Greetings everyone. Currently in Starbound the only way to get construction materials (i.e bricks or carved wood) is to grief structures from dungeons, villages or random encounters. This is boring and unpractical since you are limited by the quantity of blocks present in said structures, the time you spend mining them, and the luck required to find one (also, it's just a detail but you're demolishing people's houses). So I propose to add a crafting recipe for every artificial building block in the game. As there are many of them, it would probably be better if there is a special station for blocks - say, a "carving table". That way, it won't flood the crafting table's interface. The idea here is that since blocks of solid stone/wood usually are not high-tech objects, it will be possible to craft them with very few resources. For instance, all that would be necessary to get concrete would be sand and water. In other words, the carving table would turn common natural blocks into various decorative blocks. That would also bring a use to the hundreds of tons of dirt and stone you collect while mining, so, well, two birds with one stone. Also, I assume most of you will agree these recipes don't need pixels. In a way, pixels are the equivalent of experience points, making sure you are advanced enough in the game to make a certain tool. I understand they are useful in pixel printing and crafting the most technical blocks (steel and such) but the point here is making basic blocks easier to get in large quantities. The bare resources are enough. If artificial blocks become cheap and quick to produce, then players will be able to focus in the creative aspect of the game and build beautiful houses and monuments without having to explore the universe for weeks first. Of course, all blocks don't have to be available from scratch - finding bleprints of rare, finely carved blocks in villages would be cool too - but it would still be better than the raw cobblestone and wooden planks from tier one. And like I said earlier, it will be a relief for all the NPCs hiding out there in fear that a space-jerk removes their whole house during the night!
make a mod for it I'm pretty sure it isn't that hard to make something like this. the only problem i could see is the hud needs to be coded in lua i think (which i'v never really looked into) but just adding a pixel value to the blocks should make them craftable at the pixel printer thing i think.
I agree, and I'm certain this will be added eventually as it makes a lot of sense to be able to craft these items too as the NPCs did it themselves xD
Maybe you should be able to put construction materials in the pixel printer for a quite high price (about 500 for each material) and then being able to print a lot of 'em for a cheap price (so that there will cost quite a bit to unlock them and then you would be able to build a house out of them quite easily).
This. Or simply print them like decorations. I feel bad about having to destroy buildings from my own race just to build my castle. This simply isn't right...
The only problem I see with that would probably be the pixel printing formula as they would need to make a specific formula (I don't think those are that hard to make... But then again I'm pretty ill-informed in that regard) just to make them not cost a ton of pixels for 1 block. Then again if you paid for a big quantity of blocks it would be fine. I do see the carving table thing more viable because of the branching system they got planned.
Yes this would be a must have feature of the game. Actually that is what i had exactly in my mind as well. There could be a simple crafting station specialized in crafting blocks. If you would want to learn to craft those specific blocks you have to go and find then collect their bluprints just like you would do with the biome related objects. It simply should be this way because it would force builder like players to explore and go on an adventure and have a little different challange in exploring planets and environments other than figuring out what to build. The only stumble would be figuring out what materials would specific blocks require to craft. It certainly should not require pixels like the 3D printing with the ship which i find actually kind of ok with objects but i wish they could be cheaper sometimes. Crafting these blocks could be done with the combinations of other common blocks like dirt cobblestone dry dirt and materials like copper steel iron. For example the light metal from the Ape's dungeouns could be crafted by combining steel and iron or something like that at this crafting station. While we are at topic i would also point out that it's rather annoyes me that you can't get sand and make glass at your spawn planet. You can build a temporary home or little settlement but you can't put windows on it because there isn't a tiny grain of sand on that god damn planet so you would have to go through finding core fragments first to get to a desert planet where you could get sand and glass from ?! OUTRAGEOUS ! WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SAND ON OUR FIRST PLANET !!!!!!!!
Yes, but they really, really, really need to make a crafting table dedicated to only these types of blocks and furniture I am sick of having to scroll past all the hundreds of furniture items I have collected in order to find one recipe...
I just got back to the game after many months and wanted to make a thread, but it already exists! Huzzah! I too would love the ability to create more blocks. -Right now I can make several tech-themed blocks and random others with my robotic crafting table for 50 pixels each or some materials, but I'd definitely want more. -A real slowdown to my gameplay has been farming and stockpiling all the types of blocks I can find. I'd rather pay 50,000 pixels for a stack of blocks when I need them rather than store hundreds of stacks of blocks in case I'll need them (and possibly find I don't have enough anyhow). It should also save me the struggle of continually sorting incomplete stacks of blocks that vary fractionally by hue, and help cut down on inventory clutter. -I'd REALLY like to stop gathering and storing Sewage blocks as if they were some rare nonrenewable resource. My ship is starting to smell. FLORAN HAS ENOUGH DIRT, MAKE IT STOP
I'm happy to see so many of you want this too! I really hope this is going to be added in the vanilla game, but until that, I fully support your mod.
I would like the carving table to be sort of like the cooking table-crafting a certain type of block might unlock one or two new recipes, then those ones could unlock more, etc. For example, you could craft stone bricks, and unlock large stone bricks and the heavy stone bricks that you find in glitch castles. Crafting concrete could unlock reinforced concrete(which would require concrete and iron or some other resource.) While we're at it, I find it somewhat strange that there are 10, give or take, cobblestone types, but when you harvest them they're all the same. I would like it if mining a certain stone gave that specific kind of stone so you could place it somewhere else, instead of turning into generic cobblestone. Either that, or allow the crafting of generic cobblestone into the other stone types somehow, possibly with a high-tech matter transformer or something.
Agreed. Why can't we make thatch out of plant fibres? Why can't we compress all that plant matter stone into plantblocks? +Support
Yeah. This a reasonable suggestion indeed. So many glitch castles would have gone untouched if this had been implemented earlier. Shouldn't be impossible to code either. Great suggestion!
