I really don't like playing as the Florans for one reason: Their personalities. I was expecting a tribal race with a spiritual connection to the earth but was disappointed when it turns out they're just a race of moronic barbarians. I don't mind them being primitive or anything but how they speak just really bugs me.

  2. I never thought of them as moronic. I always thought of them as simply non-articulate in language. Why speak when you can sssstab.

Yes I am sure there are people that do, don't or don't care.

The way you know something is done well - is when it results in an emotional response from the end user.
In other words - mission accomplished.

Yeaaah no you're not gonna use wordplays and misappropriation as an excuse.

Starbound's writing elicits an emotion because it is completely underpar for a game of this caliber. The writing, quite frankly, stinks. It's horribly disappointing.

Hate Florans' personality? Florans HAVE no personality.

Kind of think that's a bit of a generalisation.
Most Florans I meet have the same level of responses as the other races. Some what aloof in ways but far from moronic.

We don't have to follow the base lore of the characters. Floran players for example aren't restricted to being dumb barbarians, they can become what ever they like and one of the smartest scientists in the game is a Floran.
CF gave us some history so that we have a past but we make the future for our characters.

As a Hylotl I refuse the life of a missionary trying to force beliefs on others and I don't really have much hate for the Floran either. I am sure my peoples had role to play in the whole war thing as well.

Shit, don't sugar coat it or anything....
We don't even have the story in game yet, just overviews and place holders

  8. The fact that a plant/nature race are barbaric and carnivorous is the Florans' ironic touch. Just like the historic robots, flightless birds, and authoritarian apes.

"Ironic" is neither an excuse nor a synonym for "clashing and badly thought-out". To do the exact opposite of what you think is expected is not creative; it's predictable and every bit as cliche as what you're spiting.

Actions speak louder than words, one of the few wise florin words.

  11. I guess the developers should get better writers, then? I don't know what you want me to tell you.

They might pick up the pace once the game direction is finalized, but quite honestly I don't see why they didn't have the Floran's story mostly ready before they wrote a line of code. Floran are the cornerstone of the game setting. Every single other race is affected by their conquests and a good reason why they behave the way they do would be great.

Hell, do you want me to write it instead?! All I have to do is dump the assets, run through the codex files to figure out some names, and the rest will be history.

I'm sorry that I'm so pissed off but nightly is currently dumping everyone into the same hard-as-balls dungeon (hint: dig the left wall and make stepping stones to climb out) so I'm a bit peeved.

  13. I don't know about you, but story content wouldn't be my priority one if I were a developer working on a buggy, unfinished game with a lot of problems.

So, if you do something that is "what you think is expected", is predictable, right? And the opposite of predictable is...predictable?

Look, I get it, you aren't in a good mood. But you don't have to lash out at things that aren't the causes of your bad mood.

Floran have personality, even if it is barbaric, carnivorous, and not exactly wise. If you don't like that? Cool, you don't like it. But that doesn't mean it isn't there.

For the record, I think it's amusing.

Yeah, florans are pretty dumb and insipid at the same time. They feel cliche and soulless to me, personal opinion. For once, the humans dont seem like the most generic race.

That's an incredible logical fallacy you're using. Predictable is an adjective that describes a trope. A trope is not in and of itself the concept of "predictable", so the opposite of the trope is unrelated to the opposite of "predictable".

A trope and its ~POLAR OPPOSITE I BET DAT NOT WAT U EXPECTED HUH!!~ are both predictable because every single wouldbe-visionary tween on DeviantArt can take a commonplace trope, use the exact opposite of it, and pretend they're being creative and original. It's not creative, it's certainly not original, and it's exactly what you were trying to avoid: a cheap cliche.

Then you would not be very good at making a sci-fi game.

The entire appeal of sci-fi is the exploration of unknown space and the discovery of new cultures, peoples, and technologies from foreign and often ancient civilizations. Lasers and spaceships blasting all about may be the blood, but story is the very flesh of sci-fi, and skimping on it is not an option.

Story is the vital core of any sci-fi work's basic setting, and by that virtue, determines the entire game's feel and content. There's really nothing to lose and everything to gain from setting down the basic lore first thing. You don't need a detailed epic, but you do need some basic history and a feel for where the races are now, about how advanced they should be, how many factions divide them (there should be at least three per race to avoid unambiguous good / evil definitions), and what those factions' leaders are doing about other factions and other races.

And hell, if you write that your race stumbled onto a mystical energy thingumbob, look at that, you've armed yourself with a great basis for new gameplay elements deriving from that race.

Isent humans understanding alien reason kinda ludicrous to begin with?

Off course i dont think the devs tought that far when they created the races, they seem to be designed with easy humoristic irony in mind (nothing complex). The games universe as a whole seems to be light comedy based (its the style they seem to be going for, nothing realy wrong with it, but there are off course people that would prefear a more serious approach).

Edit: If they were to consider writeing a serious epic space saga universe, they would have to recreate the whole thing, i mean even if they gave florans realy good lore finding a poop dungeon would kinda ruin the whole feel anyway.

    Excuse me?!

So if I play as a Floran I don't understand my own character because I the player am not Floran? That is ludicrous. If that was the case they wouldn't even speak in English. They'd use Woodstock talk or Klingon script.

  19. Garatgh Deloi

Nha its not ludicrous, its kinda logical that humanity wouldent realy understand a alien race, i mean we barely understand our selves.

    I don't think you understand.

If the player is a Floran, then the player should be able to understand Florans.
