They're at the core of the planet, that means you should be digging downwards

I'm not certain if you're serious or not because of your username.

keep mining until you see lava and you see some red-ish orange ore. there deep just don't fall into the lava.

Core fragments are extremely annoying. If you had play Terraria before Starbound then lose the idea that going to "hell" or creating an "hellevator" asap is a bad idea, in the case of Starbound it is borderline required for your first planet and remain a common tactic on ocean planets to obtain ore. Just dig down until you see glowing red-orange shards looking things. Worth noting that right clicking will allow you to mine the background walls which can also contain ore and core fragments. If you are playing on the current build of the game then be sure to grab a diamond, maybe three if you can spot them as you will need them later. They are extremely rare but possible to spawn on your first planet. I generally find at least one with the core fragments.

Where on Terraria you need to take care of your world and make it your own on Starbound you simply harvest what you can take from it then abandon it once you are done. If you hate the idea of leaving behind sloppy worlds then know that you can delete the world files (completely reset them) without harming your character or ship. I generally do so myself once I reach endgame. Starbound is more about exploring but as a side effect caring about planets become meaningless as there is always more out there.

Basically, hellevator down until you hit lava. Core fragments are the glowy orange things.

You should know when you are deep enough usually, when you see an ore that lights up a little bit within the rocks and does provide dim lighting when exposed. Orange and pretty easy to spot. Fairly easy to find once you are down far enough, as it is everywhere scattered about. And yes practically at the core... :nuruhappy:

In the nightly (and presumably 1.0) you can find core fragments in the mine shaft structure on the first planet. (in crates)

O god, I hope they keep that. Even on the current build I mine up every crate just for the ore and useful stuff and sell the rest (and the crates themselves) later. It would be nice if you aren't force to put a giant hole in your starter planet as with colonies being a rewarding thing now as I'm sure some people would want to stick with their starting planet for that alone.

On all my most recent attempts, I found fragments in the crates, but it has never been enough to satisfy the mission. I've always had to dig for the rest.

    Darn, that is a shame.

I've been on nightly with a few characters, and I've always had just enough core fragments. The Adult Poptop boss always drops 10, and 10 more can easily be found in the many boxes.

I've yet to have to dig to the core, though I fell pretty far down a few times when mining the crap out of sand.

So I went to a lush planet and dug straight down from the spawn point, you won't nescessarily see lava first but you will have to go really far down where you are just about to or just get it to it and you will see this red ore all around, be careful, bring some health and remember you can always tele up from underground. :D Let me know if you still can't find them, we will figure it out. 20160524213840_1.jpg

You can find them in the mine by defeating mother poptop, she drops 20 fragments, enough to beat to unlock the gate.
