The issue that I have with both of those examples is that they are based purely on physical strength. I am not ignoring your point, it is well made, but for a game like Starbound you can't really ignore sentience.

I could choose to become proficient in firearms, or melee weapons, or scientific research, or any number of different things; so could you. It all comes down to choice, time, and effort.

Well, obviously different races COULD have different benefits besides just intellegence and physical strength.
There could easily be someone who has wings, someone who can breathe underwater, someone who could become bipedal or quadripedal at will, someone who was extremely flexible, someone built for climbing extreme cliff-faces without aids, etc.

That is a fair assessment. I guess it all just depends on what the developers drum up.

    Touché.

I think it could easily be balanced out to make character advantages work out for them. Like, for example a lizardman class.

The lizard class could be a squishier class in that they take slightly more dmg from atks, but they have a slightly higher regeneration.

Humans for example could have no advantage, or disadvantage.

I saw one thread for like armadillo people *shrugs* but like, the shell on their back could have natural armor equal to say the lowest tier in game armor, but they are squishier than usual so they take more dmg from the front than other classes where as from behind they take less dmg.

At the same time too having multiple races could just be a roleplay thing, even if I think it would be cool to have minor bonuses/negatives.

Well... I see where you're coming from, a balanced playing field where you pick what stat you want say a 5 point boost, then what you wanna lose 5 points in...

    maybe.

I think I have mentioned it many times before in this thread, a simple solution to this dilemma would be the ability to choose your bonus after having chosen your race.
As long as there is no retarded bonuses to choose (Flight and various others) there is no reason why this system would not work and satisfy a player's needs.

My GOD DID YOU READ THE FIRST POST?! Basically he said. "No class/race bonuses, they are stupid if you want to play whatever way you want with whatever race you want." Have you played Skyrim? If you have try making a nord wizard.

I agree and disagree. (I only read the first page, so I don't intend to be redundant)

There are games where I really like racial attributes, but honestly I hate how imbalanced and limiting they can be -- so I agree. But I think there should still be some differences, albeit very minor.

That, imo, is perfect. A 5% speed boost in one biome is not in any way like +20 mashed potatoes mastery. That's one environment out of who knows how many, and fits very well with the theme. A desert race could do something ever so slightly better in a desert, aqua race can move 5% faster in water, underground race mines a material 5% faster etc.

Sure, you can make items for all of those. There should be items for that. But that's not a good enough reason, imho, to say no to such a minute race specific bonus. Nothing playstyle related, just a little nod at their lore. I'm not a fan of limiting your customization, but I do also dislike shoving everything into items.

Yes it would be pretty good to do this, like, I want to be a tough lizardman, so you choose lizard man and a kind of like, tough personality that could add like, speed down, armor up, hp up, stuff like that. That way, whatever cosmetic skin you have, it doesn't affect the statistics that you want your character to have. It'd be great to have both a tanky lizard man and a fast scout lizard man on the same team.

I did read it... and I agree some races often have advantages in some classes more so than others. but really.... I was just offering my opinion as a counter argument to the first post.... so here's a question, how does treating me like an idiot get you anywhere?

I was trying to say that there could be class abilities that didn't screw you over for class options, things like water breathing and such, not things like enhanced magical strength. I'm glad you bothered to read MY post.

you said nothing to really argue with my point, and I find your point insulting, and pointless. So grats you accomplished to do to yourself, what you tried to do to me, make yourself look like an idiot.

I meant that he was right. And as for what you said i dont think i fully undestood. Would the classes with advantages have any downside? Also it would have to be really well balanced out, to not to make some classes plainly better than others. Sorry, im kind of trigger happy with the capslock :p

I am making a scorpion based race and i am making back story parts so it can't used it's stinger or have a super hard shell and that is because of this thank you.

I can see your concerns, and they are valid.

But At the end of the day, all Stats being added by players are total speculation anyway.

We have no idea what the developers are planning in regard to there being Race specific pros and cons.

Races with these Pros / Cons added to there description are just there for added Flavor.

And even if the Devs decide to add Pros/Cons to there races, I really doubt that they will use our versions of Pros / cons (Stats) as a base for the final races they put into the game.

So again, it’s not really hurting anyone if people wish to add a little bit of stats to define there species.

And any ways they said there will be no stats just armor and gear that gives you them.
and by they i mean the devs

I agree with this, it being a very sound solution to the problems that could arise with different races in-game. In addition to this, I think every race, including humans, should get some small (possibly unique) bonus(es); just as long as one ability is not more or less powerful or useful compared to another. Think of all the different abilities, together, like being along the lines of a more balanced , :paper:, or :scissors:.

well, yeah the idea was that class traits would give disadvantages too. For example the armadillo people (in my example) had the ability, that their shell would offer slightly increased defense from behind, but damage from the front would hit harder than other classes.

Or for example a class with slightly longer breathing underwater wouldn't be over powered I imagine, as I'm sure the ability would come in handy from time to time but I don't think it would be a game changer.

You should have added another option to the poll - "partially agree".
I agree that races shouldn't have fighting bonuses - you should be whatever you want with each race. But i see no problems with small utility bonuses. For example an avian could jump slightly higher by flapping his wings. A cat-man could go into a slightly faster sprinting mode and start running on all 4. A bat-man could see slightly better in the dark and so on.
