   Fossil parts are no different from 1.0 and 1.1, so you can use them to create completed fossil displays that will be added to your collection.
   The thing that matters here is that picking up a complete fossil that was completed in 1.0 will not be added to your collection while a 1.1 completed fossil will.

   Marking as resolved and closing since the answer above provides the solution.
   
   Since it's more or less caused by a technical limitation the only solution is to regain the stuff. The 1.1 items have a new collection flag that adds the functionality for the collection which renders the old items "incompatible".
