Adjustable mining/placement size

As above, there should be a way to change the size of the mining/placement. These can be different tools that you research/build.

The basic system would be when you are using your mining tool or have a building block you can use a key (like ctrl or alt) to then use the arrows to adjust the size of the tool.

As I have seen in the videos there are ways to do this. You have the base tool which does 2x2:
    xx
    xx

and the fish which looked much bigger - something like 8x8:
    xxxxxxx
    xxxxxxx
    xxxxxxx
    xxxxxxx
    (doesn't come out scaled here)

So why not a tool that lets us go from a single block and we can make a line, square, rectangle shape with it to either mine/build? This would especially help in building our backgrounds. We can ctrl > arrow > and click out shapes like:
    xxxxxxxxxx
    or
    xxx
    xxx
    xxx
    or
    x

    however we choose.

Thank you for your time :)

    I've noticed the 1 x 1 size & 2 x 2 size selections available, & I would love to have a 3 X 3 size selection available too. :)

Honestly, while they would help in the long run, people would definitely grief the hell out of them.

??? I don't understand what ya mean by that, please clarify.

People will use them to destroy and ruin other people's builds and/or houses.

Ahh. I strongly suspect the possibility that it's not sensible to build anything ya would miss anywhere other than ones Homeworld in this game.

Pickaxes are planned to have a 3 x 3 grid for mining and even though a 1 x 9 or something line to build or dig would be nice, there's already clicking and dragging so unfortunately I don't think it will happen.

    We might have more interchangeable grid sizes like 1 x 1 -> 2 x 2 for the beginning tool, then perhaps upgraded versions might go up to 3 x 3, 4 x 4 or even 5 x 5. That's just a guess though.

Edit: I spaced the # x #s because they were making this faceX3

What the hell? Yeah, we should just make it impossible to break or place any block, because it's going to get griefed. Yes, griefing is a real thing, and it will happen no matter what, unless we make every block unbreakable and unplaceable, that would solve everything.

All this guy wants is a way to slightly more conveniently place and break blocks. If you're too stupid to not protect your shit, then this tool will also make it slightly more conveient to break your shit. The solution is NOT to remove or modify this feature, it's to PROTECT YOUR GODDAMN SHIT. If you're on an open server that doesn't let you protect your shit, then you're on the wrong server.

When I was a mod for a Minecraft server, whenever anyone came with complaint that they got griefed and they didn't protect their house despite the hourly warning "is your house protected?" then you get no help, no sympathy, and no recompense, because it is your own fault that you didn't protect your house. This was a fact that was a rule on the server, stated repeatedly, and that server was one of about 80% of servers that have that rule. Anti-griefing measures will exist, we already have the homeworld mechanic, and probably a few other ones in the works, too. The onus for protecting your structure falls squarely on the shoulders of the people who built the structure. anti-griefing should take less than a minute to do, and is completely impenetrable without hacks.

I have seen the griefing argument with every single idea that involves the placement or breaking of blocks and I am suck and tired of seeing ideas shot down because "they can be used to grief" unless it's an amazing digging machine that removes a billion blocks a second with no possible way to rollback a section of the world and ignores protections and boundaries, then there is no reason to worry about griefing. It's a simple thing to work around, anti-grief measures are completely foolproof, generally easy to use, already exist in the game, and give no reason to not use them.
    [/rant (for now)]

On topic: I like the idea, being able to change your grid size would be quite nice and handy. I do think that the pick shoult take longer to break blocks (in the let's plays I couldn't get a solid impression of if that happens or not.) that way even a really high-end pick could be scaled down efficiently. Perhaps low-end gear can't affect a too-large region, partially because it'd take way too long to break all those blocks, and also because it'd give a bit more incentive to upgrade your placing and breaking tools.

Whoa there, cowboy. I didn't mean to not include it because people grief. I didn't even downvote it. I apologize if I came off as rude, terse or even stupid. Yes, I do agree that people should protect their stuff, I myself have become a master of hidden bases in minecraft.

when I explode like that it's usually because i've heard this argument dozens of times, each time it makes me a bit angrier until I just kinda go nuts and rant away. You should be glad that you got my third draft. (Well, I should be more glad, seeing as I like this forum and being able to say stuff on it. . .)
Okay, i'm all depressurized for now, and I think that my brain has kinda crammed itself from being in shreds.
And, just to be clear, I wasn't yelling at you, I was yelling at the idea of that statement that my brain has kinda genericized into a lump of hatred for it.
