I was thinking maybe it would be a pretty good idea to have an item like an air generator that would fill enclosed areas with air. Same with heat so you cant freeze to death inside your own house

Sorry, your original post said, "I was thinking maybe it would be a pretty good idea to h".

I am going to take h = have
No idea why he didn't want to complete that word - but he completed all others.

Anywho - I don't think "structure" recognition mechanics are deployed yet.
I remember some update june - august time they were mentioning an item which would make dungeons invincible.
But they couldn't get it to work properly at that time.

Once that item comes, the code for structure recognition should be coming along with it.
    Hence making such things possible.

Till then, the only possibility of a quick fix is if they allow the Air buff to be emitted via some object,

the best they could do right now is probably a place able thing that allows you to breath within a certain range, like the campfires with heat

That sounds like a great idea honestly. Sorry bout the "h" stuff phone bugged :(

I don't think the question is as much whether they h, but whether they h or H. Anyways, I like the idea.

The Vents basically act as bubbles of air just as torches protect against cold and are controlled via wiring.

This idea is pretty solid, though I would like to see game mechanics for heat and air similar to the way water works. It fills up the inclosed spaces, but vanishes when it touches the raw background.

This idea of air pockets would have many of the same restrictions for moons/asteroids as the current heat mechanics on ice planets. That is, characters would be forced to stay near these pockets to the point that every room of your base must have one of these items in a central location.

Even if simplified to one level: filled or empty compared to liquids. If you build very large bases, fill it slowly with air and a meteor hits a side. There is going to be some major computational loads im sure with this kind of system. Not sure how optimized the fluid dynamics are. I haven't drained any ocean biomes. Not sure how much this would actually add to gameplay over just "auras" like fire heat. But if it wouldn't bog the game down. I'd be for it.

Maybe something like the life support units having different tiers or something similar. The better the life support is, the higher air pressure you can get in a room of a fixed size. If you make a bigger room, there will be a lower (but equal everywhere in the room for simplification) air pressure, which determines the speed of suffocation and maybe some other things. Punching a hole in the wall will release all air, resulting in 0 pressure, but skipping the fluid calculations. The air pressure in each point of an enclosed room will equal something like (generator_tier)/(roomsize), which only needs to be recalculated when you change the room size. Shouldn't be too taxing to determine the size of the room quickly, unless it's extremely big, and then it can just be considered 0 automatically. Though this way it would be impossible to pressurize a huge area.

Also, maybe the life support could have an additional proximity based status effect kind of a thing to simulate the air flowing out of it, which would prevent suffocation even if the rest of the room is depressurized.

I made a mod for this just the other day: Liquid Air. It's not perfect but it works.

Alternatively you can try Oxystones, they work based upon a set range.

using wire tech to do it would be a very intresting way of it working. but do ducts equal wires?

It would be awesome if the air could drag things out with it via explosive decompression. We could launch people out of airlocks.
