Anyone feel like spaceships kind of kill the importance of houses?

Maybe not spaceships alone, but with there being hundreds of single-biome planes homes don't seem as important as they did in Terraria :l Most of the times I'll end up building a decent house, getting bored of the planet (due to it looking the same everywhere) and moving somewhere else and eventually I end up never going back.

That's why you build in your ship.

Nah, I got a small beta forest planet with my house I fly back to every now and then, and my ship is decked out in awesome Floran design stuff. Why not have both?

Yes, but the solution isn't to nerf spaceships. We need a private place to store our items, and we also need somewhere people can teleport to when joining us.

The solution rather is to make colonization more rewarding.

The ship is far too constrained. If I want to build a house with a hundred chests to store my collection I can. In the ship? Not so much.

And don't anyone start with any nonsense about having to make trade offs in what you keep. That would be perhaps the stupidest thing ever.

Oh and good luck farming on your ship.

I think it depends on your play style.
Me for instance: I am going to primarily use my ship until pretty much end game.

Then I will build an epic house :)

And travel less annoying (animation), and less expensive (600+ fuel round trip to make pit stops).

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Being in space is depressing anyway. No music, no wildlife, can't expand it and there isn't much room for decorations.

This - Once we unlock larger ships, they will basically serve as your home. The planets will become a sort of base camp with basic protection from the elements and animals - and crafting stations. You'll most likely tear it down and rebuild it somewhere else once you leave a planet for good.

Unless of course you insist on having a planet home - Enjoy the gas bill.

It's incredibly easy to farm on your ship, most people do it.

I agree that the solution isn't to nerf the ship, but to buff colonization incentive. Right now the /only/ reason to ever build any sort of construction on a planet is because of personal playstyle. There is no productive reason too really.

    I must try this.

I came here to say this.

The solution isn't to make flying around on a ship worthless or uninteresting. The solution is to let people who want to fly around as space locusts do so, and let people who want to build a settlement do so. I'd suggest having some very basic colonization mechanics- farms that continue to grow while you're away, NPC merchants that come and live in some rooms, maybe some sort of monster attack that drops neat loot, like the Goblin and Pirate invasions in Terraria. More interesting subterranean dungeons? Being able to change your spawn location, maybe?

I'm spitballing here. Somebody more creative must have a better idea than me, but the point is: there needs to be a real reason to build, not just "you need more space for forges/storage."

if they implement random missions/quests building up a town and creating the NPC's might be a big reason to craft a town on a planet.

The main problem is that planets get boring fast. Every planet being single-biome is a really, really terrible idea. I hope they change that by the time they're finished with the game.

Just out of curiosity, which biome wold be the best for me to colonize as to having the best ore mining concentration?

Probably desert, as you can just mine the sand and knock all the ores loose.

This may seem off-topic but what's the real point of farming when it's ridiculously easy to fill the hunger bar (via collect fruits off the surface of the planet or simply dying) and health can easily be regained by making a bundle of band-aids?

The ship is nice, but it has nowhere near the amount of space if you want to build something and have some form of HQ lab. Personally when starting I keep the same homeworld, make it look nice, and then come back every so often and pretty it up with new things. It costs less fuel to do everything from your ship, but it's nice to have a home to come back to every so often.

Your mileage may vary, though I agree there isn't much incentive to have a base in one place at the moment. I've heard rumors of your homeworld of choice becoming an important hub and meaning something, but none of that is there now. Your ship should be more of a smaller mobile base while your chosen home planet can be spruced up and look nice.

They all have the same ore cluster and generation at the moment.

There's code to change it up, but it's not implemented yet. So for now, just pick whatever one you think is the prettiest.

The ship is meant to be for effectiveness. You can build a fashionable home, to store your precious items, on a planet of your choosing. The chances of someone else landing on that planet, is literally 1/1 trillion or so.
You can enjoy multiple homes away from the ship if you write the coords down. It's really simple. No need to nerf the ships. They're too cramped to matter much.
