Any plans to add a level up system?

Any plans to add a level up system? Maybe something like skyrim in terms of skill gains, where as you do things like jump, run, shoot a ranged weapom, swing a melee weap etc, they gain exp and level up and grant you bonuses?

No, there are no plans to add levels/exp. The game is designed for the gear-based system, and there would be no reason they would change that mid-development.

While I am a fan of RPG-Style games (Dragon Age: Origins is my favorite game of all time), a leveling system really has no place in Starbound. At the very limit, I could see it working for the pet feature, since pets will most likely not have access to equipment, and they'd need a way to get stronger (it would probably be very general stat increases, most likely nothing like magic), but other than that, I can't think of a way to incorporate it that wouldn't largely affect the balance of the game.

I think this would be a good idea only what would the cap be on levels and once u have reached the highest level then what?

id prefer to see buff-unbuffs of the food system. Perhaps a limited NPC skillup system ie mechanic would start basic and acquire certain skills ( caps on these) that would perhaps related to specialisations within his profession ie learned skills over the course of a game this could open up development of those working for u etc. As long as its balcanced

Most likely Gear based and power up items that give more life and such

yeah gear and crafting is important , power up items are another system that should work

Perhaps that could be something that you do in the research section of your space station? Along the lines of Genetic Engineering/Manipulation for each race/species that you can capture and/or tame?

Some kind of pet training would be awesome.
Of course the main-game is about something different, but it would be nice to have some "Pokemon factors" in it. Would only make it better imo.

I also like the idea of genetic manipulation.
Maybe even being able to cross races of monsters to get new stuff.
The ground/basis for this is probably already implemented with the random-monster-generation.

I'd prefer not. One of the extreme detriments to multiplayer games today is a leveling system that makes it harder to group with friends rather than easier. Some games have a sidekicking system which works or not depending on it's application. But the best part of a system like this is you can play with your friends who don't have as much time to play as you do, and just box all the gear you attain together then pull out your higher ranked gear when soloing so you can always go back to being on even footing with your friends.

As someone in that situation with most games i try to play with my friends, trust me when i say this is the best way to handle it.

Well you could also share your leveled up pets then.
    Just saying. ;)

I'd go with leveling up pets. As long as the pets don't affect combat.

Pet battles. Or just level them up for pet perks. Like for example: every level a dog gets a 5% boost to a find treasure skill or something.

Agree with each and every word of this post. Definitely much easier to play with new friends who start the game by lowering gear. It would also make helping new players to the game who require some assistance less of an issue.

I don't think character stats are necessary for a game like Starbound. Equipment-based stats should be sufficient.

    Gear is your levels!

Seriously, items will like give you skill points and stuff.

Necro, Necro threads everywhere. Anyway, Starbound shouldn't need a level system, it'll more than likely have upgrades like Terraria.

I think I like the item system better for games like this. With leveling up: Oh boy i got another level, let's go do that again.. But with items: Oh something new! Maybe It'll be strong enough to take out those pesky virorbs I ran into on that last planet. :lod:
