Anyone Else Hate the Floran's Personality?

The Floran are to Starbound as Orks are to Warhammer 40k. Before anyone jumps down my throat about the different levels in violent tendencies, know that SOME clans of Orks do trade with humans. Most of their tech is pilfered, salvaged, or make shift. Some honest to goodness trading with human colonies works for stockpiling the armory in preparation for the next WAAAAUGH! Florans are more interested in a hunt than in uninhibited bloodshed.

Florans and Hylotl probably don't get along so well simply because first contact was on the Hylotl home world and obviously it wasn't a very pleasant interaction. The Florans may have won probably because killing them, like Orks, may only accomplish producing more of those barbaric morons.

Normally I'd disagree since it just feels like they have a speech impediment, but after some of the stuff they've said, like 'butttonnnz' I'm starting to get the feeling they're just idiots who managed to get their hands on starship tech kind of like those guys on star trek 'we are strong' .

 

The Floran are a tribal culture that can communicate with plant-life. What you were expecting isn't too far off base.

Moronic? Okay, now you are way off. The Floran are primitive and rather barbaric, granted, but in no way can they possibly be considered moronic when you take everything into account. The Floran have a very bare-bones language, which can give the impression that they are less intelligent than they actually are, but this is more likely down to the fact that Floran are a young race, their language hasn't had as long as the other races to develop. Yet despite their young age, Floran are capable of reverse engineering and repairing FTL technology. Hardly a feat one would associate with being "Moronic".

 

I think the personality fits. What you described seems like it would be kinda cliche for a plant race. However, plants who are barbaric, violent, and carnivorous is a bit more unique and interesting, IMO. Also races that are less intelligent would most likely be more violent and barbaric, and plants don't strike me as something that would be very intelligent.
However I do hate their problem with the letter S. It fits with snakes, but I don't think it makes any sense with a plant. Even worse is when people RP as Florans and talk/type like that (no offense to Floran RPers).

Personally I like the Floran's personality. Want a spiritual race? Play the avians. Or like just about everyone else is doing with their character... ROLEPLAY. Make up your own character's history and personality.

Mine eats everyone it comes across unless it finds them appealing.

 

How can anything really have a personality at this stage? It's like claiming one of your GI Joes has a personality; they only have what personality you create them to have.

 

I personally find the Florans to be fairly adorable. Especially when they say they want to cuddle me silly. This isn't violent or barbaric, this is... Well, I don't know, it almost sounded like innuendo or something. >.>

 

Damn. Some of the fancy talk here are enough to make one go cross-eyed. At least it shows that people care. Sometimes i think they might care a bit too much... BUT! ... it is still.. c-caring. Yes.

Anyway, i like the Florans. Very charming people. If i would want any improvement on them.. it would be just to expand what is already there. No need to change them.

 

I think it makes alot of sense. If you can make the rest of the universe fertilizer, you would love to be a Floran too. Personally, I'm terrified of the concept. It would be like giving sharks cybernetic enhancements to traverse land and process more than "eat, f*ck, rest in motion"

 

It is however what I would associate with bad writing.

 

Since Hylotls are are my pick I dislike the Florans because they are so cruel to the Hylotls

 

So which one's the reason, the way they speak or the fact that they're barbarians? I don't understand the post.

Still, this is exactly the good thing about Starbound races: they all subvert your expectations in some way. Of course tribal plant people would turn out to be all peaceful and spiritual, we expect that. Boring!

Still, I can understand that you don't like it: pick another race that suits your tastes!

 

I will agree that I feel there is a great risk of this, I'm hoping whoever is working on the lore will manage spin the background of the Floran into something that makes a little more sense. Until the story starts unraveling itself though(assuming there is some plan to the lore), it's hard to say with absolute certainty. But also take in mind that given the early stage of the game, even the story can be subject to change.

All in all though, I do think the Floran have potential, it just falls on the execution.

 

There are also text in the game that imply floran are capable of straight up reading binary machine code.

Dig a little deeper into the lore. The reason floran are so invasive and frightening isn't because they are dumb orks, it's because they're frighteningly intelligent but terrible at self control. They're basically genius children who never grow up in terms of maturity beyond the first few years of development. There's also a bit of a conspiracy amongst the ruling body of the Floran (the elders and Greenfinger in particular) to keep the vox populi of the floran ill educated, though this seems to be out of a desire to protect them rather than to exploit them. Floran as a whole with the ability to easily produce more modern weapons is as much a recipe for disaster for the floran as it is the rest of the galaxy.

 

So you keep saying but you haven't really explained how it's bad writing.

 

Personally I find the Floran disposition quite refreshing.
When I first learned about them before any of the lore had been established I thought "oh look another wise race of plant creatures that are perfectly in tune with nature and stuff"
But no they aren't like Ents, Dryads or Sylvari or the vast majority of intelligent plant races. They are barbarian dudes who like to wreck shit and eat flesh. I was positively surprised and I think it's a good divergence from the stereotype.

 

I actually play as a floran because I find their personalities funny. My only disappointment with the race is the spaceship. I know it's stolen, but I wish it looked more run-down and floran-y.

 

lets not kid ourselves, Florans clearly have lesser intelligence, they are a rather young race, apparently engineered as simple and violent creatures. The items they have display them as a primitive culture.
