I can see both being useful. I would prefer Terraria's style, unless there are a bunch of repeated recipe like things that you can substitute any material in for (similar to how you can make a tool in mc with the different materials). Ofcourse it would also be great if we had something other than either of those.
Maybe you can store blueprints in your log. But that would be a lot of searching. Let's add a search bar. There should also be a hole to put stuff in, then the log will show the recipes it is used in. Some art:
How about, you have to use a "Minecraft" crafting system to "develop technology" but once you have found it you can craft it "Terraria-style". That way, with the number of items, you might skip one or two, but it doesn't matter. Larger grids could be used for better items. Then you could share "technology" with your friends.
a crafting grid is not a good idea how about even more complex with needing more materials(string, shaft, sticks, etc) also @ Kuro Hinotori, all the other RPG games out there have crafting systems
Even though I don't want a crafting grid, saying it shouldn't be put in because it's copying another game is not good reasoning.
minecraft's crafting grid won't work as well as alchemy (just shoving in all the right ingredients) because it limits you to using only 9 ingredients, and complicated items will make no sense trying to arrange stuff in a few boxes. I think starbound will have a system similar to terraria's for things you can make with your hands, but they will have some innovative method for creating complicated things in the space station labs
well here's the thing, we came to a comprise. For the simple things you have your little minecraft grid, and for advanced it would be a terraria style. happy lazy people? you don't have to remember all those pretty pictures.
well we didn't actually come up with a compromise because we aren't making the game are we? it's a compromise if the people at chucklefish were trying to decide upon the crafting system and they read this and decide to adopt it
That's not a very good solution. I think just a plain old Terraria-style system would work perfectly fine.
um, getting the materials? duh? -edit cuz I don't double post- do you like games that make simple fundamentals such as crafting or walking or breathing a hassle when they could have a 1-click system? is it really necessary to make crafting the simple items you use a lot a challenge? -edit number 2- I think you have it backwards, you make "simple" items require a tedious crafting grid and complex ones a one-click system? I usually respect opinions but that is just wrong. I'm not saying my method is correct, but it makes more sense.
I like this, being able to "discover" the item by crafting and afterwards just pick it out of a list, assuming you have the right materials. I would say a 4x4 or maybe (stressing the maybe) a 5x5 grid would work nicely. 5x5 seems too large, but depending on the items it may be necessary. Perhaps it could be an upgrade to the crafting station, also found by crafting it? Also, quests for recipes is an amazing idea.
actuality yes i find i do like games where there's a Challenge unlike...(cough terraria cough) where you can be a lazy slob and just click it. debate all you want i think that the terraria crafting sucks. can everyone take a look at what we came up with? so you can all stop being nuances like 'oh my god! no i just want the terraria crafting system , like o.m.g!'
Actually, I prefer Skulblaka's idea. That being said, I would still prefer a Terraria-style only, because it will be harder to make items on the fly.
I too like challenging games but it pisses me off when they achieve that difficulty through tediousness instead of good gameplay. -- would terraria fit your definition of challenging if you had to spend 10 seconds making a torch instead of 2?
