Abusing the Matter Manipulator and the gameplay connected to it

Well currently as it stands, blocking things in is the only real way to progress. As in the later stages its a one or two hit kill.
Thankfully with the incoming balance change this will be sorted out.

In 7 days to die, and fps zombie game they have it like that. I remember building a big house and when I was placing the ceiling it caved in on me because it had no supports to hold it up. I had to place a pillar in the middle for the support so it's definitely doable, and I'd recommend it really. Would also give a reason to build those wooden beams in this game and not just be aesthetic :)

A system like that would massively increases system requirements and would severely limit the number of players you could have in multiplayer if every block was being checked for support strength

You know, people have different styles of playing. If you don't like a way people do things, again, you can do it your own way.
The mana manipulator is NOT used for placing blocks. Remove your mana manipulator from your inventory and see that you can still place blocks but you get a mana manipulator visual effect. But it's JUST A VISUAL.

And shit people, if someone's playstyle is to make pillars or block off enemies, then what do you all moan about? Do you want the game to change because you want to control others' playstyle? You play it your way, I'll play it mine, there's no reason that the game shouldn't be fully free to have many ways to do things, that's what makes it awesome. If you don't like it, don't do it, or screw off trying to tell the creators to change something you don't want to do but others want in the game.

Not necessarily. You don't have to check every block. It'd be no worse than sand currently, just applied to construction blocks they either have something below them or they don't. Maybe have it
check every X block even so you don't need every single block supported (which would be unfeasible in a regular home)

I personally don't see why mobs shouldn't be allowed to break blocks. Not instantly, but over time.. A little like the zombies in Terraria. It's only one solution to this 'abuse' of the matter manipulator that people are talking about, players wouldn't be so quick to wall themselves or mobs in, and would give them reason to defend the structures they spent so long building.

All I know is its fun to use the MM to see whats in the dirt.

Adding a scanning visor like Super metroids xray would be AMAZING for this game. Far more fun then "spelunkers potions"
Other options would be an ultrasound device that sends out pulses, that show ore.

Takes brains to get stuck on a boss and look for cheese kill methods on the internet, doesn't it?

There's a difference between "multiple valid playstyles" and "easy way and hard way". It's subtle, but you should notice it.

Oh let people find clever little ways to abuse the game. It's fun, let people have fun.

Cheese kill? The way I understand a boss arena is a way to make bosses easier to manage, not just kill them for you.

It's strange how people here seem to be so hellbent on dictating exactly how people should play the game, even in singleplayer

Well I always thought Terraria did it right, making the bosses pass through blocks.

Even though this game is not even competitive in its nature, people by their nature have to compete. They would rather have a feature disabled for everyone than their just choosing not to use it and play the game their own way.

Can you cite what you're basing that on? Practically speaking, it should absolutely not be the case. There is no reason in general for most blocks to be checked "all the time", or even ever. You would only need to check a block when it is being placed, or when the state of nearby blocks change. The overall process ought to be quite easy to optimise for low performance hits, based on my experience.

Hmmmm nah, building an arena in such a way that you can completely ignore the boss mechanics while still being able to damage it feels a lot like "killing them for you".

If you single player character CANNOT be transported to multiplayer in any way shape or form then this is fine. If you are able to interact with other player characters then yes, it does have an impact on the other person's playstyle.

Yeah, generally the level is broken down into a bunch of boxes (octree, BSP, quadtree etc) - and boxes only need to check against adjacent boxes. So when X changes X+1 and X-1 rechecks themself - if the state changes X+2 will check as well and so on. Fairly basic mechanic and generally only a big performance hit if X gets out of control.

Stop being pedantic. The matter manipulator is the tool used to place objects whether or not you have to select it or have it in your inventory when placing objects. If instead the visual was you using your hands to place objects, would you argue that the hands are not actually the method of placement because there is no hand object that must be equipped or carried in your inventory?

That and I imagine that being fixed so if you only have your hands available, the range would be similar to that of a pixaxe.
