I think the addition of a spawn trigger item could add a lot to game, and might be a solution for players trying to burrow through dungeons or around security. Alarm Blocks: Alarm blocks would be a background item, that would be placed behind the foreground blocks in a dungeon (or forts, towns, etc) and would simply be a brick of different appearance (Apex labs alarm blocks would be red blinky lights, monster alarm blocks would appear as a nest). When a player exposes an alarm block by digging the block out of in front of it (there is no way to spot them otherwise, so this would be accidental), aggressive monsters/npcs of that biome/dungeon spawn nearby and charge toward the source of the alarm. Mining an alarm block out of the background would return a useless block of no value to the player. Alarm blocks could be placed under the walls of dungeons, forcing players to do the obstacle course or fight the spawns. Mining a 3x3 square could result in a ton of monsters appearing to attack the player. Placing alarm blocks under furniture in towns would lead to npc guards appearing and attacking players when they stole items from town. Fighting the guards would flag the town aggressive. Underground monster dens could be a lot more interesting with this mechanic tossed in.
It's a good idea, but you can always break the background before you break the foreground... so, every one would just go around knocking out the walls behind what they were going to initially just mine, if it had any chance of being an alarm block... But I _REALLY_ like the idea...
That would probably fix it. "OH CRAP! GUARDS!!!" ... sure, you might be able to get away with some petty theft... but do too much, and eventually you'll get caught.
