EDIT2: developer intervention! picture from Tiy :) http://www.reddit.com/r/starbound/comments/1gyvn5/potential_starbound_art_style_mod/capmybz

edit: the art is not native resolution. Here is a full-size screenshot. The caveat is that when art assets get rotated, the game does indeed use single pixels, effectively "anti-aliasing" the 2x2 art. This can be seen most obviously on the gun the player is holding in the screenshot.

With that said, I don't see the harm in adding these scalers as an option or mod after release. I agree it doesn't really need to be a priority of the team right now though, and they should continue making the art the way it is because it looks perfect to me

    or

    https://code.google.com/p/hqx/

This could be used if people wanted the visuals in-game to be "de-pixeled" to "enhance" the quality or to make it easier to play longer with less eye strain.

This may get people to play that may not have otherwise if an OPTION (it is only an option) for de-pixelization is added.

EDIT 3: There IS a MAJOR difference between these 2 images, the 2nd (also 2nd link) one keeps a bit of the original pixelized feel, and enhances less, but it is much more accurate.

? pixel art IS the art-style of the game! Why change it?o_O
That is like asking a hi-rez FPS to add pixelized graphic options,
    it just isn't right...
(this is just my opinion, i may of interpreted your suggestion wrong)

I don't plan on using it, but I saw some people talking about it and thought it could help the game be more appealing to others using the automated program.

I think it would be a cool thing to add to the game, because it would change the look of the game so much. I'm sure it would be cool to use both styles.

It looks great for use in emulation of legacy titles, but for a game like Starbound that will be played in much much higher (native) resolutions, and thus have FAR more detail on screen than what was possible in 8/16bit systems, I don't see this translating particularly well. I could see a fan mod pop up to implement something like this, but I don't think it'd be a valuable use of the developers' time.

I wasn't really in to the idea, but I went to the link you listed:

    Original:

    To this:
    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

You lose a ton of detail, and you can't always know how something will look after coming out of the filter.

you would sort of loose the 'feel' of the game.
It is designed to have pixel art for a reason.
Pixel art used to be always used because it was the most the program could handle; but in this day-and-age developers still use this style for a sense of nostalgia and it IS just an awesome style! Taking this away would majorly impact the game and the design/feel of the game.

You don't really "lose a ton of detail" it just smoothed the pictures. You not specifically liking the "smoothed" look isn't "all the detail is DELETED!111!!" If the detail was gone, the 1-up wouldn't have any of the white spots, only the green body, etc.

This argument isn't proper. It isn't against my idea, but for the idea that "the game has pixel art for a reason" and the reasoning is that "without pixel art it is worse" (even ignoring the circular logic explained below)

So your "logic" is: 1)It has pixel art for a reason ->because-> 2) Without pixel art it is worse ->because-> 3)It has pixel art for a reason

besides, this wouldn't even impact you in anyway, simply do not use the filter. I'm not attempting to RUIN YOUR IMMERSION BY KILLING PIXELS ONE BY ONE.

I'm giving other players that want this the ability to use it.

This will only corrupt game. In example, depixelized mario looking sad because his eyes lost shape. Pixel art is normal for this game. And more - this algorithm isn't to easy to work each frame on all (i.e. full-hd) game picture. And more - this alogirithm for images that was zoomed and have (without interpollation) big regular pixels. But in Starbound pixels just on original textures, but in-game they don't stay on grid:
But, might be one way to do what you want - game must depixelize all textures before using them in-game. But this will increase loading time, memory (RAM and GRAM) usage and may make game works slow.
It might be usable, but may have unpredictable effects like sad Mario...

I am more towards hqx than Microsoft's cartoonier look. It keeps the feel of the sprites, while making them prettier to look at. Oh, Tiy also made this: http://i.imgur.com/QPXiqiT.png

I guess the sword didn't need a fuller (blood groove), right? That paperclip smashed in there is an appropriate representation of that detail. And Bomberman's eye has always been attached to his helmet. Yeah, no. Those are details. I'm flabbergasted you picked the mushroom of all examples; eyes are a pretty big detail. Now it looks like the eyes have become shading for the gills of the 1-up's pileus or something. wkvs already pointed out Mario looks sad, and why the hell should he? Because someone wasn't happy with his pixel art?

Regardless, you can't fix that, because that would require direct manipulation of each graphical asset to make it look nice. The game adds things by "blocks" which are 8x8 (source). What you want is vectors (infinite resolution). That can only be applied after, since pixels are important for assets loading in the first place, so you can't do quality control to avoid stuff like what I linked.

Mixing pixel art and high res rotation or position REALLY bothers me, so this would be a welcome addition.

Thanks. Hope there would be a way to disable it on text, if implemented.

There's only a few very minor spots there that don't look great and those are barely noticeable :)

I just want to see this option in the game, it looks pretty good so far (besides the text)

    This is freakin' outstanding. Support!

To those saying pixels = starbound... yes, but the suggestion is an option/setting.
Nobody is forcing you to use it. :p

I think with a filter that is less aggressive it could retain a similar style and feeling without taking from the detail or mucking up text much.

These sort of filters I see a lot when emulating old NES/SNES games, so it's exciting to see this!
In fact, most of the gaming I do is retro. The filters really help enhance when they're not over-zealous, imo.

Picture semi-related (no filters), my all-time favourite!
