Closed All Character gone after Glad Giraffe Update

    I just update starbound, launch it.... and no more characters...

    I 've look in the player folder and try to use a .bak but nothing... so it seems the files of my character are still here...

    do i have a chance to get them back ???

    I went to hop onto the Nightly version after the update I just downloaded, and my character is gone, too.

    However, I noticed that the menu screen said the version is called "Glad Giraffe" now, so that could be why the characters got wiped. Since I'm fairly new to playing on Nightly, I'm not sure if it's common for characters to get wiped at such times.

    I have the same problem. So I deleted my characters in the player file, and copied the backups. They are still gone. Looked at my log and it says something about shield health. I know this isn't a mod, since I don't have any. Anyway, here is the log.

    I'm pretty sure this is a bug due to this "glad giraffe" version and not a wipe... hope the dev team gonna release a patch for it...

    Since nightly is used for testing bugs, always expect something like this. If anything or any bug happens in nightly, just post your log so that the developers can take a look and try to fix it. You may have to just live with whatever happens to your character or universe. That's life in nightly.

    Addition: I don't mind making a new character, but without the Dev blogs, we don't know what's going on and don't know whether to report this as a bug. If it's a new feature, please, just let us know.

    Yeah, there's definitely an issue with character loading. Attached is the log, but this is the offending line:

    EDIT: Apparently they changed from shieldHealth to shieldStamina, but forgot to update the player saves. After switching the names in Notepad++, I get this:

    By the looks of it, they're playing witht he save format and characters will probably be broken for a little while, unless somene can script a way to fix it all. In the meantime, I'm going to edit the hell out of my current character and see if I can get her running again.

    EDIT2: After removing both my spawn sword and my bow, and trying to completely replace the header before the blueprints section, I got nothing more than a JSON error because reasons. I think it's safe top assume we're going to have to wait until someone smarter than me figures it out or Chucklefish fix it for us.

    Just when I finished my Castle Apartments I saw this. I hope my character(and world) aren't going to be deleted. It took me three days to find the materials and build the castle :cry:[DOUBLEPOST=1440640835][/DOUBLEPOST]EDIT: Okay guys, I found a temporary turnaround. Copy your player and universe files to the stable version of the game. This should allow you to access your character without loss.

    Obviously, this also means you're making your character in the stable version, but I guess that goes without saying. Just so you don't accidentally lose your character and buildings while on Nightly.

    Same here. Didn't played a day and now got this problem. I'll wait for a fix from developers.

    I've been trying to fiddle with the player files and remove the shielhealth areas from it. But so far, no luck. I am just not good with all the coding and what needs to be removed with it. If I get it, I'll let you know so you can have your characters back.

    Edit: I can't figure it out. I'm just going to make a new character and save the old ones in case this IS a bug and not a new feature. Don't care too much about these characters anyway. This is nightly, I expected this.

    If you still want to stay on the relatively new side of things, Unstable works too.

    It seems to be more than shieldHealth, as after I got rid of the first entry, it came up with JsonException in my post above. Comparing the header data for a new character and the old one, they seem to have really changed how player data is saved. Screenshot of both in Notepad++, left being old and right being new.

  12. Another painfully obvious and unsatisfying answer. This isn't really a bug. They make changes all the time to how they handle character and item information and as this is nightly, it's expected that character wipes will happen. No one should be playing the nightly like they would a stable or even unstable character.

    It would be unreasonable for us to expect that every time they made a change, they introduced a script to convert older characters to work with it.
