DNA mixing is a great suggestion that should definitely be added to Starbound. It seems daunting to have to create an option for every possible combination of DNA mixing. The answer is simple: Bodygroups. This allows certain pieces of a model to be on or off, so it overwrites certain traits. Here is the basic idea http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Bodygroup So, let's say there is a mutation that overwrites the legs and feet, a spider-like mutation. The animal now has the spider leg and feet Bodygroups on instead of the default ones. Then, you mix penguin DNA in there, which gives it penguin feet. The spider foot Bodygroup is turned off and replaced by the penguin flipper Bodygroup. The idea is, you don't have to manually sprite every single possible combination, you just make all the mutations once, then apply Bodygroups to creatures to make it so the Bodygroups are replaced. I hope this helps the Devs with taking on such an ambitious feature. I really hope that this gets added to Starbound, and I was just providing a suggestion as to how it should be implemented. ~LazerEagle1
Agreed ,Should simplify bodytypes. Animal, Insectoid, Alien, Aquatic, etc. Just dont make TO many types. Just have a few appearance altering DNA and the rest can be simply stat or ability modifying. It will be much easier for Developers to implement, I think we can all agree they are working hard enough as it is they dont need to add the feet of every animal both real and fictional to replace players feet, though im positive they could if they wanted.
Actually they can simply do it as the rest of the things, randomly generated. For every body type, give it a shape, and then some randomized color patterns that could fit with the body type (red spiders, green spiders, black spiders...), and tada! You've got yourself a nice and complete set of modifications!
