When you build Pam a house and she hugs Penny, they both briefly turn invisible when they hug... might need a sprite for that. ^_^'

Content packs and XNB mods are actually inter-compatible. Content packs work on-the-fly, with the intent that you only replace what you intend to change, either replacing sections of the PNGs hidden inside the XNBs, or by replacing the entire PNG in the case of, say, character sprites.

Content packs can also replace text in YAML files inside XNBs.

However, the most important arguments for me are that
      1. Crafting content packs doesn't require fiddling with XNB packaging tools (except to get the original, unmodified content in order to modify it),
      2. The use of a content pack doesn't require touching the contents of the Content folder. Content packs just require SMAPI and the Content Patcher mod. From there, you just drop the content pack to modify things into the Mods folder and you're done.

Cool thanks, and yeah mod managers can definitely be helpful, no doubt about it, just so long the manager is easy to install and use and provides all your use case needs. Overwriting files is still very easy but it definitely has its drawbacks.

One use case need I see is can you tell it to apply a mod permanently to the game files so that the game + mod is more portable, or would you have to make others "install" the mod manager (if it even requires being installed and not simply run from anywhere)?

Content Patcher isn't really a mod manager in and of itself. It doesn't have tools for selecting mods from a list. It is a mod that uses SMAPI. The content packs are then added as if they were SMAPI mods. So any player using a mod manager such as that provide by Nexus Mods could add the Content Patcher mod and content packs they want by employing said mod manager.

Since Content Patcher is a mod, it can just be added to the Mods folder like any other SMAPI mod, and the content packs themselves go in the Mods folder beside Content Patcher. But it does require having SMAPI installed, which I can't vouch for the portability of.

This doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm on the 1.3 version of the game and when I drag the files and replace them in my Stardew folder nothing seems to be changing. Is there something else I'm missing? I only have the 1.3 version of ACC downloaded.

*EDIT: I had to download the full version first and THEN the 1.3 addition to the game. I'm a dummy.

Yes, sadly this is a known issue. We would need someone with some spritework experience to be able to make that missing asset for us.

Speaking of Content Patcher, @Blanchard, do you mind if I begin work on creating a CP version of Anthro Characters Continued?

Cool. I'll start working on it this evening. It's going to take some time, but I'll try to keep folks updated on my progress.

Okay: here's my first update. I'm working on this on stream. I've basically got all the images pared down and/or copied. I just have to write the markup that makes it work, and then will come the cycles of testing and correcting until I'm certain I have a full, working content pack.

Anthro Characters Continued - Content Pack Edition will:
                        1. come in two versions: one for pre-beta (SDV v1.2), and one for the beta (SDV 1.3b). only be available for the beta and beyond, due to limitations with the Content Patcher mod. The beta version It will be self-contained and will not need the pre-beta version with it.
                        2. fully support all languages supported by un-modded Stardew Valley at release.
                          • For both English and non-English languages, the static NPC characters will be anthropomorphic, and icons and other assets will have appropriate textures.
                          • The Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese versions will have the goat-nose "TOS" poster in the doctor's office. All other versions will have the "FLU" poster with the goat nose.
                          • All non-English versions will have the appropriate non-English graphics for signage and text.
                        3. probably be smaller, overall.
                        4. require the player to have both SMAPI and Content Patcher installed and running to use it.
                        5. be considered WIP (work in progress) at release.
                        6. likely be missing most assets not already available in Anthro Characters Continued (such as Pam and Penny's hug asset).
I have taken some artistic license. I have decided to not "clean up" the sides of the desks in the Joja cubicle side view, and have restored the skeleton to the desk most front-facing in the side view. I felt that the missing grime and the removal of the skeleton took away some of the sense of dread that comes with that scene in the un-patched version.

Finally, if you want to watch me work on ACC-CPE or play Stardew Valley, I'm doing so on Twitch. I stream as CallMeSabs on Twitch. I normally stream at 10:00 PM on Sundays and Mondays, and 8:00 PM on Fridays. I will also be streaming Thursday (May 31, 2018) beginning at 6:00 PM as a bonus stream. (All times are in US Mountain Daylight Time/UTC-6).

EDIT: Writing checks I can't cash is not a good way to go.

Second update: I noticed there are some un-textured humans left in the game. In particular, there are humans in the Desert Oasis casino area, and among the Night Market. I don't know if these are intentional or if we're just waiting for pixel artists to show up and make changes. For now, I think most of them will remain with default textures.

the night market is a fairly new part of the game, i don't think we've had anyone make sprites for its people yet.

That I did know, but thank you. The Desert Oasis, though? I found one usable sprite I can grab from the Festivals spritesheet. One other character is there from Festivals, but he's facing the wrong way (toward the player in Festivals, but away in Casino) so I can't use him.

Third Update: I have found someone to do some of the missing art, and they have supplied all-new textures for the Night Market's denizens. The denizens of The Desert Oasis are still unskinned, for the most part. I was able to work out how to get a character from Festivals.xnb into the Casino (I didn't have to give her a Club Card, because she apparently already had one).

The edits are all complete, and, no, it's not smaller. It's near twice as large, compressed, for some reason. And there's very little I can do to make it smaller (aside from maybe making more granular image selections. I tried changing the graphics from individual files to a single tilesheet, and all that saved was about 100kb.

It does fully support all languages, though when I release it, I'll be looking for help identifying any issues.

Speaking of releasing, @Blanchard, I still need to know how that's going to happen. I know I want to create a separate Nexus listing for it, but I don't know what you want to do. :)

First I'd like to thank you for your work on the project~ I would say keeping things together in our two main locations would be for the best; we have a Nexus listing already that I'll link below. We are playing with mostly Gav's work and I'm the only person "officially" given consent to moderate the project (though Gav's been extremely generous with allowing their assets to be used freely for the development of the mod) and so I personally think leaving things easy to find for the community would be for the best. I assume the files are too big for Chucklefish to allow you to upload directly to the forum but there are workarounds for that I can do to get them on the main mod post.

@Blanchard Nah, it's just over 2MB. Give me the next day or so to attempt to upload it in a PM to you.

I'll be happy, if you like, to help monitor and maintain the content pack files in order to keep things up to date, and also add new imagery as it comes in. I wrote the JSON markup and split out the images quickly, but with thoughts toward flexibility and also toward forward-compatibility with other mods.
