Any Tips For Defeating The Dragon?

I've crafted all the best weapons and armor I can make but I still get completely destroyed by the dragon. I feel like I have some serious problems to overcome.

1) My armor feels incredibly weak and seems severely underpowered.
2) The best weapons I can craft do almost no damage to him.
3) His hit box is weird. I have to jump directly into his face and will almost always take damage from simply bumping into him.

This doesn't feel balanced in the slightest but I could be missing something important.

 

Might sound weird now, but try following: You must not move a milimeter at all.
The dragon has ridicolously terrible aiming and wont hit you at all if you dont move. The only thing you need to watch are for his wings, those will still do damage. If he comes too close move a little bit, just a little bit and stand still then so he wont hit you with his breath.

You can beat him with a steel bow, that takes ages however. If you have some more time try raiding an USMC Base or Prison and try to obtain one of their weapons (Pulse rifle or Uzi) those will do alot more damage to him. Never meelee the dragon unless you have superior melee weapons.

Stand absolutely still ! Its vision is based on movement...

 

Got to the 3d printer, print a stack of auto turrets, place them.....watch the dragon slowly die because it does not know what to attack first.

Thats the super silly way.

 

Use the block placing at your advantage: Draw a huge upside-down L, so that he can't reach you and can't fly as well (it must be at least 30 blocks of height, because the dragon's jump is huge). After that, be creative, but find a way to attack him (a very tiny hole to shoot, 1-tick wall to attack, IDK, just make sure it is trapped and can't attack you)

avian airship holds all anti boss measurements needed. also helps that the boss may or may not kill them and get you some nice gear

 

Loot a good gun and shoot at the dragon. Have some place where the hide while your energy/health recharges.

I summoned it in the middle of a Floran town. I hid inside one of the houses and took potshots untill it died. I kinda hoped to create utter carnage, mayhem and fun and have him blast open the buildings and barbeque some Florans.

Unfortunately the Dragon's breath couldn't pierce even a meek veggie hut. It was disapointing. But an easy fight.

First time I fought (and killed) the dragon is: I made a flat walkway out of dirt about 2-3 screens in length, summoned the dragon in the middle, and ran back and forth shooting at it with a bow and arrow. It took awhile considering the immensely low damage output I was doing, but it was still really easy. Then again, I also had found rapid dash as well which really helped with mobility.

 

The easiest way to kill him is with explosives. I bought 30 or so bombs from my merchant, and killed the Dragon in less than 3 minutes. It can be a bit hard too hit him since you cant throw the bombs to far, but if you have good aim then it's pretty easy.

 

Maybe change the thread title to "any tips for defeating the Tier 3 Boss"? Spoilers and such.

Here are some tips.

• If you have a good shield, you can block his dragonbreath attack with ease and take little to no damage.
• The words "DRAGONBREATH" will appear above his health bar, allowing you to anticipate his attack with ease.
  
• If you have a handful of bombs from chests / frogmerchant / toolspawner, stick them in his face for an easy kill. (Works well on the UFO and Robot too)
• If you don't have a gun, get one - steel bow isn't bad, but if you can score an Avian machinegun it'll make a huge difference.

Basically it boils down to shooting him with a gun, then pulling out a shield to block his attack, rinsing and repeating.

You could also cheese him by standing under a ceiling with a small hole in it and shooting upwards, but that's not nice.
