I vote for this or optional. It does kinda take away from the mystery of a new planet.

eh, I've actually changed my mind. I don't even like the black skulls as an optional feature. I just don't think its necessary in anyway whatsoever. It's kind of like treating us like idiots (I know they didn't mean that obviously) and we really should be forced to learn about hazards on our own. I don't really like the way modern games seem to be holding our hand so much, and I'd really like it if we stepped away from that.

Even when we were kids and we played Pokemon and Zelda or even Mario, we could identify for ourselves what is harmful for the most part, and if we didn't, then we learned.

TL;DR: We're smart enough to figure out what's bad and what's not bad without huge signs in our faces saying "THIS WILL HURT YOU"

Well I simply put all those other options there to let the devs know why we like or don't like these black skulls. Y'know, to give the devs a reason to keep or remove them, not to just go "Okay they don't like them........ soooo should we just remove them or what?"
Will take that advice in mind next time though, thanks :)

it's no problem, I didn't really mean to come off as aggressive, that's just how I am. I like to act like a snarky jerk because lets be honest its pretty fun

    maybe its a poison effect...

    It's a Status affect.. Poison..

The creatures only had it cause they touched the plants.
Thus, getting the poison status affect.. I didn't see them with the effect before touching the plant. Only after.

    Seemed kind of obvious here..

I didn't find your comment aggressive, I took it as a critique :D

Hmm... If that's true, I wonder why damage numbers weren't popping out of the monsters after touching the plants... It does make sense though.

ah. that would make sense. Then im fine with it. I mean. walking along and getting killed by a plant because I had no clue it was poisonous would be annoying. so thats fair nuth

That's the only thing making me think it isn't a poison status effect - they didn't appear to be taking damage.

Hostiles don't always have the marks above them, if you look in the vids you see that the skulls only appear over monsters that are currently in combat against a player. At least that's what I gathered from it. Jumping to conclusions will get us nowhere, but I don't really like them too much, makes everything too easy

since it seems like not all creatures hostile to the player emit the skulls, not to mention non-agressive plants, isn't it possible that the skulls are indicative of something being poisonous?

Could be a slow poison. Considering he killed them rather fast.
Or the particle affect of poison is only in-game so far and not the damage factor.

It is kind of hard to tell I guess.
But I don't really think its some "Hostile" affect for creatures. That'd just be to silly.

Regardless, the player should need to find out for him/herself (the hard way, perhaps) that a certain plant is poisonous.

Maybe this is just a noobie mode feature? Assuming noobie is the very, very easy mode then this might not be so bad.

I'm comfortable with finding out things because a monster blunders into it. I am not the Main Character of the Universe - I'm just a guy, here to blow stuff up and take their samples.

It doesn't bother me, I would like to know what's about to kill me since I like a more laid back experience and only fight when I think I need to.

Oh, I thought the floating skulls meant a thing was either poisoned or poisonous. If it just means, "This is dangerous." it's not really needed. There are plenty of ways to figure that out without it wafting danger icons at you.
