Not pets. Sentient beings who you could recruit and equip. Maybe even have certain planets where you could be friends with (or enslave) the races on that planet. And persuade or force them to fight along side you while you explore planets. Maybe even be able to geneticly modify them to be super powered or so they can breathe underwater.

I guess I'm a bit late. Also, on topic, the whole gist of this idea looks like it will fit hand in hand with the whole race system, so I'm gonna go ahead and say yes.
I believe they are already confirmed. I can't recall where it was said though, but I'm hoping for some super horse/moose/mongoose combination. Edit: Here it is from Blue's Collection of Info: -Creatures can be caught and trained to help you fight. These creatures will have stats such as defense, attack damage, speed, which will increase will kills. They can also be trained to fly or swim, etc. This will be able to be done when the creature is at low health.

I would love to be able to recruit an army a la Mount and Blade and then be able to lay siege to enemy/rogue planets and fortresses
It would be nice to have a sentient Penguin following you around on a leash. First penguin in spaaace!
