Abusing the Matter Manipulator and the gameplay connected to it

I've very confused about how you could possibly think the character is using the matter manipulator to place blocks. If you are on a planet while your matter manipulator is in a chest back on your ship, could you explain exactly how you think you're using it to place blocks? Is it via some sort of magical incantation? Does it teleport to you when mentally summoned? What's the explanation for how an item miles and miles away from your character is placing blocks?

The incredibly simple and logical explanation is that the graphic of you pulling out the matter manipulator when you place blocks is inaccurate. The game may be changed at some point to force you to have (and therefore actually use) a matter manipulator to place blocks, but currently that is very clearly not the case.

The only thing I would change is it's ability to place things through walls. Too often I'll run along the surface of a planet and just hold down the torch button as far down as the MM will reach, placing torches in all the caves near the surface.

Someone suggested having the blocks be unstable for 1-2 seconds when placing them. Any contact with an unstable structure would cause it to collapse. I think this is an EXCELLENT solution. It doesn't restrict base building in any way and it prevents abuse.

In Terraria and Minecraft you can negate entire attacks almost completely by building certain arenas, if that's not cheese I don't know what is.

I don't understand why everyone is raging so hard at walling in tactics. this state of the game it's quite unbalanced and it gets quite boring really when at any moment you can be one shot while wearing the best gear in the game. the bosses atm do break blocks anyway and the dragon even hits you through them. my friends and I have made it through the game without these techniques I don't see a reason to change block placement just because a few people think it's cheese.

I totally agree with the unstable solution, you can prepare a battle arena for a boss, but you cant trap a boss or a creature just while fighting. Also, some creatures with the ability of breaking blocks will be nice. :)

the ai on creatures atm is so simple all you have to do is be a few blocks away and they stop chasing or being slightly above them and they just continue to move forward into walls there is no need to block them in they do it themselves.

Since when does it? All I'm saying is that letting bosses be exploited easily to the extent of Terraria and Minecraft would be an amateurish mistake. If people get stuck, so what? It's not like that never happens in games, and if people have to completely break a fight to continue with the game then there's probably some rebalancing that needs to be done.

Well according to actual gameplay, I can leave my mana manipulator on my ship but still be able to use it to place blocks while on the planet then? Either it's a special case in the code of the game or the wiki is wrong, but it can be either one I guess. The wiki could also be referring to it to simplify the matter instead of saying "Your mouse pointer places blocks"

I don't see how it's that much harder to use a gun and not use blocks for the boss or other monsters. Also, people like efficiency and figuring out how to do things quicker. Yeah, you can bring a sword and try to melee the boss to death, but that's your own preference and maybe you want to challenge yourself. There are multiple ways to do it, and you can make it as difficult as you want it to be. I could purposely go fight the boss with 1 health remaining to make it challenging because I know it can be done, does that mean doing it with full health would be cheesy?

Also everyone's file is going to be wiped, are you going to take the "hard" way all over again? Well goodluck, but I wont waste my time being stupid when there are so many other things to do in the game. Taking the easier way isn't bad, and you don't have to participate in it. Not to mention it's a goddamn beta.

IMO, there's no need to wait, for a few reasons:

    1) the price is currently the lowest it will probably ever be. If it follows the pattern of other games, once it comes out of early development stages, the price will increase to match. So you might as well buy it now, while it's cheap ($15 USD)

    2) It's fun, even as-is

    3) Even after release, it will still be constantly changing and experiencing additional growth and new content. So "waiting to play it when it's finished" means you will never actually play it.

I think that adding a deploy timer to placing blocks would ruin the creative aspect for most people. It would make that aspect of the game undesirable to most people as it would take forever to build stuff. I suppose you can tie it into combat, but that would also be very annoying as I've had several flying enemies fly near me while I'm building only to attack once and then fly away.

That I can actually see being possible. When I summoned the first boss, I made the mistake of fighting it on top of my house and not building the best gear I could. By the time the fight was over, I had lost and my house was demolished. My second attempt I actually made an iron block arena with little safe havens that I could jump into to heal up with bandages. Even then I wasn't entirely safe as the boss would damage the arena trying to get to me. And given that it takes a long time for the damage on harder blocks to disappear, I had to keep moving around the arena to make sure that the safe havens stayed intact. Those are the kind of battles that I want to have in this type of game. If you have a problem completing a task, build something to make the task easier.

Although I think the real problem though is that that non-boss type monsters are uninteresting and easily exploited by trapping them in a dirt prison. That could easily be fixed by making it so that melee attacks can't pass through blocks and by giving the monsters attacks that can destroy blocks.

This would also severely limit people's creativity in this game. The only example you need to look at is Kerbal Space Program (KSP). In that game, part of the fun is building something and making it structurally sound. But because of the calculations that your computer has to do to determine if something will fail, there is a limit to how many parts you can use before the game starts slowing down. People who want to build massive cities or other large creations would be limited by the processing power of their computer. And server play would be almost impossible because of the same reasons, only multiplied by multiple users.
