You know if it were a special thing on the ship that you could not craft nor destroy like the tech thing and the storage locker then it could be turned on and off depending on the players difficulty setting.
Assuming of course that they make a difficulty setting.

OK, now that this game is finally a reality, I feel like I can start talking in the community. I think a simple option would be best when you spawn a new character. Store pixels on ship? Yes or No. Done.

I fully agree with others in this thread that the death penalty should be based on your current adventure. I am all for losing pixels instead of gear, and I don't even mind that they disappear and are not recoverable. I just think it's a bit cumbersome to have to always be on the watch of your pixel count.

Think of this: I have a great adventure in which I manage to net a sweet 2000 pixels. It was full of valor and glory and I made it back to my ship alive! I smile upon my heaping pockets of pixels. Then, the next day, I take a trip to go harvest some corn because "Daddy's STARVING" and on my way to my normally peaceful field I get waylaid and manage to die. I lose 500 pixels. For good. On my front door.

So you are telling me that the valiant and glamorous heroics that I lived through by the skin of my teeth to save up those 2000 big ones can be lost simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time? I should have been able to place my rightly earned treasures in a safety deposit box after that grueling trek and not have to always preserve my winnings with each and every step.

Wouldn't it make more sense that if you die while adventuring to GET that money in the first adventure, that you should lose THOSE?

So i have played terrarria, I have played dark souls, i have even played the Dark souls mod for terrarria. I agree that losing pixels on death is a good thing but there SHOULD be a way to store pixels. This would allow you to store pixels after each run. I do not back often and end up gaining 4000 pixels before returning home(lvl 2 planet) and thats usually after an hour or more of exploring and fighting etc. Why can i not store pixels? If i die i still lose a percentage of what i had, but only for that run. As far as i know they are removing most ways to easily get back home to the ship, so it's not like you can "escort" pixels every 5 seconds and just port back instantly before dying to save them. You will still have PLENTY of chances left to die.

ALSO i do not want to hang on to items(if they add selling them in the future) just to sell them when i need money. I would love to be able to sell and store that money, otherwise in the future i will waste plenty of space as well.

If you are seriously running back every 30 seconds to save 100 pixels then you are probably not enjoying the game/

Please give us a way to store pixels, thanks!

Yeah... I'm going to have to side with "let us store pixels". I don't like the idea of challenge through penalty; I can't think of a game where punishing the player has come out as a pro. I have been playing this game non-stop, but with how crafting sometimes requires pixels, it is seriously annoying to lose 20% of what I have every time I die (and I do die alot). Whenever I have a substantial amount of pixels, I am almost inclined to NOT explore (which is not a good thing in a game like this) because I don't want to lose my pixels and thus my ability to create items. My idea:

    I) Allow us to store some amount of pixels; 2000-3000 maximum.
II) Up the pixel cost on CERTAIN things, such as 3D printer recipes.
III) When the player loses the 20% of pixels on death, instead of sending them to the void, drop them on the ground for a minute or two.

Love the idea of having maximum amount of storing and can update the maximum line. This not only solves the problem but also increases gameplay experience.

I dislike the current system because in a way you're punished for not dying often, meaning the longer you live, the more pixels you end up losing when you do die.

I'd be much happier with a mechanic that lets you store your pixels, but you lose all the pixels you are currently carrying on death. This lets people goof of and die all the time when they want, but also carries a stiff penalty if you die in the later stages of an expedition.

Of course for me there's an inherent punishment for dying even without Pixel loss, and that's having to run 10 minutes back to that dungeon I died in. That's not an insignificant amount of time when you can only play for an hour or two in one sitting.

I don't see why we just can't have an option to enable storing when creating a character.
Tiy doesn't want people to store them because multiplayer stuff? Well fine, let the server admins decide.
People play their games differently, and even Dark Souls let's you retrieve your stuff.
The more money I accumulate, the less I will explore, because I don't want to lose 200,000 pixels because a mob pushed me off a cliff.

Terraria had the perfect balance, you lost money you had on you so getting out of dungeons was still difficult, but you were also able to save up.
Also not being able to pick it back up after death makes the game even more hard core than Dark Souls.

In the end, if they won't add the storring options, I am just gonna mod the game/cheat, and I am sure a lot of people will do the same.
I bought an adventure RPG, not a rogue like.

