I know the discussion has moved on from this, but I respectfully disagree. It makes sense that native aliens would be used to adverse weather conditions like cold and acid rain. Getting hit from above by a giant rock, not so much, but that's not technically part of the natural environment.

I like the acid rain because it makes it so some planets are just too dangerous to live on and stuff :)

You can put exactly the same argument against freezing cold planets where you have to wait the day out. It's even worse, because you can't just hide from the cold below the surface, you need to stand/sleep around torches every minute or so (for a minute or so) or you'll die, that's when exploring, or just sleep the whole day with torches around.

Does it make icy planets difficult or just annoying to you?

Well, not exactly the same. on frozen planets you can walk around with a campfire, wait a few seconds near it and keep exploring without losing health at all, i do that everytime. But acid rain deals heavy damage constantly, you can't just shrug it off until about tier 6, and stimpacks are rare and expensive. sometimes they don't even protect you at all. it's way harder, but I like the way it is.
Right now the ideas i have are:

-Acid rain planets should be identifiable from afar. freezing planets have snow, poisonous planets have those green oceans, acid rain planets could have a different colored ocean. bright orange perhaps?

-Meteor planets should also be identifiable. They should have many craters, and since meteors are an early star system feature, they sould also have lava pools.

-Meteor and acid planets sould have different ways to find resources. For example, acid dissolves metals and go to the undergound, therefore, acid rain planets should have more ores concentrated on deeper layers, instead of on surface. Meteor planets should have more ores concentrated on the surface, due to the meteor hits. meteors are naturally rich on rare minerals, especially iron, so it makes sense.

-These planets sould also be concentrated on higher sectors. i hate the idea that animals are the threat on a planet, when in reality it's quite the opposite. life is rare, and the chemistry of the planet itself is the real challenge. Maybe it's native civilization could be the real challenge. it's stupid if you consider the difference between an alpha sector animal and a level 10 one.
on alpha sector they already 2-hit you like a vicious tiger, while the most dangerous mythical creature you can think of is not even a challenge to a level 10 cub. Seriously?

I'm already ranting off topic here, so i'll leave it like that.

If you're going to bring reality into this. We don't know how rare life is. But it's probably not very considering how resilient the life we've found on our own planet can be. There a good possibility there may be life on Titan(A Moon of Saturn) because current evidence suggests there is liquid water just beneath it's surface. And while it is quite rare for solar systems to develop as our own has, there are more than enough of them out there that it's a safe bet to believe life has developed there at least similar to how it has here. we are not special.

Yes, i get what you're saying. I too think we are not, and also, Starbound wouldn't be the game it has the potential to be without life sprouting everywhere, specially with other interstellar space-faring races going everywhere and "contaminating" planets with life brought with them. i just think that the most extreme places, like moons and meteors shouldn't have life, instead having hostile bases, or even derelict bases with muder bots roaming around waiting to kill anything that moves.

This could also be very true for higher level planets, with space pirates and criminals roaming around and colonizing entire planets to get the more valuable resources found on this level, but animals wouldn't be so much of a threat anymore.

This also makes me think about the fact that i've never seen anything more than a village. seriously, villages? why not giant homeworld cities where you're expected to behave as civil as possible and have means to interact with npcs and making friends... or just join a terrorist faction and murder everyone, like apex people overthrowing the miniknog. Hory shet, so many ideas, so much potential.

Keep it in game. I love little immersion factors like this. If you don't want to deal with acid rain don't build on a planet that suffers it. Perhaps they could implement a planetary scan feature on your ship to determine any atmospheric anomalies i.e. acid rain, meteor showers etc. ?

But isn't all you need to do to avoid hp damage is to go underground (also, why just wait, when you can mine valuables)? You can't just avoid overwhelming cold like that, it's persistent whether you're up or down there, unlike acid rains. (Again, another planet, no acid rains for me, so I still ain't talking from experience.)

Otherwise, I like your ideas. :)

I suppose I should clarify. What I meant was that I would like it if life had been forced underground on those planets, so there were no surface creatures, just ones that existed in caves. They would emerge during clear weather to hunt but they would take cover from rain just as you need to. Instead of developing an immunity they seek shelter like humans would.

Possibly a combination of both depending on the planet.

i actually am in the camp where even though acid rain may have no "game" to it (i.e. it's not a defeatable obstacle, there's no item to nullify it) i actually really like the realistic nature of it and it brings environments to life.

this is a game about planets. planets are hostile environments. disliking some transient aspect simply because it's a little inconvenient is a shame.

i think it's nice. the first time i encountered it i was like "huh! acid rain! yeah that makes sense!" and started digging instead. it's fun to have stuff like that =)

Okay with the meteors you can actually dodge them, and with freezing you have time to prepare and notice that you're getting colder and have time to prepare.

With acid rain it's a sudden shower of large damage per second early on, and you literally cannot walk out into it under any situation, and monsters can easily kill you while your health is being whittled down. it's nothing like being on a cold planet. There is no it's slowly killing you, no it kills a new character quite fast and can kill you in 20 seconds flat.

Or eat a Burger. It give retarded regen. 2 equals full health. It is a human recipe made out of 2 bread (4 wheat) and 1 raw alien meat. There should be equivalent foods too.
