Im assuming NPCs will exists for crafting/buying/selling/stuff in general. But will we have just random NPCs that move into our cities just because its a place to live? I think it would be nice if we built large cities for them to fill up with residents so they dont look like ghost towns.

I read something about some of them taking up residence in your ship for no apparent reason, but I don't think they're trying for how Terraria did things.

Yeah im pretty sure they are going to take a terraria type of approach, but with better AI

You kind of "collect" NPCs. At first they occupy your space station (which can hold a certain number) and then when you run out of room there you have to claim a home planet and send them there. The way you get the NPCs is varied, but I'm pretty sure they won't just appear when you've met certain conditions. I think one example I saw somewhere would be if you rescue someone from a monster, being stranded, etc. they'll join you.

Edit: Also, NPCs are procedurally generated, and you can collect A LOT of them. Maybe infinite.

NPCs will be AI controlled objects within the game that the player can interact with
    Quite revolutionary.

Two conflicting posts next to each other.

Let's just wait until a Developer answers or we have actual facts.

I have no solid info, though I know I've seen mention here and there about Starbound's NPCs. I don't think it'll be like Terraria did it (where you never meet most first, but rather they just show up after you've met certain requirements and have a home for them). What Active Link said seems to ring a bell, and the List of Announced Game Information's NPC section does have a little info. Sadly, we just don't seem to know a lot yet. It would be cool if one of the IRC regulars asked Tiy about NPCs in hopes that he might give out some cool new info.

Personally, I really hope Starbound doesn't do it like Terraria did...that game has less storyline than the chair my butt is planted in; there was no questing or NPC-related events minus the Goblin Army or Frost Legion, or generally just NPCs "showing up". Too bland, I think Chucklefish has something far more interesting and fun in store.

ME: We can collect NPCs? In addition to "collecting" (taming) monsters and filling a logbook with collectible info? I love collecting stuff in games, but this is so much... I guess I'll just have to play Starbound until I've collected everything.

    [whispered conversation with someone else]

ME: Wait, what? You mean, there's an infinite number of planets, monsters, and NPCs? ... I better stock up on chips and soda. This could take a while.

  10. Wait so is the limit on NPC's endless? X3

Also, since some NPC's are obtained through quests, I believe that there is going to be more of an emotional attachment to some of them rather then "oh, he's just the merchant."

  11. That should fall toward the player character's given 'alignment', determined by the player.
I myself want most of the NPC's to be expendable, and not have to deal with all the unnecessary emotion.
But at the same time, I want to choose who to keep and have a drink with.
