Apex ships should be less futuristic, more retro. (Please read, especially devs!)

As the title says, I think the Apex ships should be less futuristic looking and more retro. Simply put, the Apex aesthetic is NOT "sleek and high tech". Go visit an Apex settlement on any planet and you get a drab, brick-and-concrete, 1930's feel. Only the Apex secret science labs have the sleek and futuristic stuff, and honestly I don't like that either.

I would love to see those Apple iLabs replaced by more fitting retro science labs, full of tesla coils and jacob's ladders like something out of Bride of Frankenstein. (they've already got brains in jars, so why not?) And maybe we could make their ships something more like... this!

Alternately, we could make the Apex the steampunk race. I would LOVE a steampunk race in this game, and the Apex are already like 75% of the way there. We could fill their laboratories and spaceships with brass and steam pipes and boilers!

 

Remember that the Apex are divided; Miniknog and regular Apex. The regular Apex are kept from the technologically impressive stuff because OPPRESSION. If you read the starter codex documents for the Apex, you'll find out the ship was a Miniknog ship originally.

 

Not quite. You're not riding in a civilian ship. The Apex story is you've stolen a Miniknog ship, which is very "sleek and futuristic". Go look at their science facilities and "Thought Reassignment" facilities. I'm not even sure the civilians are allowed space travel, so it makes sense. As for the Steampunk idea, I think it would require a new race entirely, and I think the Novakid will probably be closer.

Changing the aesthetic of Miniknog would require too much lore change. I like my oppressed monkeys.

 

That's true, but I would still like to see them have a more retro look. I really think this game NEEDS at least one race to have such a look. Currently there's none. Every race's aesthetic is either "super ancient" (avian, floran, glitch), "sleek and high tech" (human, apex), or "fish" (hylotl).

 

I don't know if I'd consider the Hylotl high-tech looking. Their ships are very ornamental to me, which fits more with the "super ancient" idea. Floran ships certainly don't look ancient, as they're converted Apex ships.

 

I tell you what they need to be, they need to be more Neanderthals like.

 

Also, I imagine the Novakids riding around in steam-powered space-locomotives. Please tell me they get space-trains!

 

For some reason, I remember seeing Novakids dressed like cowboys somewhere. So that might be a possibility.

Doc Brown's final, funky train time machine in Back to the Future III comes to mind as well.

Ya. Civilian apex have a retro look, all the Miniknog stuff (like your ship) is sleek and shiny. As for the Novakids, western+steampunk would be pretty awesome.

Well, I still think it would be good. You could make their technology look more retro without changing their lore. Simply put, the Miniknog are still the only ones with access to high technology. They're the ones with computers and laboratories and other crazy things, but instead of that technology looking like something made by Apple, it looks more like Edison - tesla coils, vacuum tubes, and crackling wires, rather than sleek white cabinets and flat screen monitors.

I get that the massive aesthetic difference is used to emphasize the difference in tech level between regular Apex and Miniknog, but I don't think you need to go that far to accomplish that goal. Also, as mentioned, I REALLY think this game NEEDS at least one race with a retro aesthetic. Currently it has none.

 

Apex are evolved humans. Their tech aesthetic is fine.

 

you do understand the Apex are 1984 meets Planet of the Apes. directly. their art and science design reflecting that time period sci fi aesthetic makes alot of sense.

 

Floran ships are Apex ships covered in vines and such. So they're pretty high-tech.

 

I think your wish will come true when the Novakids are implemented. They are sort of a wild wild west meets gaspunk idea. It says in the lore that because of their wickedly short attention spans, the technological research is limited. So...ok your wish isn't going to come true.

I think you're right, there is sort of a gap there. The Glitch race seems most ready to have steampunk assets tacked on to it.

And don't forget, lore permitting, the developers may want to design different technological ages of races.

I see where you are going with this and I also kinda understand why but I really like the apex ship the way it is so its gonna be a no from me. :-(

Yeah, I guess it's pretty obvious from the poll what the majority opinion is. I guess the Miniknog tech doesn't look THAT bad, but still.

Well, maybe we'll get a nice retro aesthetic put onto a future race. That'd be cool.
