A very easy way to prevent 90-99% of griefing.

I just spent an hour repairing damage done to my ship and its massive amount of items in 20+ storage containers after a friend accidentally griefed me, by running around like a hyperactive idiot, swinging around a weapon he didn't know would generate explosion effects that destroyed everything in my ship, spilling out the thousands and thousands of items I had stored.

This took an hour because, right when I was almost finished, a 2nd, separate friend came in and did the exact. Same. Thing.

Oh, and I lost the only NPC I've ever had in my ship due to this incident, too. He sold me items I couldn't otherwise obtain.

    Here are two ideas.

1: Disallow other players from modifying your ship. Optionally, have a toggleable permission to allow them to modify it. HOWEVER, have it set to DISALLOW by default.
2: Disallow other players from using weapons inside your ship. Optionally, have a toggleable permission to allow them to use weapons. HOWEVER, have it set to DISALLOW by default.

I learn from my mistakes. Unfortunately, the only control I have over this is to never party with anyone in multiplayer again until this is fixed. But that's a small price to pay, to avoid being griefed by people with bad intentions and well-intentioned idiots.

    Edit: This just got worse.

I invited a friend to come play with me for the first time on a server with about 7 other friends. Within 5 minutes, people were reporting missing items, and that my friend was going through their chests.

Long story short, a lot of things went missing from my other friend's ships, such as their ores, bars, diamonds, etc. The friend I invited denies stealing anything, (Despite a large amount of evidence against him), but this is just another example of why we need this. We can't control that some people will be douchebags who prey on other human beings, but we should at least be able to restrict them from doing so, by not allowing them the opportunities to do these things. We need the option to 1: restrict players from joining our ships, 2: opening containers on them, 3: destroying containers on them and 4: hurting NPCs on them.

in terraria, a chest with stuff in it, cannot be dug up with a pickaxe. they could fix this by doing the same thing, prevent a chest from being destroyed if there is stuff in it

+1 i was about to post this but thanks for getting there before me, i one shotted my npc's by accident while looking in chests also griefing is annoying it makes people think twice before joining multiplayer, there needs to be rules and restrictions when you are in a ship. such as allow friends only to open chests or break items or even harm npc's.

I agree to this as well, would be nice for weapons or well things in general to have a toggle off so i can walk around 'empty' handed and not have to worry about hurting npcs on my ship by mistake

We really just need locks or something. I mean hey everyone has that friend or two that are dicks and like to go through your stuff. Also people just putting random items down in your nice, organized ship while you're out sucks. Its your ship and honestly whats the point of letting anyone else mess with it? I mean dude they have their very own ships, yours should be totally personalised and locked up. Whats the point of that nice lockbox they give you in the ship if anyone if your party can get into it lol.

Edit: Also about the npc's, I've never even had one yet lol but i can really just imagine that being a pain. They should just turn off friendly fire on npc's

Yeah ships should have options to make it more private like only friends can enter or nobody can enter. Also it's annoying when i one shot npcs by accident, especially t he ones i spawn in my ship, they're expensive to spawn the spawner takes steel bars and pixels. Friendly fire toggle is needed badlly.

yeah...i just accidentally, killed an npc swinging a weapon near her, killed her in 1 hit. and then i also accidentally broke 6 boxes on my ship with stuff in them...it wasn't "thousands of items" but it was still annoying

    Lol, nice friends you have.
But seriously, multiplayer calls for ability to lock items in place, or else 2-3 idiots/griefers would ruin whole playerbuilt cities in minutes.
Something like forcefield beacon placed in fortificated underground room, that allows the creation of individual pockets of buildability set by moderator / planet owner.

I Think this is a great idea on multi player I'm reluctant to join peoples partys as I don't want my ship to be greifed I really hope this gets added. also the NPC thing is a pain i accidentally killed my friends Merchant they really should have a toggle

Is bumping threads allowed? This is a relatively quick, easy fix which the game desperately needs. After that debacle, friends on that server have been extremely wary of partying with one another, and I don't blame them one bit; I feel exactly the same way.

I was really surprised that i was actually able to look in my friends locker, and put/take stuff from it. As for NPC's, there is really no reason why weapons should hit them in the first place. Maybe if you want to dismiss a NPC that you yourself have invited there, he would show a dialog option to tell him to leave.

I couldn't agree more. An option for only the owner of an NPC to dismiss them, rather than everyone being able to kill them - accidentally or otherwise - seems much more sane.

... Could this maybe be included in the next update, or the one after that?

Kind of a critical flaw that can drastically ruin peoples' multiplayer experiences.

Also could add an option of shared chests with privacy setting allowed for selected players.

I'd like a deep permissions system to toggle specific actions, for specific players, for specific containers.
If I want my ship completely isolated, so be it. If I want just my party or 1-5 specific players to beam there, I'd set that.
When I have just one container to share items through, I'd give it public access.
This can be smoothly set up through an expanding menu from the window of a container, ship storage and perhaps a global option in the pixel printer's selection.

Really, any of these ideas would be better than what's in place now. There's literally no incentive to play multiplayer at all, because there's not much you can do to interact with others without joining a party with them, and then if you do, there's a chance they'll come and destroy/steal everything on your ship.

I mean, it's not like this is just a problem with higher level characters. My Floran who doesn't even have full copper armor just had her whole ship destroyed from someone who just happened to be in the party she was invited to. If it wasn't for the fact that characters are getting wiped in the next couple of days, I'd be extremely ticked off at this.
