why hello there, Lizardman, how are you toda... Is that a copper axe...? BEGONE FROM MY SIGHT YOU ABOMINATION!!!

I think there should be subtle racials, so that the races will feel slightly different from each other. However, I do agree on that different races should still plays the same way regardless of race.

I do remember that there was said that the races will have some difficulty getting gear from the race they're not, such as : If you are a human, you will have a harder time getting a floran armor that will heal you over time, but if you are a floran you will have an easier time to get the same armor.

I cant for the life of me remember where that post is though.

I will admit that I didn't read the entire thread, as I saw a lot of back-and-forth without achieving a lot. I don't feel my point is particularly relevant to that discussion. It is, however, relevant to the topic itself, as posted by Swinburn.

If there are inherent racial traits, I'd suggest making them idiosyncrasies, not a list of bonuses and penalties.

For instance, let's assume there's a drowning mechanic in the game. While all races can drown, the reason a member of a given race will drown can differ. As an example:
    • Humans, Apex: Conventional suffocation. No air = no breathing = eventual death.
    • Hylotl: Their amphibious lifestyle has weakened their ability to breathe water. They don't suffocate, but breathing water is difficult enough that their lungs and gills tire to the point where they can no longer breathe anything.
    • Floran: If they behave like terrestrial plants, they would take in carbon dioxide through their skin. Conventional suffocation wouldn't affect them, but complete immersion in water would drown them just as easily as any other race.
    • Robots: Robots don't need to breathe, in water or out, but they aren't waterproof and can't properly vent waste heat underwater. Being immersed may play havoc with their internal systems and lead to them either short-circuiting or critically overheating after too much time spent immersed.
While each race uses the same in-game mechanic (while underwater, you have a time limit until you need to get out of the water before you start suffering damage and eventually die), the reasons and flavor behind that mechanic differ by species, giving each species a unique 'feel' to them.

It might even slightly change what sort of equipment they'd need to dive underwater indefinitely: Humans & Apex would need conventional scuba gear or rebreathers, Hylotl would need a filtration system to make long dives easier on their respiratory system, Florans would need a pressure suit filled with carbon dioxide, and Robots would need environmental sealing and possibly a liquid-based coolant unit. These pieces of gear would be race-specific (they'd only function for the race they're intended for), but serve the same purpose mechanically - to allow a member of their intended race to stay submerged for longer periods/indefinitely.

Of course, I'm only using drowning mechanics as an example. There's a number of other small things you could do that would provide each race with unique flavor, without actually making them mechanically different from other races.

Heck, you could incorporate the flavor entirely into the game world without any actual changes to the characters themselves. Imagine the following exchange between a player and a tutorial NPC:

Robot Trainer: Alright, you newly-manufactured tin-head. Time you learned how to swim.
Robot Player: Why do I need to learn how to swim? I'm a robot - couldn't I just walk the bottom of the pool?
Robot Trainer: Are you defective or something, rookie?! Clean the dust out of your CPU fan! YOU ARE NOT WATERPROOF. You either learn to swim, or risk getting water in your systems and short-circuiting! Now you can get environmental sealing modules, but those cost RESOURCES! Resources we don't have! Now get in that pool, and start treading water!
    Robot Player: Y-Yes sir!

And THAT is what i would LOVE to have ingame! I dont wanna running around guy buttnaked with some supermagic yelling about his superskills and how were noobs,no,just no,you are an organics, improving you knowledge to get better equipment, and gear,to protect your poor body, the stats are ingame as chips as metioned, you upgrade your character with that,i like that player is as example shot into leg, makes player slower, and with different animation, imagine guy buttnaked running in vacuum just because he has over milion of HP because he has filled skill tree, thats nonsense of course,no offense tough,so he has to get implant,OR suit wich will make hes character alot better, gathering resources and getting better by the procedural way...
