I don't understand why they couldn't have just added a bookmark for your home planet when transitioning. That should have been trivial and saved a lot of people a lot of grief.
You think it "should have been trivial" only due to assumptions you've made about the code and any changes. Without seeing the code, no one can say that for sure. Not to mention: A: It's a beta B: There was ample warning for people to get ready for the Unstable push to Stable C: You can still find it on your own by simply looking at your world files and exploring a bit D : It's a beta I'm not sure why people seem to ignore the fact that the game is in beta. There's absolutely no requirement or obligation for them to preserve saves, make version transitions simple for modders and players, help people with learning the modding API, or any number of things people seem to expect. Yet they still take the time (within feasible limits) to help make things easier in these areas. You always have the option, due to the game not using any DRM, of copying out the Starbound folder any time you want to "freeze" the current state of the game and using that until you decide to update.
I wouldn't call it nitpicking because it's exactly what I just thought although I know this handy trick. It is just a stupid little typo but if someone doesn't know, s/he might think the coordinates have to be inverted or something strange... Because since when has anything to do with computers ever been easy? Damn things have a mind of their own.
Hmm, actually, thinking about this, as game totally knows home planet location all this time (and gives it to all newly generated characters), there are the reasons to expect that developers can easily map it during transition, or any time after that, like, right now... no? (Hmm, worth to ask developers directly... where is this suggestions forum? While I totally agree with A and D, and C seems quite viable (but still not guaranteed) solution, I cannot exactly get your B point. I am playing Starbound on Steam. And while I have Steam active 16x7 (even 24x7 sometimes), I am playing Starbound only at weekends. Sometimes. So for me it means that game almost surely will be updated before I'll see any warning about it (actually, this last time I got update, then went to blog to see changelog.) How exactly can I prevent home planet loss in that case?
The first warning -- exactly the same as this update's -- was given April 2nd for an unstable update. Apparently, multiple people did not realize this would eventually trickle down to a later stable and write it down or bookmarkify it in advance. And if you didn't see the warning back then in the first place... *shrug*
well, here every planet seems to be new or reborn, didn't see any sign that i was there in none of them
you mean why the starter homeworld not bookmarked by default? if so, you have to consider the "starter world" is a make believe, we re simply randomly placed on the defaulted lush biome, you cant bookmark randomness. If we were to have a starter world like the outpost (but being a world based outpost/character hub) then yes, bookmarking the home world would completely make sense.
This reminds me of the days I used to archive people's worlds on a server I admined. I'm glad many are finally getting educated on how to find their worlds.
Are savefiles eventually going to have their own save folder, be organized very nicely and will it be easy for us to view the data so we could potentially edit it with third party software. Someway like Minecraft does it, with NBT-edit. Also, how hard would it have been to just make the home planet automatically be converted to the first bookmark, called home? Anyway, I love this game, keep up the good work and I hope that our saves won't corrupt too much
What is a "savefile" in the context of SB anyway? Not a thing, it's a bunch of files together. They're organized to a degree, and a good amount of them are editable: .player and .metadata files in /player, .clientcontext and universe.dat in /universe... It's the .world and .shipworld files, and universe.chunks that AFAIK we can't easily edit, yet.
found another way to locate my home planet: I happened to make the starter world in my universe be the home planet, and the same is true for me on my friends server. there is a possibility that the same is true for many other people. for singleplayer or your own server's universe, if you have set the starter world as your home, make sure singleplayer is not running, launch the server and look for these lines: X: 85228237 Y -97618793 if you play on a friend's server, you can get their help since they have access to the server's console. it's also possible to find the starter world by joining with a different character: make a new character and unlock the ship's pilot seat (20 core fragments). join with an existing character that's never been on the server before or has never left the starter world then hop in the pilot seat and see the world's coordinates.
So I kinda figured out a while back that the last, fourth number, which is always single or double digit, seems to refer to which planet it is in that galaxy, although I haven't figured out a concrete way of determining HOW to count to the right planet yet. But what does the third number mean?
Of course, I seen it. But... 1. I still hoped that this "no-bookmark" update will be reserved for the unstable. It's experimental, yes? Unlike main one?.., 2. There was quite indefinite time between unstable and stable updates in the past, and yes, 3. I didn't enter Starbound all this time anyway. So... it was quite a surprise for me in the end. I found my needed planet (it was one of two most recent ones, actually. , but I still think that developers could put this first bookmark here.
hi i try the cords to find my home but they did not work so i have lost my home and stuff is there a way to get round this at ty for reading this
Right click -> sort files by date last modified. If your planet’s been heavily customized/built upon, it should be one of the larger files. If you visit it frequently, it should also be one of the most recent. Dont right click and sort by last modified! Your home planet is the first planet that you were on so sort by date created, and your home planet will be the first one listed...
Also -- for anyone who has "lost their save" due to crash or whatnot BUT you had bookmarks / teleporters: Find the install folder: [install path]\Starbound\giraffe_storage\player\ -- you might want to make backups of these before you open them Open your <long alpha numeric>.player file (preferrably in notpad++) and look for PlanetName -- there will be lines for your bookmarks / teleporters... The coordinates to paste into your ship are (currently) in this position, Example (you'll see special characters, i typed in ellipses): planetName! ... Epsilon HR 8799 Peg Majoris III b ... name ... Farm Home Alpha ... type ... teleportspawn ... Target ... 89bded2d8cfdcd7596d9b4604a03743d ... targetWorld ... 0CelestialWorld ... 527306703:-225313224:-242147747:8 ... icon ... desert The quick and dirty of it is paste these numbers: X = 527306703 and Y = -225313224 I haven't looked hard but honetly I've never seen this info in response to people who have asked about their "lost teleporters" or what have you.
