All characters share same planet.

I discovered that all my characters share the same planet. So if i have removed something or buildt something all my characters will see the changes. This can be a problem when you first start off and need resources like trees to build. How do i reset a world completely or is this just a bug?

Not a bug, the universe stays the same your characters differ. However, if you went to a mp server it would use the hosts universe. To wipe your universe I believe you can go to the directory example "Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\giraffe_storage" and completely delete the universe folder to wipe the world.

I enjoy this. You can build a welcome center for new characters. Give em a little place to sleep and whatnot. Up to you how much help you wanna give them. As for trees... that's what saplings are for. I made a nice tight orchard not to far from spawn.

If you're already out of trees on your home world and deleted the saplings I'm sure your more progressed character can get some saplings from somewhere to plant at home.

I don't like this change. This mean i can't start anew without deleting my progress on a more advanced character. Its like starting a new character in Skyrim but all the dungeons are cleared. Not a good choise for single players like me.

I hate this. Sure, I can give the next character I start a boost... but I don't want the next character I start to have a boost. I don't want them landing on a planet I've already combed over for resources or one I've already seen all the monsters on, I want them to start somewhere unexplored and potentially dangerous.
As it stands the only way to give one of my new characters an interesting experience is to spawn a bunch of quest items via the console commands and fix the ship enough that the FTL works, then blast off to a random corner of the galaxy to find a new planet for them to start on.

You wont start "somewhere dangerous" no matter what you do (even if you delete the universe every time). Since the starting world is now allways a gardern biome world (all of them looks kinda the same, all of them have a mine and nothing else and they are all harmless).

...Which is yet another thing I don't like, to be honest, but with the changes to the way the universe is set up in general I've gotta accept it. Still missing the old Star system days where you had variety within the tiers of planets, and it wasn't 'beat X boss to unlock cold planets!'.

That'ts off the point. If i were to clear the whole planet of trees for instance and forget to replant them, i can't start a new character. By same world I mean physically the same world. It will evenually be depleted of all useful resources meaning this is a step in the wrong direction. Each player should have they're own world like before (i don't mind if the planet is the same, but that it is fresh new when i start a new character) . This feature is suggesting you only going to play one character. That is fine if it were forgiving to die. Some day i want to try hardcore mode but not until i feel ready for it and with a depleted planet this is going to be even more hardcore. I have to carefully pick up things with new characters in mind. This is not a good feature at all. If it were multi-player, sure but on single player? But let's face it. It's not a good feature, unless you can choose to start fresh or not.

[DOUBLEPOST=1422625731][/DOUBLEPOST]Anyways. After the update popped a random character to see what have changed, I kind of ruined the planet before i realized that they share the same physical world. I'm eager to play and I will have to settle with this for now. What files do i need to delete to reset the universe?

If you want to reset the whole universe you simply need to delete the "universe" folder (the game will generate a new one). (Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\giraffe_storage\Universe). But that will delete all worlds, even worlds where you have bases/buildings/etc.

Its also possible to just reset the spawn world but thats a bit trickier. You have to figure out what world file inside the universe folder that is the spawn planet and then just delete that one, it can be done with the "last date modified" info on files (starbound dosent modify the file unless you go too a world).

Thanks. My old character is gone so i guess my old base is gone too so nothing to keep i guess.

I, in fact, despise this. Now I realize that I am being a bit selfish to those who wanted this feature, but come on! Why can't we at least choose if two or more characters share a world? A system similar to Terraria maybe? I mean, sure this is cool in some ways but I have friends who use this computer as well and now they have to start in a world almost totally drained of resources! I really would be fine with this if you could choose to create a world for more then one character or one world for one character.

Please let this be a thing. If the devs don't do it, someone make a mod.

If you're on singleplayer, a quick and dirty workaround is to delete the world file for that world. I believe /whereami yields the shipworld filename.

I know this is just a workaround and doesn't answer the basic question wether or not this is good game design, but at least you'll have an intact planet.

+1 for being able to choose if your characters share the same worlds or not.

What would be ideal is if each created world is given a random seed # (1827433 or whatever) so if you wish to have 2 characters share the same universe you simply enter the same seed # when starting a new character and they will then share the world, anything different and they are in their own little galaxy.

This not only lets us keep characters separate, (great for when you share the comp with other players and don't want to have to compete for resources) but would also let us easily share interesting/challenging universe generations with each other by just sharing the seed #,

Oh thank goodness, I was wondering what this was about. It's unfortunate though because I just bought the game recently, and I love rogue like (aka you die you're dead) games. So, I kept my character on hardcore.. Now if the character dies all the items are gone, and my first one I dug up SOOOO much of the materials and such x.x Thanks to all those that posted information about it so I know I'm not the only one dealing with it haha

Nope, I don't like this feature. I like to create a new character from time to time, and every time it gets harder and harder to find resources in the first planet. I like the idea of sharing the whole universe, but NOT the first planet.

For now you can simply build a small house on the first planet and throw in a couple chests with all the resources needed to get any new characters off planet in moments, and even hand me down weapons, armor etc. While this might not be the ideal solution, it does get around having to mine a increasingly depleted planet for resources every time you start a new char.

Delete the planet file and let the game regenerate it from scratch. Bam, you have a new planet, untouched.

I know, but I feel like that kills the feeling of a starting wit a new character if you suddenly have all the resources needed to repair your ship and fly away...

I didn't know that was possible, thanks, but it's almost like cheating... I mean, Its like I have a problem in the game that makes me touch the program's files if I want to play the game fully again. That seems like a poor programming decision to me...

Aye, although after the 2nd char or so the 1st planet is really just a time sink, even on perma death difficulty, the chances of dying on the starter world are pretty much nil so being able to skip the boring harvesting so you can head out there and explore new worlds rather then spend 4 hours going through the motions of farming starter resources can be a good thing.
