech has my hopes up we will just have to see

Mechs should be fine traversing blocks up to around 3-4 tiles high. That's why they are mechs and not cars. They have legs, not wheels.

I'm also fine with them not being able to scale really rough terrain. If they could, they would be overpowered as you could just go everywhere in a mech and blast enemies. Or in turn the enemies would have to be buffed to resist a mech, in which case you wouldn't be able to go anywhere without one which would suck too. Or finally mechs would be made as weak as not being in one, which also makes them pointless.

Mechs should offer a tradeoff. They should be very powerful in some circumstances, and very weak in others. This way the game remains balanced and you can choose the right tool for the task, with every tool and strategy being useful in some context.

That being said, I would welcome some kind of "light" mechs that can jump and not just walk, like a grasshopper or leaper concept. Obviously they would have less armor and weaker guns than "heavy" mechs, but could still offer marginally better protection than not being in a mech at all. Or perhaps a very light mech that can hop very far and fast (further and faster than on foot), great for leaping to strategic positions from where you can snipe enemies, and leap again to dodge damage. Of course such mechs should be very light and weakly armored, and still have some drawback compared to not being in a mech (such as inability to use your main items while in one), so balance is once again maintained.

Better to have many different mechs, light and heavy, each with unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, than a single 'do it all' mech.

I would actually love to see different mechs too. I think a system to customize parts and outfit with them with weapons that are similarly dropped or work similarly to player weapons maybe. Having the ability to outfit a cannon or sword onto a mech would be cool. Maybe have it so you have a whole UI where you can change the mechs interiors like armor and such, putting heavier stronger armor on to make it slower and be able to take more hits or outfit it with a lighter armor so it can go faster but is less durable. Having different systems possible like jump jets or such would let you be more mobile but very vulnerable in the mech.

You could have it almost as a entirely different way to perform takes that players normally would. A similar idea to having a beefy set of armor for a melee character and a weaker set with more range bonuses for someone who uses ranged weaponry? Having the option of building and using a Heavily armored mech to take hits and defend friends or a agile ranged mech that can quickly move and dodge. Being able to make or find parts to customize a mech to such purposes.

I might just have a mech obsession and want too indepth of a system for a more minor side thing. :p
