From what Tiy has said, doing this would take twice as long (or more) than just updating through Steam. Honestly, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to just have Steam installed.

Hmm, just about everything you have posted on the forums of late would contradict that claim

And chances are you'll be able to download the initial game there, updates are another story.

I'm not going to argue the debate of what Steam is, or is not. I use it personally and have for awhile, it never gives me issue, so I'm really glad that Starbound is on Steam, it also saves me from having to remember my Humble Bundle info and login to it constantly, my vote to this is of course Steam.

That said, if anyone has issues making Steam work, shoot me a convo, and I'll do what I can to help you out and try to make it work for you.

It wont happen. Having 2 different platforms on a beta that will be updating potentially multiple times a day is just unreasonable. Thats double the amount of work for no real reason.

the only reason i would pick a DRM free version of the beta is because Steam can easily slow down your system

otherwise i guess im for steam as well

The beta isn't the game.. The game will have separate options available, but the beta should be provided on the platform where the most people can interact with it, as well as the platform that offers the fastest and most stable update delivery method.

Steam really is a no-brainer in this case... What would be the point of releasing a DRM-free version several updates behind?

What I want to know though is if the Steam DRM will be used for the game (I don't care if "Steam is DRM!", I'm talking specifically about Steam's DRM that requires it to be on for you to play your games).

I would hope so but now in this day and age that's a easy thing to bypass but might as well add it and give the space pirates hell

If the beta gathered information on it's own for the devs then I would be fine with a DRM set up. But if it didn't then I would not see the point just yet

I agree. I've had very few if any problems with steam.

I like the social aspect that I used to have Xfire for(and the hours log) and steam's streamlined so I don't have to exit the game window, the amazing sales, and the corroboration of all of my games that I have in their own categories, ready to go. I'm lucky enough to have two monitors, so I always have a chat or the steam window open on the second screen.

Everything is organized and shared with my friends while otherwise when I play a standalone game it actually makes me feel detached and alien, more of a pain, really.

Hard for me to think of many reasons but some people have their reasons that are hard to change.

Steam seems like the best choice here. From what tiy has said, doing both is not an option for the beta. For release, I totally expect them to release a DRM free version as well as a steam version. But it's a beta, so those usual conveniences aren't really a problem. Steam is where the vast majority of the PC gaming crowd exists, and it's the easiest way for the developers to get their content pushed out. Seems like an easy choice to me, so long as they get a DRM free version done by release.

We do not know when it will release.

I do not think that the publication of the new version once a week is too difficult.

I vote steam. I use it and I have zero problems. Steam for me is useful. I can search for games on it in certain genres. I don't know but I think the release should be for steam and have a seperate download here. But the beta... Ya you have to use steam.

I would rather they spend more time working on the game rather than placating a minority who don't like Steam.

They may have good reasons for not wanting to install Steam, but IMHO having the devs working on the game rather than farting around distributing updates trumps those reasons in this case.

I imagine the later stages of beta may see them release it in other methods anyway so they can see how they work. Final product is going to be on more platforms that Steam allows for, so they have to test them at some point.

But the developers did not warn us about Steam, at the time of pre-order. I pre-ordered the game to see the beta, and now I've got a further obstacle.

Maybe the full game will also require Steam, because it is more profitable for the developer. And we find out about it until the last moment.

Thanks for sharing that valuable opinion about how people like me should miss out so that the devs can spend a few extra minutes on development for you. :p

    Steam is DRM.
It prevents you from launching the game if you aren't logged on Steam, OR you don't own the game.

    Is it a bad thing?
Not necessarily. I tend to avoid any kind of DRM, but I occasionally make exceptions for good games. Like Dark Souls for example.

Now I am not saying YOU should make an exception, but think about the people working behind it. Do you want them to waste about two hours extra time each time they want to issue an important update?