You should be able to store an infinite amount of pixels. As it is, I've resorted to storing ores and bars in a chest next to my refinery rather than converting them straight away. instead, only taking out and converting as many ores/bars as I need.

As such, I ignore farming monsters for pixels and instead farm worlds for ores which i shall convert into pixels when I need them. This gets me far more net worth much quicker, and they're capable of being placed into a chest in my ship.
So, not being able to store pixels is stupid.

Yeah, not being able to store an infinite amount sort of defeats the purpose of storing them at all. once you get to s certain point, you will still end up loosing more than you can put away when you hit the limit.

Therefore a solution would be to have the ability to craft or upgrade a unique pixel storage unit depending on Tiers available to the player, which would more or less reflect the level reached. Let's say that a Tier I storage can contain 500 pixels, a Tier II 2000 pixels and so on...

Thats fine in the beginning. But imagine when you are endgame and have accumulated say, 1 million. 25% of that is 250 000 pixles. Enemies drop, what, 35 pixles if you are lucky? Most dont drop at all, so, lets see, an average of 10/mob? Thats, hmm, 25 000 mobs you have to farm to get that back. No thanks. If they don't add a way to store cash, and like in Terraria punish only greed and the failure to plan ahead, the economics feel broken for me. It wouldn't be a carrot on a stick "Oh wow, I just lost 250 000, Ima get those right back! Lets go Pikachu!" It'd be more like "Well fuck.... *sigh*... That's enough playing for today." And that is not a positive feeling for me, and would significantly shorten the life span of this game for me personally. Even if I could rob my base blind and sell stuff to NPC to get my 250 000 back, it would just feel like dismantling everything I worked for. Again, not a positive feeling.

In my opinion there should be some kind of incentive to get back in the saddle, especially in a game like this that has no real beginning or end.

I suppose one alternative would be if the money actually drops where you die, so you can go and get it back, or at least the majority of it. That would give me an incentive to continue playing instead of just sighing and turning the game off in frustration. This doesn't mean It would be equally good if they lowered the penalty though, it's not as if I'd be happier of I only lost 50 000 instead of 250 000. It is still just punishing the players.

Take Super Mario for example. You have your set of lives that you lose one of every time you fail. This isn't frustrating, because it isn't punishing the player. It's increasing the tension and forcing the player to focus harder to win. See where I'm getting with this? I don't feel encouraged or focused, I just feel annoyed and bored at the prospect of farming that money back. Don't annoy or bore your players, that's not a good business model. Either give me some way to store my pixles, or a way to get back what I lost. If not, well, It would take away so much enjoyment from this game, which is a shame, because it is a fantastic game otherwise.

I would like to be able to store them without having to either spend hours grinding for more or cheat to get more.
Any amount of pixel storage would be welcomed for me as long as I can store at least some of it.

You do realize how ridiculous this argument is right? How would you have accumulated 1 million pixels in the first place? That means as you pointed out that you've killed 25,000 mobs. In that time you really found nothing to spend it on? You also managed to kill that many without dying already? If you got to that point why are you even still playing that character? You can't expect anyone to take that clearly unrealistic example as some sort of argument against dropping pixels on death.

Yet if you lose all of your lives you lose ALL of you game progress and have to start all the way back at the very beginning. Surely, the meager death penalty that Starbound has is minor in comparison. Really the lost pixels on death is negligible compared to death penalties of other games.

Of all the ideas I have seen, being able to store all of your pixels, but only on the ship seems the most balanced way to handle this.

It prevents players from storing pixels whenever they want and thus preserves the threat of death while on planet.

and a hard core mode could easily be implemented for players who don't want the ability to store pixels.

Perhaps in teir 2 or 3 limited storage might be craftable for planet side storage, to make things more interesting. But ship side storage would have to be limitless.

I mean really, the NPCs can apparently store pixels (not literally of course but you can find them in their homes) so it begs the question, how stupid is the player character that they can put their hand in their pocket and place their precious pixels in a container.

I agree, i DONT want us to be able to store pixels, you die, you loose them, its your fault, but what i REALLY want and what will fix things for everyone, is to be able to trade items...

A Trade menu, that allows us to trade items and Pixels, kinda like the menu from TF2, so that way we can buy and sell things with pixels, and if they want to store them, get a non active player, and a friend, give your pixels to your friend via Trade, then login to the server with the non active account, get your pixels back, then there safe on your non active account!
