Quad core 2.3ghz, 4 gigs of ram, and a 512mb video card should be ok as of now, right?

The game has not been really optimized so unless you got a super charged alienware or something then you'll have some FPS drops. But for you, you will probably have a tough time playing with that video card.

Also you could goto this nifty website that can tell you if it'll run or not without all the guessing.

I'm asking for a buddy, I'm assuming my machine will be ok. I'm running an i7 2.67ghz with 6 gigs of ram and a GTS450 1gig

Based on that website a core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram and a 256mb video card should run it... He should be fine.

Just another chime in to add to the range of machines, but I'm on a now dated system running on a 3.1GHz AMD dual-core, 4GB RAM, and a Geforce 9800 GTX+ (512MB ) at 1400x900 resolution. It runs fine for me. Granted there are some very occasional instances where FPS will drop a little as something loads while exploring, but it is quite uncommon. Also, as was said, the game has yet to be optimized. Otherwise, it runs very smoothly for me. The only real visual lag I get is while beaming down to a planet, but exploring, mining, chopping trees, combat, etc. is generally quite smooth.

That is good news. I don't want my buddy to get discouraged before final release and not play ever again (getting him Starbound for christmas). Your system seems to be very similar, and he's used to fps drops when things get intense, so it should be fine for now, and great upon retail release

Yeah, should be fine for now if his system is similar to mine. Very NPC-heavy areas might see some FPS drop (villages, airships, or glitch castles), but it should still be pretty much playable, and I haven't had much problem myself. Despite occasional bugs (it is beta after all) it's been an enjoyable experience for me so far.
